Little kick at 5,000rpm

  Remapped derv Golf

Both myself and my cousin (JONGSR4) have cups

Mine is standard and his is mostly standard except for a Viper i/k. At least we dont think its chipped.

His has done about 15000 more miles than mine. Clutch as soooo different!

Thing is his has a little sort of kick at 5000rpm (almost like a vtec but not as long). On mine it just isnt there! The car just goes smoothly though the range to the limiter (with the normal on cam feel) but theres no kick.

Frosty has an R spec chip and although his does seem to have more kick than mine it isnt as sharp as Jons.

Anyone else noticed this?

Mine definatley has a kick at 5K ish...4th gear coming on cam feels great..like a very small turbo hehe

thing is, its only really noticable in 2nd, lovely kick though! great fun! feels like honda vtec!

my valver was like that mate, seemed to be smooth the whole way through rather than really going at 4.5k even though there was a noticeable difference in sound. perhaps it was just where id got used to it.like it was there but i just took it for granted

Talking of VTECs, i went to a Jap RR today. they had a Teg type R there that was possibly the nicest sounding car ive ever heard. the noise as the VTEC kicked in was something else

it was my old car. The person who owned it before had a mate who used to race his on the track. He also was very good at tuning clios!! I always wondered if anything else was done to it coz it was a quick cup. Had a few 172s before but this is the quickest i have owned

yup, mine too.

everyone will prob say its the V.V.T but that actually kicks in about 1900rpm?cant remember, Rich Tea knows - hes geeky like that ;)

My 172 does that aswell, after the 4k surge it goes again at about 5k feels cool

Mine does that, cant really notice it in first but in most of the other gears, maybe 5th gear its not so prevelant. But 2nd 3rd are real sweet.

I noticed the kick for about a week now its just part of the expirience. Love the torque steer now who doesnt. My cup has character but beauty is in the eye of the beerholder.

Very true, I noticed it for a while once I started giving the car some stick, but now I almost used to it and expect it to happen, rather than being surprised by it! However it still makes me smile everytime!

Very noticeable in 1st (although the engine races round the revs so quickly it all happens in the blink of a second!) , 2nd and 3rd gears, in 4th and 5th it almost feels as though the engine has suddenly been freed up.... like the engine is saying...."Hmmmm go on then lets go for it!!"

The "kick" is just the engine coming on cam, not the VVT and on some cars it will be more pronounced than others, as all engines vary!

my 172s done 40k

and at about 5k it does it in 1st then 2nd

havnt had it all that long to have notices in other gears but its like going quick then all of a sudden that last 2k odd revs fly up :D

But Rich the kick is like your Honda hitting 6k ;). Ill take a video of it next time Im with Jon and post it up.

Its like a VTEC kick. Mine goes to five and then finds a second wind, but Jons is almost a shove in the back at 5k. Its bloody brill!

LOL

Nah, it aint no VTEC and you know it! ;)

My Cup had a good old shove at 5k but my mates mk1 172 is a real change, it comes on really strong but is a bit flat below this, wheras my Cup was really strong low down so more of a noticable change on his.

The VTEC kick on the newer cars aint as strong as on the older ones either, so its not as on/off on a CTR as it was on say a Teg (DC2) although it still does bring a smile to the face!

Ok ok, its no VTEC system, so Ill call Jons VVT+ instead. ;)

How are you getting on with the R anyway mate?

the dc5 teg still has a sick vtec kick

my mate recons his is such an improvment over his ctr

It is most entertaining.

The noises it makes are awesome and I luuurve the VTEC, revs like crazy and that gearbox is superb! :D

Faster than my Cup in a straightline though, and much stronger at speed, but off the mark theres nowt in it.

Pleased to hear youre getting on well with it.

Have you had any problems? In my experience the modern (and not so modern) Jap motors are almost bullet-proof.

It was 2 years old this week, I got it off my mate so know its full history and the only problem its even had was a minor oil leak caused by a dealer fitting an oil filter badly at the first service!

Amazingly reliable and only wish my Cup had been like this or Id still have it...

Had a little play today.....

The kick is there but its knowhere near as big as Jons. Although the car doesnt seem to perform any differently.

Both mine and Jons feel slower than Frostys with the R Spec chip.

Hopefully Jons meaty brakes might help stop him sooner though

Its because of the Viper IK. I had a panel filter, no kick at 5000. I have a IK now (fitted 2 days ago) and the 1st time I drove the car after installing the IK that 5000rpm kick took me by surprise :) Feels quite powerfull but only really noticeable in 2nd. NO WAY its similar with the car coming on cams before the IK. Back then it was more like a... push at 5000. Nows a kick :)

Problem is that I find the car less reponsive at low revs than with the Green panel filter I had. And I dont like this. Over 5000 however, it really seems to pull stronger... :)
