Is there a legal limit on exhaust noise

About to fit my Devil unsilenced centre-section and un-homologated back-box, but I got worried when I saw that the centre-section has a sticker that says not for road use on it - is this because itll be feck-off loud and therefore illegal or what? I know the de-cat is officially illegal, but what about an unsilenced centre-section?

Thanks

Matt

no actual noise limits because enforcing it would be too hard, you would need a set of values for all sorts of atmospheric conditions.

But they can charge you for being TOO loud.

Ahh, so as long as I dont do circuits of the local cop-shop giving it a good leathering I might be okay?! ;)

Cheers Ben! (once again!)

thing is, the loops is when it comes to testing.

HOw do they test if its too loud? they dont on the spot..........what is too loud, when you get to a garade do they have the equipment, no....in most cases they sign saying its impossible to do so and your off.......till nxt time.

Do cars not have a problem on track days with loud exhausts? Im sure my mate went somewhere and some guys werent aloud on due to the exhausts being to noisey!

yes, but thats not public highway.

the circut sets its own limits, they wont have any if they are in the middle of nowhere, get no noise complaints, wont harm nature etc etc.........

tracks are a diff beast.

Yeah - I wonder if the neighbours ever thought about complaining about my Magnex - my GF can hear me enter the estate 1/3 mile away from in the house LOL

circuits will impose noise limits between 93 and 103 dBA, typically measured 50 cm from the car at 2/3 max revs. Without a mid silencer you will find it difficult meeting those thresholds. I have opted for a silencer on the k-tec exhaust and with the induction kit, I get about 94 dBA.

If you dont intend taking the car on circuit, as Ben says youll be ok as long as you dont nail it just as you pass a copper. I once saw a guy in front of me in a TVR Griff making an F1-style start, only to be waved and stopped by a copper 200 meters down the road...

The SVA tests for a kit car are less than 101 dBA at 0.5m from the exhaust outlet(s). So this must give some idea regards road legal noise requirements?
