  Clio 172 Cup
Hi All,

I'm Dominic - Registered on here a few years back when I was going to get a clio sport but went another route instead...

Having Px'd my current car (Mazda RX8 231) due to high running costs I have bought a Renault clio 172 Cup :)

Looking forward to gettting involved in the community on here and attending meets, anyone from the Buckinghamshire area on here?

Cheers,
Dominic

Thanks for the kind comments everyone. Mazda RX8s are very difficult to sell at the moment mate because of stupidly bad fuel consumption (late teens early 20s - MPG), expensive servicing, tyres & the "what if" scenarios are potentially very costly if the cars not maintained properly (rotor tips, starting problems, compression etc), high oil usage etc all these contributing factors have resulted in a savagely depreciating asset. This purchase (clio) was abit of a cost saving exercise.

Welcome mate. I did the same and moved from an RX 8 for exactly the same reason. You won't regret it. Apart from looks th only thing I miss abou te Rex is the way it delivered its power.

I saw the price and actually said 'ouch' out loud as it looked a lot for a 172 cup, but tbh having read the advert and how recent belts etc were all done, I dont think you got a bad deal at all.

Sorry to go off topic a tad but I've heard it said quite a lot now that RX-8's are terrible on fuel. How can a 1.3(?) engine be so uneconomical?

Hi, there isn't a massive number of members in this area but there are a few. I live near Brackley and work in MK so drive through Buckingham most days

Thanks mate. Nice to hear that as it was a concern. I pick up the clio on wednesday/thursday next week paid deposit on thursday, its currently having cambelt etc done by the garage. I'm so excited love getting a "new" car to me. I plan to take it to "the ring" and some uk circuits. How do you find the performance difference to the rx8? Obviously I test drove the clio but not for long enough to know what its capable of (busy roads etc).

Hi mate, thanks for your response to my thread. Cool, would be good to have a mini meet or something in buckinghamshire/aylesbury/mk ?

Sad times.

Hopefully your Clio wont cost you in parts what the RX-8 did in fuel.

Welcome aboard

The 182 is no where near as smooth as the Rex in its power delivery. Also the handling is not as grounded. I know this doesn't sound good so far but bear with me. The Clio is a very different car in every way. I find the Clio more of a raw experience, its more chuckable and more aggressive. Its also not as fragile and you definately wont need to treat it with kid gloves. Other things that made it a no brainer for me are economy, parts prices (plugs alone on the Rex were a painful price) and the fact you can drive the Clio not worrying your going to flood it and need a new cat at a silly price or have to pay for new coil packs (the list goes on). The positives far out way the negatives and im sure you wont be dissapointed. If you start to worry just think of the cost difference for your trip to the ring for petrol!!

Cheers and enjoy.

It's being done by a garage the car sales place use called macs garage near Witney (Oxfordshire):

Hopefully they will do it properly then!

I had a similar situation. The trader wouldn't discount the car at all for the price of the cambelt change, insisted his guy do it. I met the guy and I got some reassurance from the fact that his first words were "I hate doing cambelts on those" as he had done a few before.
Anyway, I got the timing checked by Fred at BTM. It was perfect. You may want to get the timing checked by an RS specialist as if it is out, you won't necessarily know, you may just be shy of 15 odd bhp.

Is Bedford close to you?
Sideways Danny (519 Automotive) gets very good reviews on here and seems to have the cambelt (and general Renaultsport) knowledge down to a "t".
He's on the traders listing and this is an extract of his contact details:
It's well worth getting to know the right specialist - they are worth their weight in gold!

"You can email me (Dan) direct on enquiries@519automotive.co.uk or Paul on Sales@519automotive.co.uk
Also, you can still give us a call on 07880 626200."
