Just sold my Silver 172 Cup and bought new 197

  RS Clio 200
Hi I just thought I'd let people know that I've just bought a 197. I owned my 172 Cup for three years and although it was a thrilling car to drive I have to say that the 197 is a better car.

I'm getting a bit tired of hearing 172/182 owners b**ching about the 197. Take it from someone who's owned both cars, the 197 IS a step up. It represents the new generation of hot hatches, both in its size, styling, build quality and performance.

As more and more of my friends get used to seeing my car, they are loving its juicy sophisticated looks. The 172's and 182's still look lovely, but the 197 is a step into the new generation.

In two or more years time when the engine has really bedded in and there are more of them on the road, I'd like to see what the haters have to say then!

FIver says you wouldnt have said any of that if youstill owned a 172.

Personally i think they are ugly, and look like every other car on the road now thanks to those bloody EU regulations. You may as well bought a 307 cos they look the same.

sorry, but ifyou wanted step into new generation then you should have got a corsa vxr. smaller engine with all the fun of a turbo, and for the same money. Looks better, probably more challenging to drive as assposed to 100% computer aided and it doesnt that the cheap as chips air vents behind the front wheel arches

Unfortunately for you most ppl actually admit here that the 197 looks really phat. Perhaps you should actually go and look at one in real life. Oh and by the way, try reading some reviews from Top Gear and 5th Gear before passing your judgement. Clearly you havn't driven the car otherwise you wouldn't be randomly slating things like "computer aided" lol and would appreciate the precision of the cars supreme handling over all the cars you have mentioned.

p.s I sold my 172 so I could get a 197, nobody forced me lol

Not really tried your hardest to gain friends or fit in with your fellow renaultsport owners have ya.

We have enough softies on here I think.

In my eyes the 197 is the better car. People keep saying how their 182s are faster, yet all the people that have driven the 197s have said how it corners like it's on rails. Isn't that what the RS Clios are about rather than straight line speed ??

I know most 172 owners come from 1.2s and they think they've got the beast of the road and that's where the jokes lie at the start of these threads, but come on guys. Even if it is faster, why brag about it on a website to fellow owners. You end up looking like a c**t.

Having said that though, I would never buy a 197, because for the money, I could have something a couple of years older but much higher up the list in terms of quality and performance.

Might take the plunge and get a 172 (phase1) for a play later this year though, they're dirty cheap, according to Autotrader and Parkers, if I sold my DCI I could go and buy a 172 with average miles and good condition for the same money.

I like your attitude mate, fair and honest.

Thought Mk2's were good looking cars, just seen new 197 sport.WOWWWW!!!!!

They are phat mate. It's always the same, whenever a new style comes out people have to adjust and some people arn't mature enough to reconise that.

I remember when the mkII Clio first came out and it was completely different. Everyone slated it for having a flat weird back! Now it has to be one of the best looking hatches ever made!

Same with the Megane.

Same with the MR2!

Same with the 197!

the 197 is more expensive online v online than a 225cup its about £350 difference which you could level out so they both cost the same and have 265bhp and 270lbft in a car a 100kg heavier. but do same economy and only be 1grp insurance higher.
renault dropped the ball with the new 197 and with the new LUXE model out and the 197cup around the corners some initial shortfalls will be picked up.

even so the 182 came with fullleather, xenon, climate, cruise if the 197 came with all the kit the 182 did then it would be a separation between that and a basic R26.

at the moment id go for the meg a remapped one is silly quick.

There seems to be a pattern of people that disrespect the 197's. They seem to be 172/182 owners that perhaps feel threatened or jeleous that times are moving on...

Yeah everyone is jealous. They don't choose not to own one, they just can't afford one. Right? :S

And why do ppl insist on saying it's slow if it gets to 62mph in 6.9 secs? A standard 172 or 182 does it in 7.1!!

Well, if we're talking figures, then there are a couple of points to make;

1. The 182 is capable of 0-60 in around 6.5 proven. Autocar recorded a 6.3 and I know my gtech meter (however accurate) recorded a 6.4 in my 182Cup.

2. Even if the 197 is faster (which it isn't), it feels slower.

I do laugh at the build quality stories too. It has better materials for sure, and is a nicer place to be, but there are countless stories of rattling doors, creaky suspensions, kangarooing, noisy brakes. Shall I go on? Many of the 182 issues appear to be present in this so called far superior car that's moved the game on.

It is a lovely machine and handles and rides superbly. I would have owned one if it were not for 3 things - It doesn't feel fast and doesn't stir my soul. The steering sucks. I do a lot of M-way miles and I value my hearing.

I didn't actually think the 197s steering was 'that' bad when you had it up and running at speed, although it was like being on glass at slow speed.

Mind you I found the CTRs to feel similar.

I found the new CTR steering to be light years better. It always felt perfectly weighted at all speeds IMO.

For sure the 197 steering gets better with speed, but at parking pace it is horrid with a capital F.

On the warm up and cool down laps I did it was as bad as at parking speeds.

It was only when you really started properly leaning on it it weighted up and felt a little better.

Can't do that...have steering that only works/feels right at 9/10ths or above.

The key word there was 'that' it did get better at pace when it weighted up but still never left me 100% confident in what the front wheels where doing.

Slow speed at a mini roundabout coming back to the dealers and I nearly ended up going round in a circle. Hard acceleration in the lower gears was very origional CTR'esque in it's very light feel.

Still I am just bitter as I can't afford one either!

Er, i have looked at them, over and over again, and not once have i managed to think it looks nice. The day i buy a car that meets the new EU standards will be the day i give up on my life, they look naff and the same as every other car in the same class.

True i haven't driven one, but i have no intention to based on the looks, and the fact its loaded with driving aids. Only version i would consider is the cup racer.

