iPhone 5 vs 5C

Could anyone highlight any differences between the two?

I smashed my 5 in a car door today, it's buggered, I'm anticipating the offer of a 5C from our insurance and I wanted to know if there are any negatives over my old 5.

I know its plastic over metal but I don't mind that, any other differences?

Weight.

I wanted a 5 but couldn't be arsed getting one off ebay so went with a new 5c.

You'll be disappointed with the weight. For me a case is a must and it just ruins the experience.

It's a good feeling phone without a case and you kind of forget it's heavy mainly because it's really slippy...
but with a case it has a chunky feeling compared to my girlfriends 5

Rear camera on the 5c seems to be slightly better, and the front facing camera is miles better with the 5c.

Practically the same as far as I'm aware. If I had the choice now I'd have a C, no question - it looks great, and it just feels superb in your hand.

Alas, I've got a 5 and my contract doesn't run out for another year..

The insurance are calling me in the morning to sort it out, it's new for old so the only options are 5C or 5S unless they can dig up some old 5 stock from somewhere. I'm hoping for a 5S, as thats technically the class of phone I had before but judging by the replies I guess a 5C would do.

Anyway, here's what happens when you crush the door of a 1970s car on a modern phone, not pretty :(

If the iPhone5 was the top of the line when you bought it, you should be asking for the latest now which is the 5S.

I've got a 5C in white and its sound. I did have a 4S though so I noticed speed upgrade etc.

Why should you get a phone with a better spec to replace the one you lost?

In car terms, that would be like claiming for the loss of a Focus ST and demanding instead a newly released Focus RS as that is now top of the range. Yeah right, you think insurance works that way?

It exists to put you into the position (or as close to it as possible) that you were in before you suffered the loss, and the 5C is, as far as I'm aware, a better match for the spec of the 5 than the 5S is hence why it's offered.

Well that depends on a number of factors. If you had a line of accessories specific to the 5 (car holder, cases) then i'd want either a 5 or 5s

The 5C is a technically better spec, but its form factor would annoy me as i'd need to replace some of my accessories.

The car insurance thing comparison is a bit irrelevant, but if a car was face lifted and no stock remained of the old car then you'd get the facelift (Assuming you had a like for like policy; which is rare - you'd get market value most of the time)

Well, unless you could insure the hassle factor of a non-like-for-like replacement...you're stuck!

Until such a policy is offered (maybe there's an opening here for Apple?) it's the hardware only you are insuring and a 5C is close enough to a 5 for the insurance companies to effectively say "bothered?".

Well look at it this way

iPhone 5 Sim free price (16GB) was £529
iPhone 5S sim free price (16GB) is £549

5C is £469

Just got off the phone.

I have to send it back tomorrow to see if it can be repaired, and if not they'll ring me Monday to discuss the settlement which is apparently the cost of a replacement based on the prices on Apple's website. I'm pretty confident it's beyond economical repair so might buy one today, I'm tempted to go for a used 5 and pocket the difference towards whatever comes out next as I really don't see the S as worth the extra money.

Why aren't they just replacing the phone? I didn't know they did a settlement figure. I'd haggle for the 5s figure, claim you need a metal bodied phone as you work in an industrial environment, and a 5c would last minutes, hence you buying a metal bodied iphone in the first place. May get you somwehere based upon needing to be able to purchase a like for like.

It's not normal phone insurance, it's through the house as an add on, I'm happy with a settlement.

Seen some deals:

new 5s £90 + £29.99 x 24 for the equivalent contract as I'm on. So thats a total of £810

Or, keep current contract at £18, which is £432 for 24 month, plus equivalent 5C at £469 is £901 total.

A used 5 is £270ish, so it would be £700 down that route

So might aswell order a new 5S, I'll pay the extra for the 32GB too.

Mike, I'd definitely go with a used handset to 'do' until the 6 comes, as it's inevitable it'll be announced in Sept.

I used to work for an insurance company.

Its based on value and the policy type.

If a like for like policy is purchased then the following applies depending on t&c's.

If I buy an insurance policy to cover my £600 phone and in a years time I break it. I expect them to replace my phone for the one I originally purchased (like for like) if not available, I want to get the next best thing for the VALUE of the item I took out my policy for.

In this instance if the insurance was for a iPhone 5 16GB, it got damaged and was no longer for sale by the manufacturer, I'd expect the equivelant model (highest available as long as equal to or less than the device purchased which has the insurance attached to it. In this instance a 5s.

A 5c would be the insurance company trying to save money. I'd do it if I had a company, for every 100 people that are happy, 5 might not. Good savings.
