K-Tecs 250bhp Turbo 172

  2008 Golf GTI Edition 30

Does sound exciting, as long as it can be replicated easily and backed up with proper figures.

Im getting slightly damp about it. 250 BHP is more than the chassis can take IMO which should make it a fekkin good drive. Will it be worth 8 grand or whatever tho? Probably not.

Dont get too excited.....bolt on turbos on renaults in the past tend to have had reliability problems. Plus your talking £3000+ for the conversion. To get the power down your gonna need a LSD £1500ish decent brakes £1000 so your talking the best part of six grand. For that you could you get an old style scooby and still keep the clio!!!!

PS Does anybody no if the new Megane turbo engine is the same block thats in the 172?

andyman 3 grand for the kit is DIY! We were talking about this at our last regional meeting, we rekon 8 grand would be the total cost to supply and fit a bolt on turbo kit (this is the cost a member was quoted who had got hold of a turbo kit) . So yeah your looking at nearer 10 with the brakes and stuff. That said to make it viable they will have to refine the conversion process and buy parts in bulk so we might see the price been a bit lower.

Courtney turbos used to do a 1.6 nova turbo conversion for 3 and a half grand. That was using a recon turbo but gives you some idea how expensive it is, as courtney had more experience with the vauxhalls than k tec do with clios (simply cos they have been out longer)

Cant see them shifting many units then. Second hand mark1 172s are selling for about eight grand now. To spend the total amount again on what the cars worth seems barmy.

Think ill stick with head work cams chips ect

The turbo megane uses diff crank, pistons, rods, diff block casting with oil feeds and return for the turbo, different cylinder head and cams with no VVT.

So basically the same engine, but a little different in everyway, but parts will be compatable.

will what, the block?

manifolds, tubro?

like i said, the internals you can mix and match, run the 172 head with the exhaust cam off the turbo, but the manifolds will bolt on but not line up perfect iirc.....but then again thye might.

totally agree m8. Much as I like the 172 your talking scoob and evo money if the coversions do turn out to be near 10 grand!

It doesnt matter how many they sell there will always going to be one or two people who want the turbo kit.

However it doesnt matter for one other reason and that that they have manged to get more publicity than they have spent on the car.

Every show they go to the turbo Clio will be on display will other K-Tec products. People go over to look at the Clio and see the other stuff K-tec is selling.

Its a trick loads of companies do to show both there abilities as tunners and to generate loads of very cheap publicity.
