Just purchased a 53' 172 Cup. Proud new owner!

Hello all,

today I have just purchased a lovely little 172 Cup and I am already in love. My very poor car history consists of a 1.4L 2002 Ford Fiesta in Burgundy, so as you can imagine this is a bit of a change!

Went to my first track day at Brands Hatch a few days ago and was amazed by the speed and look of these cars so had to have one. Am taking it into the garage Monday to get a new cam belt as it has 70k on the clock and no history of it being changed. Does anyone know where I can get the little '172' badge for the side panel as mine has fallen off on one side, and also a sport badge for under the Renault badge.

Here she is:

(hope this works!)

This is the advert picture I will aim to clean her up and take some more soon!

Hi, welcome to the club.

Best advise is to join up here and search for sale threads / post wanted threads for the bits your after. It might also be worth your time searching for timing belt threads before you take the car in on Monday. Depending on where your taking it, you could be potentially making a costly mistake.

No disrespect to your friend but has he done a cambelt change on one of these cars before and does he have the correct locking tools etc.?

If not, you'd be well advised to nip down to Rentech in Portsmouth to get it done.

Another Southampton Cup!
Welcome :)

Yeah he has done it before and as far as I know he has all the correct tools etc, a lot of his friends race Clios and he regularly works on them too so he has worked with them before. I have no reason to doubt him but appreciate your concern

Thanks for the links. Quick update: gear knob inserts added, rear lights changed for standard ones, Cup 172 badges added/replaced, head unit changed, steering wheel thumb grip half replaced (bodge job),

i am off to sea for 4 months tomorrow so will miss my pride and joy immensely!

Aaargh that is gorgeous!

I wish they did Full Fat 172's in Mondial Blue, bloody love it. Having said that, I do really like my Flamer.

This is the mistake I made and it cost me about 4k to sort - wish I'd taken it to a specialist.

Lovely cup mate

Looks clean. I have one myself and it still surprises me at times.
As others have said make sure the belt is done by someone with knowledge of this engine. There a piles of horror stories on here.
