mk1 F4R conversion performance (vids inc)

wasnt sure whether to put this in here or in media, but im more after the mechanical side of it than pimping a video!

did a few speed runs tonight with some videos

tbh, its s**t :(

very very slow for what it is imo. it doesnt like 3rd at all.

my downpipe is not sealed at all and is blowing like a mofo - hence why it sounds like i have no exhaust on at all (not even a manifold)

is an exhaust likely to kill it that much? or have i wasted 6 months on a conversion? :?

also running on 95 ron, no vpower for miles - does that affect it at all?

also, im getting a fair bit of blue smoke (so oil) on over run... piston rings?! the engine is supposedly new! - i have a decat + straight through, but even my 117k valver lump was no where near as bad!!

exhuast will make hell of a difference to how it runs, sensors etc.

wasnt there someone that had their 172 ph1 running fine but the cambelt was a tooth out causing it to be like 140bhp?

They run very well on the 95 muck actually.

What's induction like? although that shouldnt make too much difference. It's fast but your right it doesent look faster than my 172 Ph2 and it proper should be.

what's up with the clutch in the first vid. sounds like your lettin it slip a little bud ;)

I don't think the exhaust will make too much difference, as long as the lambda sensor is ok.
Can you feel it blowing excessively out of the oil filler cap on tickover? (rings)

i'll try the filler cap thing tomorrow

the clutch slip is my fault - i've converted to the 172 'soft clutch' and I trimmed the pedal stop a bit too much, so the bite is really high and its throwing me off

induction is a standard airbox and filter + with the airfeed pipes missing, but it shouldnt affect it that much.

mini-valver

My VTS would eat that, lol. ;)

The gearing is short too so somethings up somewhere dude....

im *fairly* sure the cambelt is fitted right... would the correct way to check be to lock the crank at TDC and check the alignment of the cams?

it seemed fine when i had it out - did it by the book

yeah, or just line up the mark on the flywheel with the timing marks on the gearbox and try to slot the tool into the cams. No harm putting the lock pin in too. Remember when tightening the bottom pulley that you need to hold the flywheel (screwdriver or small prybar in the teeth) and not just rely on the lock pin (it will bend). My prefered method is to just do 1st stage tightening on the bottom pulley so it can't move, then release all the lock tools before doing angle tightening on the bottom pulley with the flywheel locked. Gives spot on results.

95 ron won't make any difference really, they run fine on it as said. Get the exhaust sorted then have another go, if still really bad then maybe start worrying :p

Could it be anything to do with the diesel box?

  '92 172, Lotus Elise
diesel box has sensible 1-3 ratios - 3rd is 100mph

coupled with a light car, it shouldnt cause any issues :D

as for the blowing out the oil filler hole, i had a feel today (oo err) and there was a *slight* breeze if u held ur hand directly over it - is that normal?

I'll be at FCS and i think c16v are right next to CS, anyone fancy coming over and checking for me?

K363 LMG :D - blue with white wheels

Yes the exhaust can/will make that much difference especially if its blowing badly early on in the system and there will be nigh on zero back pressure which won't be helping.

Can't say I ever remember my 172 blowing out the filler cap, does it compression test fine when cold and then warm?
