Just sold my subaru and bought a clio 182

Hi all, been doing a few more miles recently and my trusty old scoob was killing me in fuel costs, a mate of mine had the renult clio 182 he'd bought for his mrs, she didnt want it?

Oh well, did a deal with the scoob so now have the clio, its a 2004 car, 40k miles from new in silver and in beautiful condition, never been a fan of french cars apart from a gt turbo i had years ago and loved.
Always had cossies, focus rs, evo's and some subarus in the past but must say i was surprised, especially the level of kit the car comes with, really liking it.
Have it booked in for the cambelt next week, needed front tyres which ive ordered and will get some pics up after a good wash and polish.

Anything i should watch out for? any issues with these cars?

Have a good look at the exhaust if it is standard it is probably about to fall off.

Had it up on the ramp mate, looks like new underneath, all the exhaust looks solid, are they prone to falling apart and would it be better to replace with stainless steel one
if and when it does go?

The garage i use is a mate of mines, he does all the work on anything ive owned although he did say he has not done one of these before lol
I will be there with it though, £314 all in, sound ok?

Join up mate thier is loads of cambelt threads you see what people mean then.

Exhaust also do a search for that alot of different ones me personally Millitek Cat back system although, Yozza's are popular.

he has checked and is getting the tools required, i do trust him to do the job correctly, although bmw and subaru trained he knows his stuff, i dont think it will be a problem for him, fingers crossed.

i can imagine being in your shoes, of course people are going to favor going to people recognized on here it's a clio forum where they post as well!
ignoring that front, i really really would stress to go to a specialist, and if not then the best of luck!

if you wanted a new exhaust, speak to Fred@BTM he does the Yozzasports, best around!

A small point m8, but get the gearbox oil changed if it hasn't had it done already. Really improved my notchy gear-change no end. I've had it changed 4 times now in it's 84k life.

Standard exhausts on these are horrible. Overweight, too quiet, made of cheese and the rear tail-pipes look weedy. Plenty of alternatives out there from custom jobs, to more mainstream ones. Whereabouts are you based, by the way?

Im based in chesterfield and work in doncaster at the airport.

The exhaust may get changed, as stated above its damn quiet for such a car, im not a boyracer still but even so id like to hear the thing.
The work it needs is costing over £500 so the exhaust is on the list.
Its having a service at the same time as the belt so will drop the gearbox oil as a precaution.

As long as your mate gets all the 4 tools needed from renault and has some brain cells to rub together it'll be fine. I really don't know how so many get screwed its a cambelt change, not putting man on the moon. With the proper tools you can't really go too far wrong.

The mpg in my scoob wasnt good, loved the car and have had a few over the years but so far im impressed with the clio,was showing 40mpg at 65mph on the motorway, dropped when i put climate control on but even if its in the 30's on the way to work and back im happy.
Do the odd track day too, evven go to the nurburgring every year and would think the clio would do well round either.

Agreed, he has the required tools now, certainly not a half wit so im not worried, its a straight forward job in my eyes, just awkward and time consuming.

Just put 'cambelt snapped' into the search..... it will put you off going to your mate very quickly.
There's been untold numbers of people who have got their mate to do a cambelt that have come out and it's melted itself, been timed wrong etc etc etc.

Just go to a specialist! Getting it done right the first time will cost you less money in the long run.......

he's not just a mate thats going to change it on his drive with an adjustable spanner though, he has his own garage and is more than qualified i would have thought.
If it snaps he owes me an engine but i will look things up before it goes in and i do thank you for raising concerns, i will have a look.

I know, don't mean any disrespect to your mate, but even Renault dealers f**k up the F4R belt changes.... I wouldnt even consider sending it to someone that has never done one before.... regardless of how good they were with other engines.

You're sure he has all of the tools? There's 4 iirc.... and they're specific to the engine, not just Renault tools.

Just so happens a lad that works out of his garage is a renult specialist so guess thats where he is getting the tools from.