To be fair, if you drove a Cup racer on the road, you'd probably do well to make friends with a spinal surgeon before hand ;)

It has the same driving aids as a 182!....Except better!

And you can switch them off.

Your excuses are lame and demonstrate that of somebody who tries to comment on something you know nothing about i.e a car you have never even driven!!! lololol

Have I ever said RS's are not cool?! I used to own a Cup from new from 3 years. If you read the post properly I think you'll find that I have no problem with any RS, it's the existing 172/182's owners that appear to have a problem with the replacement model of their car.

Top Gear and 5th Gear love the 197. But I suppose they are wrong arn't they!!! lolol

Its called an 'opinion' and everyones is different. No opinion can be wrong if its what that person believes.

My personal opinion is the 197 is very subtle, but I like the arches, I also like the interior when it has the recaros. It could do with a genuine 194bhp as most seem down on power. It could also do with an exhaust that sounds like Ado's car as standard.

i dont have a 182 :rasp:
i have no intention to drive one either, fugly. lololololol as you seem to say

This guy that engages in unholy acts with his 197 is a bit of a strap on... dude, it's a f**king clio, not a piece of motoring history or a supercar... it's £17k, not £170k... :boring:

Clio's dont get better as they get newer, they just get more grown up... that's a bad thing. Williams was the best and it went rapidly down hill from there after

Hustlechild; I'm with Seb here mate, it's all getting incredibly boring. I am pleased for you that you like your new car. It would be a shame if you had bought it only to decide you didn't like it that much, and I can understand you raving about it as it's your new toy.

I have never driven a 197 so obviously can not speak for its performance, but looks wise it's just not my cup of tea. I think you have to realise and come to terms with the fact that not everyone is going to like it, and it's not because they are jealous or can't afford one, it's just plain and simply not their cup of tea either.

When the new Clio came out I was quite excited about the idea of possibly getting a newer version of mine. However, after going to see it and finding various things I didn't like about it, and not being able to get a darn test drive as Renualt in their infinite wisdom decided not to get a 1.6 in for their demonstrator, I changed my mind and decided to spend the cash I had reserved on tarting mine up abit.

Personally speaking I am waiting to see what Renault will do with the new Twingo. So far I love the look of it and can't wait to get a test drive in one. If I decide I like it I will probably buy one but I will not be getting rid of my Clio. I love it too much.

At the end of the day you should respect that we all have different opinions on all sorts of different cars for many different reasons. It would be totally boring if we all thought the same as we would all have the same car, and that would be very dull indeed.

How about you smile and be happy with the fact that some people like the 197, and politely agree to differ with those that don't for whatever reason?

Mate I completely respect what your saying, I've not dissed anyone or anything on here. It's the 172/182 owners that are putting across the disrespectful remarks. It doesn't bore me, if people want to have a go at the 197 for silly reasons and not accept their car has just as many flaws, then that's upto them....

Perhaps though you should ask the 172/182's owners to stop being so rude and being a bit more respectful. All I've done is try and emphasive that this is very good car, albiet a different car for a new generation which does not necessarily meet with everyone's expectation.

I have provided enough references from respected people in the motoring industry and all I get is insults from people that have never actually driven the darn thing!

It does put a smile on my face, it makes me laugh! lol

I don't think the people on here who have owned 182/ 172's for a very long time have given you 'silly' reasons to be fair to them. It just comes across from you that you make out the 197 to be a superior car compared to the 182 and 172 - That is why people are objecting. The 197 has only just come out, so it's still early days for you to say the 197 is a better car altogether. Give it time to find it's place then in a few years it's a more fair comparison to the 182/ 72's... Also alot of people have already looked at the 197's spec and read things about it, so it's not as if we don't have a good idea on the car. This is a Clio forum, expect people to know what they are talking about when it comes to Clio's ;)

How clearly did you read my last post? As I have previously stated I owned a 172 Cup for three years. I have stated that it is an awesome car and love RS. I've also said that the 197 will not really come into it's own until about 2 years time when the engines have been well run in and people are more familiar with the styling.

It's not me doing the dissing mate....Peace :0)

How do I upload a picture to my profile?

Ok I've sussed it! Let's see if it appears haha

Picture doesn't seem to be appearing. Do I need to be a member?

drinking vintage wine and smoking fine cuban cigars is what I would say are the finer things in life, driving around in a Ferrari are finer things in life... driving a £17k clio that nearly any 21+ year old on here can afford on tick isn't what I'd consider the finer aspect of life tbh lol... you'd get more kudos picking up a 2nd hand E46 M3, E39 M5, Skyline R33 GTR, Mitsi Evo, Lotus Exige etc etc IMO, as there's no way anyone can argue a Clio is better than any of those (least not as an overall package).

It's horses for courses, but all things being equal it's still a Renault at the end of the day and only has 158bhp/ton and is £17k... £5k over priced whatever way you look at it. I'm sure it handles better, but then that's something no one here will be able to exploit, pressing pedals and going that bit quicker however any idiot can do, so for all intents and purposes it's the slowest RS in that respect and that's the only reason I buy these cars. Fast cheap fun. It's no exec car, it's not a nice place to be, it's not particularly comfy, it's looks dont shout wow or draw admiring glances from passers by (unless its a Williams), so really it holds less appeal to someone off here that it would to Joe public. People buy these cars because they are cheap and fast... but the dogging potential with the larger capacity interior is a selling point

That is definately your own opinion and not necessarily shared by the motoring industry and my fellow work colleagues.

Ohh and by the way I didn't get mine on tick, well not completely. I put a 6k deposit down and got the rest on RF for 0%.

Not 21 either, an IT Professional for Vodafone at 31! And I do know the finer things in cars, as there are thousands of them in our car park at the VF World HQ!
