Is buying a Cup wise (the sequel)

Thanks to all who took the time to reply to my original thread. Reassuring comments and some good reports (for a change) have made me feel a whole lot better.

Ive been on a bit of a roller-coaster ride...........one day Im convinced its a great move, the next Im worried about being disappointed with a normally aspirated car (got a VAG turbo at the mo). I was smitten with the thing when I first drove it..........the dealer was rather generous with the demo and I covered about 30 miles of varying roads doing my best Colin McRae impression...........it just inspired confidence (in the dry atleast). Problem Ive had is that I drove so many cars before taking the plunge that I wasnt totally sure what driving experience I wanted (fwd, rwd, 4wd). In the end, I came back to the Clio (after looking at the mkII 172 several months ago) largely because I prefer small pocket-rocket type cars and my first "warm-hatch" was a 1995 Clio RSi...............and that was probably the best car Ive ever had.

Fingers crossed...............last I heard it was due at the dealer on the 17th.

Once again, thanks to all.

Scooby Stu,

Ive had mine for 9 months today. Its been the most entertaining 9 months of driving ever. You will not be dissappointed.

I love it.

You say you have a VAG turbo at the mo...... a golf? if it is and its the 150BHP, you wont be dissapointed with the cup. Yes, turbo power delivery is different, but the cup is so much more a chuckable / better handling car, And its much faster to a ton - about 5 secs from standing!!! Ive driven my mates one a few times and it feels lardy / lethargic and poo compared to the CUP.

At the end of the day if youre anything like me; a driving enthusiast who turns the stereo off (so as not to miss the roar of the engine and induction noise) , and drive concentrating on nothing else but driving cos I love it!!, then you will love the Cup. Simple. If quality, toys, and more gentle cruising are your bag, then its not really for you. IMO.

Listen mate, Ive had plenty of teething troubles with my Cup- but they have been just that- teething troubles. My local dealer has been brilliant, and they didnt even supply the car. It is the fastest & most economical car for its money bar none- handles fun too.

Ok there are loads of folk who have had probs- but u know the score- have problem, tell 30 folk, have great experience, tell only 5- its sad but true.

Id recommend one to anyone.

Is buying a cup wise? NO! Buying a Saab or a nice little 1.1 saxo is wise!

Choose life, choose 172!

nah.....the missus has the Golf 20VT. I agree, it is lethargic, so its having the Jabbasport treatment in the new year.

Im running a 2001 Ibiza 20VT with a little over 200 BHP following a trip to aforementioned JabbaSport. Ibiza handling doesnt come close to the Cup from what I remember of the test drive, but the 20VT lump is fantastic........its got loads of grunt and added to that the Seats not that heavy compared to the Golf, so it goes like stink............overtaking ability is stunning. I just hope I dont miss these characteristics when I get the Cup.

Quality and toys.........leave that to those in the 40plus club...........I want a balls-out, track-bred machine...............noise and rattles just add to the experience IMO.

Following on from last post:

Quoted from Mike Rutherford of Auto Express: VOLKSWAGEN is in grave danger of losing the plot. The legendary brand used to symbolise great build quality, durability and reliability. But a newly-published motor industry study of 800,000 cars suggests that, temporarily at least, the wheels are falling off at VW.

Ive suspected for months that its cars arent built like they used to be. I get regular complaints from readers, radio listeners and friends about recently purchased Volkswagens which leave them stranded alarmingly often. Now the massive and highly respected FN50 Reliability Survey has confirmed my fears. According to cold data supplied by experts in the car rental, contract hire and leasing business, the quality of the VW product appears to be in decline.

Exactly one year ago Volkswagen was ranked number one in the highly competitive FN50 league of the most reliable manufacturers in the world. Now the company has not only lost its leader status but has been booted out of the top 10 altogether. And it gets worse. This time last year the VW Golf jointly held the number one position in the most reliable cars table. Again, 12 months on, the iconic family hatchback has kissed goodbye to a top 10 place.

Sister company Audi isnt off the hook either. It was third most reliable manufacturer in 2002 but slumped to ninth place this year, behind the likes of Ford and way behind rival German firms Mercedes and BMW. And after the Audi A4 was joint winner of the most reliable car prize in 2002, this year it isnt even in the top 10. The VW Passat has also suffered in the latest FN50 survey. Exactly why VW and, to a lesser extent Audi, are in this mess is not entirely clear.

Some petrol-engined VW Group products did have problems with ignition coils in recent months and the corporation did, to its credit, embark on a massive and expensive recall campaign. But since diesel cars feature so heavily in the rental, contract hire and leasing business its hard to imagine that the ignition coil faults are the sole reason for the decline.

Matters are made worse by the fact that there is much shoulder-shrugging but precious little explanation coming from the companies when their cars fail to live up to expectations. One theory is that the VW Group put so much time, effort and money into fast-improving daughter companies such as Skoda and Seat that it took its eye off the ball as far as Volkswagen and Audi are concerned.
