keep cup or swap for mondeo st tdci

Guys, what should i do?
Im sure youll all call me an old man for even thinkin!
Reasons for swapping -
30% discount on the ford _jag employee. 23 grand but paying 16 grand.
more room in it.
loads more toys. aircon in particular!
leather.
brand new car - cups nearly 2 yrs old now.
45mpg but still VERY fast.

Reasons for keeping the cup =
dont need to extend loan by 5 grand.
good fun
low depreciation.
young lads image - not old mans car.

opinions please ==:confused:

Which plant do you work at mate?

Personally if i was getting a diesel saloon i would go for an Alfa Romeo 156 2.4 JTD. 175bhp, 42mpg and you can get them ranging from £4000 to £20000. Theyre not as unreliable as people say either if you get an older one as many of the problems will have been ironed out.

The ST is mint though

I really like the Mondeo and if you are after a car that sort of size then you cant go far wrong with the discount if you want a new car.

low depreciation? u sure...
fords are notorious for quickly losing their value.
But i thought the sporty clios hold their price quite well.
The classic clio williams are still fetching 3-4 grand 10 years later aint they?
I paid 9300 for my 03 cup about 6 months ago. 12k miles, dont think its lost too much at the min?

wrong side of 20 k im afraid !
PS. test drove the twin td the other day on the track - it fu*kin flys !!!!!!

I had a similar choice when buying the 172, I get the discount from fords as well, and nearly ended up with a ST170, after having a go in my mates one Im glad I chose the 172.

However the Mondeo is a completely different car althogether. I really like them (well more the TDCI engine) but depends if you want a big family car rather than a hot hatch.

Yeah, i was gonna go for the focus 170 as well, until i seen the cup that i ended up buying of my mate.

I would miss the nippyness of the hot hatch, but i do find it a bit small.

I just thought if i bought it and ended up not likin it, i could flog it for the same price i paid probably.

I really dont know what to do.

What dya reckon id get for the cup - 03 reg, 12k just serviced, mint all round.?

8500 -9000 maybe????

I should recomend the disel but unfortunatly I cannot.

The only reason to swop is the better MPG and the bigger car.

The Cup isnt to bad realy space wise and how often youd use the extra space is questionable in my view.

I dont understand though how you think its yor car +£5k for a mondeo. The Cups worth say £8k the mondeo another £8k I assume you means you have the extra £3k in cash to put towards?

The cost for a Mondeo is £9k (with interest) and will loose say £8k over 2yrs The cup looses say £3k over 2yrs.

£5k is a lot of money for 2yrs motoring in a Mondeo its equal to £200+ a month when you at it like that it might put some prespective to it.

Unless you do mega miles Id keep the Cup depeciation is the real killer to cars MPG etc only matter for huge milage cars.

If you want the toys how about a 172 Im sure it wont cost much to swop.

Im based at Whitley mate, Virtual Manufacturing engineering apprentice but im currently at Browns Lane pilot plant on the X150 build.

Dont go for the Focus whatever you do, every other car in the car park is one of them things! I do like the mondeo, especially in the imperial blue, really stands out. sure you could chip it easily as well

lol, sort of. its basically trying to build a car on CAD before it is physically made so that some of the problems can be ironed out such as accessability, tooling requirements etc. the departments only a few years old so its still not that effective at the moment

i cant be arsed to sit at a computer all day though, im in the workshop on the more physical side of things.

I changed from a Mondeo 2.5 Zetec S to the Cup... would I go back? Never!!!

The Mondeo was a great car, well put together, stacks of space, very tidy handling for a car that weighs 1,450 kgs.

Downsides for me...

No real "fun"... they have huge grip, thanks to the 225/40/18 tyres, but you have to behave like an imbecile to get it to move about a bit on normal roads, and that for me is where the fun is... playing with it.

Expensive tyres... I get 12k from a set on the Cup and theyre £40-50 each. go price up some 225/40/18, and work on 16-18k at best (heavy engine and lots of torque).

It was a HUGE family car, bigger than I needed... my wife has a Focus, and I wanted a laugh, hence the Cup.

Last downside... getting slaughtered by everything from VTS Saxos to old 1.3 106 Ralleyes... and that was with a V6 (which I think is about an extra 15-20 bhp over the diesel?).

Id say go for it if you really need the space, but if not, I reckon after 5-10,000 miles youll be wishing you hadnt.

It wont work ever. CAD is useless the real world the real world isnt computer generated. I work with some of the best and expensive stuff on the planet and it still doesnt fix development problems.

I saw an advert for the sttdci recently for around 16k standard price! so 16k with ur dicsount aint that hot!

Nice enough cars but Im not sure about the cool image and at the end of the day depreciation is gonna be a muther!!

Ive gone from a vectra GSI to a cup. I miss the space and the nice drive. But i wouldnt go back. 16MPG is horrid, and parking wasnt easy in busy car parks or on roadsides. The cup is miles better to drive cos you have to drive it. Big cars drive themselves, which seems nice for about 500 miles then you miss the hot hatch buzz.

As already stated, its about whether you need all the space. Obviously a personal issue also. But for me i went hot hatch to big saloon which was a decent speed car, but ended up with a hot hatch a year later cos you cant beat em.

Yeah but the Gsi is 30bhp more standard, and this was modded. Most of it driving round town and short journeys, did high 20s on the motorway
