Just a quick question re: fitting new brakes.

  Clio 172 cup
I'm changing the front brakes on my 172 cup tomorrow and was gonna use the following guide.

http://www.renaultforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=23690&page=3

In which it states..
"Also, make sure the keys are in the ignition, but with the ignition off.If your car has ABS the pump could be damaged if you have the ignition switched on."

Surely the keys don't HAVE to be in the ignition, right? Or am I missing something? :S

The ABS part was irrelevant and I'm quite aware of that, but I couldn't at the time figure out why it was saying to put the key in the ignition in the first place. Although having just fitted my brakes, I now have the answer. You need the key in the ignition to bypass the steering lock to allow u better access to the calipers etc. Quite obvious when you think about it now. haha.

I'm guessing you didn't read my other post? lol

You need it in the ignition so you can turn the steering wheel to allow you better access. Common sense when you think about it.

I have never ever needed to turn the wheel whilst changing brakes and I'm struggling to see why you would need to?

I'd rather have the keys in my pocket so I knew there was no chance of the car being started whilst up on jacks/stands etc.

Oh and apologies about the ABS thing, I re-read it and edited my post

Same here, personally I don't want the hub to move while i'm trying to undo the carrier mounting bolts. More chance of the socket slipping off them, you want it held against the steering lock static imo.

i turn the wheel outwards when im changing discs as it gives you more room if you need to use a breaker bar if the bolts are tight
