If I bought a Cat and removed the innards....

...would it make a mess?:)

If I bought a used cat and removed the ceramic baffles, would this improve performance to the same extent as a decat?
I have heard that some jap motors actually benefit from the swirling effect but in theory it doesn't sound right.

just put a decat on, cheaper, less hassle and no chance of inhaling all the toxic crap in the cat when you are smashing it up.

MOT time is a reet pain though.

go the hole hog and get a 100cell sportscat 95% the flow of a decat but you will pass your MOT, only thing is they cost about £300+

lol we had a probe in work that the cat was blocked on, if you revved it and looked under thr car, just before the cat, the exhaust would glow bright red. anyway "decatted" it with an air chissel n crowbar, job done

Who sells a 100cpsi sports cat? I can only find 200cpsi items (Janspeed) for the 172, or the bigger universal ones.

I don't mind changing back come MOT time, it's only 4 bolts. I thought this may be an option as I can get a Cat for less than £30 but if it will not help performance, I won't bother.

"only 4 bolts" fair comment on a 182 but have you seen where the flange on the cat that meets the f*nnymould is? its a fiddly ass job even with a ramp and a mate helping.

To be fair I haven't looked but, as the old saying goes, 'No pain, no gain', literally.

Is it worth it for £30 or shall I just have a straight through pipe made up?

The likes of Janspeed will go on at length about how their decat pipes are gas-flowed etc etc. Making a decat by ripping the cuts out of a cat doesn't sound good for air flow.

Got to admit I'd heard the swapover was a PITA on a 172.

I enjoy a challenge. I'm not sure wether to go for it. £30 is probably half what a decat would cost me but I know what you mean about flow. I'll see if Fred has done it.

it'll work, BUT it might sound a bit weird due to the shape of the box (resonating)
its a c**t to change on a 172
