  clio 172 phase 2
Hi my first post on here so bare with me,,

Today i bought a clio 172 phase 2002 reg with 72k on the clock, for £1900 , I knew it needed a few bits and pieces, so just wondering how much im looking at to get the following done and are they easy to do myself,

Faults or need doing

:Cam belt kit
:Steering wheel grip ruined (right one)
: Passenger seat doesnt tilt
:Gearbox, engine clonks when changing gear, poss engine mounts ??

Any tips or advice would be great.

Is the price ok or have i bought a dud.

Body work etc is immaculate and looks tidy came with 11months mot as well,

Cheers dan

  Seat Ibiza
Cambelt kit and aux belt kit, got mine done from a specialist at £600,
Steering wheel, there is someone on here that retrims the whole steering wheel for £150 or something like that.

And, if you join up you can get genuine parts from a renault shop on here for good prices, so not sure how much the mounts would be. I think you can get engine and gearbox uprated ones for £120.

Hope that helps.

My seat didn't tilt, turns out the wire had come loose from the frame, think there's a descriptive thread on here somewhere but if you take the cover off at the back and reach up inside there's a White plastic mount and it should be attached to the frame. That fixed mine.
Wheel wise contact arran182. He does an amazing re trim. Search for his thread and look at the pics.

I just bought a ph2 172 cup, £950, Just had cambelt done, Has the same issue with the clunking noise, Apparently its the top gearbox mount, I need a couple of bits respraying on it due to vandalism form the pervious owner, Bonnet, front bumper and roof then its perfect. I would say you may have paid a couple of hundred quid above average but it doesnt sound too bad, You can pick up steering wheels on here for less than £100, Cambelt will cost you around the £500 mark and the seats always play up in these things :( Good luck with it.

  clio 172 phase 2
This was the cheapest one i could find around my area the cambelt may have been done but its a fonance recovery so the garage i bought it from said they cantsay whether the belt has been done or not so for peace of mind ill get it sorted, i went to look at a 182 with 60k for £3000 yesterday but no cam belt and no mot, so i gave it a miss.

Where's your "area" mate? Any garage/trader that say's its a finance repossesion is probebrly saying that as they've got no history for the vehicle... assume it needs to be done.

Getting the cam belt done by nvs £360 plus vat so not too bad

That sounds rather cheap. Do you know if NVS are competent to do this work?
Cambelt and auxiliary belt kits alone will make up a fair part of that price and do they have the timing tools (which are over a hundred quid on top)?
Also, you should be getting the auxiliary belt and tensioners(?) fitted.
If you're in Berkshire, I'd be calling Danny at 519 Automotive if I were you.

Does the gearbox clunk going into first or all the time in all gears? Mine clunks sometimes going into first which apparently is the exhaust manifold tapping the subframe. Might not be an issue (saves you sons money)

So NVS are like a national franchise - National Vehicle Servicing?
Be very careful. I'd do what I suggested in my previous post.

  clio 172 phase 2
Ive seen on forums that they are pretty good, yeah national vehicle servicing, the bloke said they do the clio 172 and 182 quite often,

  clio 172 phase 2
Oh and as for the big clunking noise im pretty sure its a gearbox mount it had a new gearbox and clutch fitted in march, so just seen paper work saying one of the mounts was worn

I wouldn't trust them to do it right. You see so many with timing out because a none specialist has done it b

Agreed.
My new berg had it's belts done at direct cars Sheffield and you can tell. Doesn't pull right in any gear tbh and lacks the grunt of my previous 172. Soon as funds allow Birchdown will be getting a call to change all my belts and time her up properly.

  Mazda Mx5 + Clio 172
Oh and to clarify the belts were done before I took ownership! I would never use a non specialist on an RS

there is no form of warning light or anything to say timing is out unless its specificaly checked or its out badly and you will be able to tell by sound of engine

ill not say how much i got my cambelt , waterpump and dephaser pully done for then if people are sying £380 is cheap but with mine i got the parts myself through work apart from dephaser

  DON'T SEND ME PM'S!!
So if the timing was out wouldnt a fault come up on the dash or obd,

I did one today that had the timing out. Been like it for 4 years since the last change apparently. I'd estimate it was out by enough to have cost 15 to 20bhp, yet the car still drove "fine". One notable thing was it only did 34mpg on a long motorway run

Re the clunking gearbox - my 182 developed this, the gearbox mount had worked its way loose.

