JAMason's Clio 172

  Clio 172
I was thinking of doing something similar to mine. Was thinking of doing graphite grey gordini stripes like on the RB Clio's (theirs is white though)

Iv seen a couple of silver clio's with anthracite gordini stripes. This one looks OK, I just cant get on with the full length bonnet stripes. That's why I am looking at making up a set of MK3 Clio Cup ones and having them finish about halfway down the bonnet. Got to get the wheels refurbished to suit the stripe as well!

French rubbish!! my window regulator has stopped working and OBVIOUSLY it was in the open position when it happened! My evening was spent stripping it down, working out how the motor worked and then manually winding the window back up. I have disconnected the motor for now before I get a new one, although I will need to strip the door off and locate the rattle that has now developed!

Also had a play with an old camera the other night. :) not been too good at night photography before so had done some research and managed to geta couple, but this was the nicest.

I am aware its got some blur and the car was filthy, so its far from perfect, but its a start! I think a new camera is on the cards this year!

Its been a long while since I updated this. It will be a year ago on the 28th of July that I had the belts and stuff done along with a full service and nothing else major has changed. Until now!!

I have just ordered several more bits and will be giving the car a good overhaul in the next month or two when I service it. I did plan to sell it but have had a change of heart and want to spruce it up ready for another years use and enjoyment!

I still haven't lifted a finger sorting this car out. 60% of the parts are just sat in my flat ready to be fitted. The other 40% of the parts are either on order or I am trying to decide between different options! i've just been too busy driving it to start work! I popped along to meet some fellow owners last weekend. :)

Cheers man. I really didn't bring my A game to that event for the photos though, I regret not staying longer and getting more of the rest of the guys.

In other news, I have been spending again this evening! :p

So far I have sat around in my flat:
  • 6l of Engine oil
  • Oil filter and air filter
  • Sump Gasket
  • Genuine Renault topmount kit x2
  • 16mm hubcentric wheel spacers
  • 5mm wheel spacers
  • Front brake discs (Mintex)
  • Rear brake discs (Mintex) with bearings
  • Rear disc spacer/washer x2
  • Rear Hub nuts x2
  • New pads all round (Mintex)
  • AUX radio connection
  • Ate TYP200 Super Gold brake fluid
And tonight to top off the brake refresh, I have ordered a set of Matt Lewis Racing Braided Brake Lines! Next, its onto the suspension! :)

Placed more orders last night... Ordered a new sump to replace mine as its leaking from a crack thats been repaired badly. After that the flood gates opened and I ordered the suspension stuff I need as well!

Got a set of front 172 cup dampers on their way, some new front shock bump stops, a new set of rear 172 dampers as well and 5l of type D coolant.

I'm scared to look at the invoices for how much this has cost me over the last month or two!! Looking forward to getting it all sorted though! :)

That's some list mate haha. Be brand new hopefully.
I know! I need to book my mechanic in for the day, got to find a weekend where the weather is good so I can fire up the BBQ while he sorts my car out for me! Im not scared of the spanners but I think most of this work is far passed my skill set! haha.

I have put all the receipts in the book pack folder for the cars history, got to back the history up! :) It should be spot on when its all finished, I will need to book a track day with it to get the most out of all the work.

I'm not sure Jamie's on here any more, he is part of the admin team on the CSOC facebook forum thing. He arranged the meet where the above photos were taken. There isn't a lot to say about it build wise, its just a super clean and well loved Cup with trophy seats and a few other little touches! He sold it and bought it back and it was also stolen off his drive at one point and found on the back of a lorry. He put it up for sale a few months back and then came to his senses!!! :D

Made some progress on the clio today. New top mounts and cup dampers all round, spacers all round and fitted an Aux to the radio. Wasn't without problems though!!
Rears were easy enough to swap! Stripped the front dampers off in a few minutes as well, then when it came to building up the new ones with the new top mounts... I noticed the top hat spacer on one of the top mounts was totally different, about 3-4mm shorter. Once we built everything up it was pinching and not letting the bearing rotate. Luckily I was put in contact with a couple of members of the north-west clio sport Facebook page and an hour round trip later I was back on the drive rebuilding the dampers and Top mounts and putting the car back together. This time, with 5mm rear spacers and a set of 16mm fronts. Last part of the day, I fitted an Aux jack to the radio, unfortunately I totally forgot to connect the aerial! so that all needs to come out again to get my radio back! Tracking is the next job on my list and I still have a boot full of brakes and stuff to fit! (y)

Car is going in for more new tyres and tracking today as well after getting the suspension all sorted. Had a new sump and a full service about a month or two a go now as well!

