Improving torque

  Mk4 .:R32
I bought a 172 about 3 months ago, and I'm just after some advice on improving the torque. The mid range torque is pretty rubbish tbh (between 2k-5k revs). Am I right in saying 172's have 145lbs of torque as standard? Will a decat, BMC CDA (with cold air feed) and a remap make much difference??

cheers

Would make much difference though? Does it change the rev limiter as well? So you can go faster in each gear before it red lines

decat would be the greatest benifit followed by ik etc. a 182 exhaust manifold would help midrange torque further but wouldn't be cheap... then a remap. 145lbft is probably about standard

Wouldn't go to expense/hastle of 182 manifold but at a minimum would go decat, cat-back, panel filter with improved cold feed to airbox + remap
Possibly matched inlets too

The decat + cat-back will also save approx 6-7kg weight

I've already fitted a BMC CDA with hillpower inlet. But not sorted the cold air feed yet, cos theres hardly any space to route it (literally theres about a 2 inch gap down to the front grill, and I need a pipe that is 85mm in diameter to fit onto the BMC CDA). Checked on k-tec before and a manifold + sports cat upgrade including fitting would be over £1000. Which is not worth it for something that won't make a hell of a difference. I'd rather keep it almost standard, and save for a faster car now!!

it might not have a lot of torque but if you keep it in the power range you shouldn't have a problem. why would you be between 2k and 5k revs anyway if you want to go quick? maybe you need a diesel?

Well unless I red line in every gear all the time then I have to go through the rev range. My point is that say for example your in third gear at 2500 revs and you floor it, there's not much acceleration until 5k revs. I was just looking to improve the acceleration pre-5k revs.

went i got my 172 i was alittle bit disapointed with the low end tq. But means good MPG when you need it tho! just drive rev happy and its fun fun.

Near 150 torque from a N/A 2.0 is good going imo, im sure its more than on Hondas last gen S2000 and new CTR
Anyone name a N/A 2.0 with more than 150 ? Im curious

^ looks like new S2000 has 162 @ 6800rpm

you need to remove the accoustic valve to get down there. tight, but you can do it.

if u want that kinda thing ur better off with a cooper s (supercharged version) the pick up is instant and can be made even better

Problem with these kind of cars is that they drink petrol as their always on, unlike hot hondas and 182's etc

would love to supercharge a 182 has anyone done it?

Cams, inlet and remap will bring you really close to 185lb/ft and seriously pulls if you get the job spot on, and you can bump it up even further with port work.

Doesn't that cost about £1600 or thereabouts? Its a possibility though if it really is worth it!!

Ant, I don't mean to sound like a muffin, but wheres the acoustic valve?(I'm quite new to all the mechanical malarky on cars)

remove the n's'f wheel and arch liner and you'll see it nr the horn.

loads of threads on how to remove it if you do a search :)
