Just picked up my first Clio 172 Sport

  Clio 172 sport
Hi All,

I am new to the Clio 172 Sport.

Ive Just picked mine up (On the back of a trailer) Its a 53 plate with 115k on the clock with the Dephaser-pulley on its way out.

Ive been trolling throught the net but need some kind of guide how to fit a new one. Do i need a cam and crank locking tool?

I have changed cambelts and water pumpers on other cars by locking the cams with drill bits, Or Mole grips on the camshaft.

Or unless someone is in my area (St Helens) which can give me a hand and can pay them to show me.

Its going to be a ongoing project as it needs other little bits doing like the drivers seat won't fold, the heater blower does not work ect.

Take it to someone who Knows these engines or it will end up costing more in the long run.

Welcome by the way !

Aso above, Dont attempt to do it yourself. These engines need Specialist Attention, if you get it slightly out timing wise it will just drink fuel.. like mine seems to be

I am beginning to strip the top end of the engine and to be honest it like the 1.6vvt engine. Which i have worked on before. As long as the cams don't move and crank your laughing. as long as they are locked you can't go wrong. i just wondered if someone has the actual tool to lock them just to be on the safe side.

To time it up properly, you MUST release the pulleys on the camshafts. It can't be done any other way. Ignore them who say you shouldn't do it at home, you can - as long as you have the correct tools.

You need 3 tools, the crank pin, the cam horse shoe and the pulley locking tool (this is used to lock them into place whilst you undo/tighten the nuts/bolts)

As long as you have the tools, you'll be fine!

No - to time it up WITH the new belt on!

Renault is your best bet for the tools!

I have decided to get someone (Qualified mechanic and insured) to change it for me then i can blame them if it turns to mushrooms.

Another thread taken over by the cambelt police. You don't need a specialist its not rocket science to change the belts on these engines. People go on like it's a v12 Lambo.

They are a mobile mechanic and said he has done them before. I was supprised when i tryed taking the rocker cover off and thats what holds the cams in place, so i just put the bolts back in and left it. so you can not even lock the cams with mole grips which ive used before.

My mate is a mobile mechanic and a local Renault dealer near me subcontract cambelts on these to him.

Please go back and make sure you've put them back in in the correct order and torque. Christ.

i need seal up the rocker cover so will have to remove it when the guy comes to sort out the dephaser pulley and cambelt so will make sure its spot on before i start it.

Just thought i would say what a rubbish design the engine. No timing marks, cams held in by the rocker cover.
