Mk2 172 exhaust - how many sections

My mk2 172 has had the mid section of the exhaust changed to cure the 4k rattle, however it is now blowing from a joint which is located on the hump going over the rear axle. I was always under the impression that the 172 exhaust was one piece from behind the cat to the tailpipe? if so it looks like they have cut the old one of above the hump and then cut a new one to match and put a dodgy connector to join the two bits. I can see why they would do this as it is quicker and easier to fit, rather than having to drop the rear axle, but unfortunately I have one problem fixed replaced by another problem!

Chris.

not sure but at work on the current 3 series from factory the exhaust is 1 peice from the manifold but the only replacements available from bmw are in 2 sections the front half including the cat and mid silencer and then a rear section with just the back silencer, when replacing either of these they cut the pipe between and use a clamp/sleeve unit rather than welding. its possible this is how renault provide replacement sections

Definately 1 piece......mines in the attic too and in 1 piece!!!!! Had to drop the rear beam down to remove it tho

Mine had exactly the same problem!!! Blowing just over the rear axel and now after three months its blowing somewhere else!!

yeah, 172 looney is spot on. It come form the factory as a one piece from the factory, however, in the build process thr rear axles and compenents are on put onto the chasis after the exhaust, so to enble the changing of the centre section the replacement parts only come in two sections, not one as the original.

OK, Im happy now that just changing the mid section is normal, but surely ic cant be too hard to connect the 2 sections with a sleeve that doesnt leak.

Also the exhaust is popping a bit at idle, is this also a result of the exhaust blowing?

My exhaust pops a bit at idle... I think its just cause of the mild (less than wild, but more than normal) cams..

Mine pops a little, am still having problems with my exhaust and had a new cat as well, in my opinion the system hasnt joined together well, had to have mine resealed at the join, seems to vibrate a lot at low revs when pulling off and also the dreaded 4k rattle is still there, so back to renault tomorrow for them to sort it as they didnt sort it on Mon.

The mid section on mine is pants! The flange is not straight, so it doesnt mate up to the cat, right. There is paste around the joint now but thats crap, it has been re-sealed once and re-pasted by Ren. three times! Now it has been said that the part needs replacing. Just what I told them ages ago, when the car was in the 1st years warranty. Now the warranty has run out (exhaust only covered for 1st year?!) it will cost £180 to put right...

New part = cut in exhaust.

back to square 1

Performance exhaust, life time guarantee(sp?) and no 4K buzz...

If they have replace that part then it will be covered for 1yr from that point, I think after the first yr it is 20% contribution, mine has got sh**t loads of paste round the join as well. Bad workmenship in my book.

bottom line is that exhaust paste is a bodge, normally you should only need it if either the exhaust you are fitting is a poor fit or you just havnt aligned it properly, out of all the exhausts ive fitted in the past all have sealed perfectly with whatever gaskets the system uses with no blowing (behave) whatsoever the only time i ever used exhaust paste was on a sh*te very cheap factor exhaust that cost next to nothing that i fitted on a mates 15 year old astra