Simply whip the battery out and tighten the two smaller bolts either side of the big bolt under the battery tray. (or all three if the big-uns loose)

  clio 172 phase 2
Cheers guys your all great help, still finding my way around the car, the exhaust seems really loud like chav 4inch exhaust loud, but check and its got a new genuine back box, are they usually loud or is there prob an exhaust joint blowing,

and also my dash is very basic now trip computer or anything, just mileage and clock, is this normal ???

Got an average of 42 mpg on way home Danny, the car is quicker for sure!

If you're going for a non-specialist for the belts do what IS1 says above i.e. check they are using the correct timing tools (not the laser ones which bend) and that they are using a full cam belt and aux belt kit - and seriously considder taking it to 519.
Sooo many threads on here from people who got a reliable mechanic to do the belt change and it's not done quite right. Best case you loose a few bhp, worst case a belt snaps and you're in a world of hurt. You really want NVS to give you a list of what parts they are planning to use and post it on here so one of the traders can confirm if they are doing it on the cheap or not.

I've got a ph2 172 2001 plate and the dash trip has more functionality than you say your one has which cannae be right. Have you tried pressing the button on the end of the right hand side stalk (the one with the wiper controls on). Should cycle through the milage, amt of fuel used, average speed, mpg, range to next re-fuel etc.

  clio 172 phase 2
The website for nvs says they use genuine parts, heres the website www.thenvs.com
.so what tools should they be using if the laser ones arent any good, guys ill go ahead with it , and let you now what they are like, is dan at 519 automotive mobile or at a garage only, cheers

Mate, if you want to use NVS then go ahead... you pay your money you take your chance! If it works out for you and if you're happy then great but if it goes wrong or they get it wrong expect this lot to do the "i told you so" dance. The warnings are there not to scare people to traders such as myself, Fred and Danny but to illustrate how easy most "garages" fudge this service up because they don't fully understand the process or use the correct tools. The Laser tools are IMO perfect for DIY use as they will only bend IF you're a moron and use them to try and free off the pulley locking fixings. It will however hold the cams in position just fine but you still need the cam sprocket tool to unlock the fixings (This is normally where the "garage" will go wrong as AutoData, ATi, Etc don't make you aware it is needed).

I used to be mobile to and only recently made the decision to stop as fuel was just getting too expensive compared to rent and rates. There are some good people out there still doing it though and this job doesn't have to be done in a surgical environment.

The one thing you need to be sure is that he releases the cam sprockets and IF there's any oil leaks from the upper cover that it is removed, cleaned and resealed! If he's there for 4hrs or less then get him to call me, i've got a job for him.

  clio 172 phase 2
Yeah the bloke said its prob gonna take 4.5-6 hours cheers mick either way it could work out either ill have a good job done for cheap or i can inform you guys not to use them, ill see and let you all know.im guessing that if he doesnt time ut properly they would have to come back and do it again ??

DON'T let nvs do your belts . Take it to a specialist how many times have I heard "we do lots of 172/182s before hes not gonna tell you yours is the first or 2nd one he's ever done now is he :) ! Please go to a specialist for the peace of mind may cost a few more quid but so worth it. Only job on an RS clio you don't want to risk getting wrong !

my all time record is 2 hours ;) Usually work a little more methodically than that though but it was a bit of a "see how quick i can do it" thing

It doesn't cost much more to go to a Specialist though that's the thin as I do them for £380. Personally I don't slate a company or its ability for not being able to do the job without seeing their previous work. Maybe the guy is ex-Renault and knows this job inside out?

I've been working on these for years including an X65 Cup car and know Fred/Sam at BTM fairly well yet I still struggle to win CS members in my area to my doors because of the lack of trust for me on here. I'm not jelous/bitter as that's business and as BTM are well established on here its bound to take time to win people over but that doesn't mean I can't do the job right and sometimes a new supplier is plenty capable and isn't given a chance to prove themselves around this place... Be fair peeps.

  clio 172 phase 2
well got the belt fitted today by www.thenvs.com and the car runs sweet as a nut, so happy days, £394 all in including aux belt. as i had a chat with them about going elsewhere etc. all in all im very happy, I know some of you said not to go with them, but i would of gone to 519 automotive but bedfords a bit of a trek for me. The bloke who fitted the belts said hes done about 15-20 of the clio rs belts now, and said he wouldnt even consider doing one unless he had all the correct locking tools etc. Only took 4 hours as well.