Tyres - Done (twice now!)
Timing belt kit - Done
Cylinder head seals - Done
Dephaser pulley - Done
Auxiliary drive belt kit - Done
oil filter - Done (twice now!)
5litres elf oil - Done (twice now!)
Top mounts and bearing - Done
Rear brake discs with spacers and bearings
Pipercross panel filter - Done
standard airbox - Done
172 cup dampers - Done
Front wheel bearings
Tracking/Alignment - Done
aux input/iPod connector - Done

Only things left to do are brakes and wheel bearings and I have those, along with braided lines, new brake fluid and some new coolant, all in the boot! Had the parts for over 5 months, just haven't sorted them yet!

@Saamjohn - cheers, it's come out loads better than I expected. Thought it was going to look properly crap, it only looks a bit rubbish instead!!! Haha. I'm keeping it for now, will lool at wheel refurbishments and see if I can get them done to match the stripe.

@josh11490 - I got the sump off a bloke called Kelvin Heard over on the Facebook Clio Sport Owners Club page. He has done me a few bits if bobs for reasonable cash. Then a bloke who goes by the Facebook name Mersy Clio Sport replaced it for me in his garage for £80! Best getting on ebay or joining the fb page and asking for one on there.

Fitted new track rod ends yesterday and all new brakes. Had to file a bit of the rear pads face down to get them in, belive thats the Mintex pads though, they all seem to come a tad too thick.

I did tighten the nut up!!

Old front pads didn't look too bad, but were heavily scored on the rear from the pitted discs.
DSC_0408_zpsmdf0hc6g.jpg

Rear discs and pads were a terrible state and one of the bearings had given up and fell apart.

Nice 172 mate. I'm sure I remember you from the 106 Rallye forum. I was dan_87 had loads of Pugs over the years. Miss my White S1 Rallye like mad.

Yer, I was on the 106RR and OC pages with my rallye and various other saxos and 106s for years! I still miss my old rallye as well, brilliant fun and it really did make me grin every time I drove it or even looked at it. Just wasn't practical for me any more. The Clio is doing it's job for now, it's good fun but seriously lacks in character. Cheers though, it's a nice example regardless! Haha.

More parts! Picking up my new engine mounts Monday, apparently they have been delivered to my office!

Once I have those, I will get a weekend to stick them on along with this!
FB_IMG_1451743578616_zps3yawmblg.jpg

And finally do a brake fluid and coolant change and stick the new braided lines on. It's all coming together.

I fancy one of these. You fitted it yet?

No, pick up my new engine mounts tomorrow and need to find a weekend to get it all in. MOT is this month as well, so want to get it all done before then. :) will give feed back once it's on and sorted.

  Clio 172
Also don't suppose you have a Powerflex part number for it do you?
Sorry, I missed that bit of your post! Part number is PFF60-221

And here it is positioned in my new engine mounts. Got a new gearbox mount to throw on as well while I'm in there! :)

You can get them on eBay for the clio 197. It's the clio cup stripe for the mk3. I'll get some better photos this weekend once all the work has been done and dusted! :)

Little update! Still haven't fitted the engine mounts as It failed it's MOT on ball joints. Ended up spending my only free weekend in January swapping them over for new ones. It's now passed its MOT.

I would like to get the engine mounts fitted, swap the brake lines over for the braided ones with new fluid and do a coolant flush... but I have lost interest in it at the moment... I have put 4000 miles on it in the last year and I am seriously leaning towards selling it on to someone who will enjoy it on track and use it properly while I use the missus car for the time being! I seem to spend more taking pictures of it than I do driving it!

Work continues on the old 172! After coming close to selling it last month for an absolutely lovely MK1 Eunos Roadster with daft low mileage and absolutely no rust and a full history, the owner decided to keep it so the Clio got taken off the market!

I planned to finally get around to getting some jobs done this Sunday, the plan was to fit a new dogbone powerflex mount, replace both upper engine mounts with the ones I got back in early Jan and the upper powerflex one and start painting a few bits of the engine bay. This happened pretty soon after starting to remove the old bush...

12805993_10153258014501682_8348060363820553490_n.jpg

At this stage I decided its best to down tools as I was clearly not in a fit state to be working on anything mechanical (very hungover) and move on to the paint!

Before:
12800217_10153257945201682_6706067077983682635_n.jpg

I moved the car into the garage, removed all the covers I wanted painting, gave them a good clean, sanded them a little bit, cleaned them some more and degreased them all and let them dry. Then set about putting a few coats of primer on and about 4 coats each of satin black. I then spent my day trying to shake the hangover and placing orders on ebay for a few other little bits and bobs for under the bonnet while the paint dried.
12109147_10153257945271682_6000993033868215539_n.jpg

Once it was finally dry to the touch, I put it all back together and I am already pretty happy with how it looks under the bonnet! :)
DSC_0619_zpsn504jmcp.jpg

I will give everything a good clean under the bonnet when the rest of the stuff arrives for the bay:

Battery cover,
Oil Cover decals
Coolant bottle replaced
Polished letters on the inlet.

That's pretty much all I plan to do under there for now! :)

It's the little things. Put the engine cover stickers on to finish that off. Just got to get my battery cover in and order a new expansion tank.

These also arrived today. :)
