update for today...
... went to town on the tar patches/sound deadening in the back of the car. 5 of them in total. 3 on the boot floor, and one on either side of the chassis.
bought myself a heat gun, wallpaper scraper and some white spirit. this is the heat gun i bought:

first off, i heated the tar patches in sections with the heat gun and then attacked them with the scraper. works a treat and got all the tar off within about half an hour. result.
then it was time to get the glue off. it came off fairly easy with a bit of elbow grease on the one's on the boot floor. just took an old rag and a helping of white spirit and the glue dissapeared. but the one's on the chassis were a right pain in the arse! absolutley tonnes of glue and the one side took me forever to get off! got there eventually though, and here's some finished pics.
I also had a quick look at the air filter I have in at the moment (ITG) to make sure it was ok and no dirt or debris in the air box. All was fine with that - but i dropped the front airbox screw down the front of the bay. I think it's just fell somewhere near the front panel. Took it for a quick drive around our car park at the flats, and then followed the route round I took to see if it's dislodged itself and fell out, but I couldn't see it. I'm sure it will fall out whilst driving - hope it's not too serious
Also, thanks to Trev_m I've bought some mirror caps, that I'll have resprayed at the same time as when I send the track wheels to get properly refurbished in orange at some point over the winter!
