MK 1 Power steering pump

HI,

Im getting some not very nice noiss from the front of the car when turning corners or even just going round a tight rounderbout. But it doesnt do it whilst stood at a stand still, its an odd noise somewhere between a squeel and a grating sound so im presuming its the steering pump which is run off a pully.

just wondering what sort of price im looking at from getting it done at a garage???? or if anyone is local to be ill be happy to pay them to do it?

Rather than the power steering pump have you thought it could be a wheel bearing?

Does it make the noise if you are still and move the steering?

not thought of a wheel bearing!!!!!!

if im still and move the wheel ...no it doesnt make the noise

Does it only happen when you turn one way, for instance left or right at a junction?

If it doesnt make the noises when you are still then i doubt its the pump, likely to be a wheel bearing perhaps.
Jack the car up on front at 1 side and hold the wheel at 6 o'clock. Try and rock the wheel back and forward towards the engine bay if you know what i mean, there should be no play whatsoever, then turn the wheel a 1/4 turn and try it again, there should still be no play. Try this on both front wheels and see what results you get.

right i checked the bearings like patrick said..... im no mechanic but i think i felt a bit and i mean the very smallest of play in them,

Did one have more play than the other?

it doesn take very much play at all to cause a noise on turning! Yous sure you were doing it right? As said above, did one side have more play then another?

im sure i did it right, one hand at 12 o`clock the other at 6 the tried to rock it then spin the wheel round and do the same.

yeh i think 1 was a bit more than the other but like i said im not too sure.

so why does the noise only happen when i turn????? surly if the bearing was bad id hear it whilst going forward?

No, it only happens when turning as all the cars weight are on the bearing.
