Mondial 172 Cup Project

Some of you may know that I purchased a 172 Cup from @MrBlonde some time ago. It was a really well looked after example as can be seen from his previous build thread and well used as they should be.

Unfortunately just after it had rust repairs on both rear quarter panels and paint the offside of the car kissed an armco barrier one morning on his way to work. A lot of the uprated parts were transferred to his new car and it sat on axle stands ready to be broken. I was interested in a few parts for my track car, but enquired about buying the car completed and breaking it myself. Steve offered it to me complete and I arranged to turn up with some wheels and brake bleeding kit to get the car suitable to drive home.

This is how I picked it up from steve. I went to collect with another forum member @Somnambulist. Bled the brakes, fitted the wheels from my track car and drove it home. I was really impressed with how it drove and how tight it felt. No knocks or bangs, just drove how a Cup should. With the Engine Dynamics remap it felt very responsive.

Once the car was home I parked it on the drive and didn't do much more with it. I had purchased a 182FF the previous week to this and this was only suitable for breaking. It did however have some nice bits on it, including a set of Turini wheels with Pirelli tyres. I set about stripping this car bare before turning my attention to the Cup.

With the shell from the 182 gone I started doing a few bits on the Cup. I noticed that it was getting wet inside. The front passenger footwell and boot being the main areas. I re-sealed around the front passenger door card and sucked all the water out with my George. The boot leak was a split in a spot weld, which I have temporarily sealed. The rear offside caliper would not bleed so I replaced this with a good spare I had. Rear interior had all been removed so this has now been refitted. It was on standard springs and looked like a monster truck. Quick wanted thread on this great forum and I had some eibach sportlines courtesy of a forum member @Coops Mk1 arrive and these were promptly fitted. Gave the car a good clean. You can see the rear quarter damage, which is not too bad!

The mot had expired while the car had been sat on the drive. Quick check over and only issues were the hazzard switch not working and washer bottle needed filling up. Everything else seemed to work. Took for mot and went straight through!

I have fitted a stereo with bluetooth and hands free along with a few other small bits. That brings me pretty much up to date.

Tomorrow it is going to have rear quarter panel repaired, bumper and then paint blended into front N/S door. The Turinis will be fully refurbished over next couple of weeks. After that I will get the cambelt and dephaser changed as due on age. Not too worried about this as it's a well serviced car and being a cup does not have the stupid aux belt set up the sports have. I am having a few little bits painted along with what needs too be done. Will update once it's back. Not too sure what the long term plan is. I did originally consider breaking it, but it's far too good and mechanically spot on.

seeing this and the damage and knowing how much time and money had gone into the car it just seems strange mrblonde didn't get it repaired himself and went and bought another car. doesn't look bad at all. glad you saved it

I am sure he will be along to comment, but I think he just fell out of love with it when the damage happened. He had not long had rust removed on the lower part of both rear quarter panels and new paint down both sides.

I am really pleased with it. Drives very well. Should hopefully be ready to collect Friday after dropping it off this morning. I need to then get wheels dropped off for refurb and couple of new tyres. Should be back to its former glory in no time. I will be keeping it fairly standard and OEM. Plan is to just tidy a few bits up.

You just can't help yourself can you

Mark, where do you get your wheels done? I have some lacquer peel on pretty much every wheel that I need to get sorted and whilst it's off the road I thought I might as well get a full refurb.

Collected today and very happy with the repair. Waiting on a couple of trim bits which I will collect in the week. Needs a real good clean now and will get wheels dropped off for refurb this week. It is filthy! I will update with better pictures once I get five minutes to work on it. Anyway sneak preview......

Got an offer through yesterday on Avon or Michelin tyres from black circles. Ordered four 195/45/16 Avon ZV7 and they arrived this morning. Will be going with the Turinis at end of week to be refurbished in bright sparkling silver. Had the tyres on my V6 Audi A3 and more than adequate for road use.

Waiting for the painter to drop the trim bits off one evening this week. The door strips have been painted same colour as the car, rather than the standard matt blue colour. Looks so much better. Once the wheels are fitted next week car will be looking really tidy again. Mondial looks stunning in the sunlight.

I did paint the side strips the same colour as the car 🤔

Good point! And they were good, but as I was having the quarter panel and door done I had them painted again for an exact colour match! I had some done for the track car too, which were matt.

Picked up the final bits from the painter. Just waiting for payday and then time for wheel refurb. I may of made quite a significant purchase this weekend, final decision to be made tomorrow. If so this will be finished and up for sale very soon!

What brake ducts are fitted please? I like the way they sit almost flush like they are formed into the plastic

Don't know how I missed this, kudos for saving it 👍. It was a pleasure to follow around Wales last year and looked great in the sun. I was gutted when Steve told us he'd had a bump in it but it looks spot on again now.

Been a bit delayed in getting the wheels done, but will be dropped off this week and collected next. Got a good pair of original Cup headlights and fog lights that will be fitted this weekend along with Skoda splitter.

The rear door strip is now fitted. Almost there with it. I will get some proper pics up when the wheels are on.

Picked up the wheels on Thursday and they have done a fantastic job as usual. Company called inspraytion in Medway. Real nice blokes that run the company and they have done loads of wheels for me over the years. Anyway some pictures

I had taken the diamonds out of the centre caps so they could be painted too. Quick wipe over of the diamonds with autosol and then pushed back into the caps.

While all the wheels and bumper were off I took the opportunity to clean arches and slam panel area. I have fitted correct Cup headlights(non-xenon).

Last night I fitted an excellent condition pair of fog lights. I had a spare skoda splitter in my spares so fitted that too, which finishes the front off nicely.

Well full genuine cambelt kit, dephaser pulley and aux belt fitted along with genuine oil and filter change by my local Renault specialist and top bloke @renotech
Car runs lovely and exactly how a Cup should drive.

I have fitted a standard exhaust system and rear bumper. Both in good condition. Inside all cleaned and in excellent original condition. I have fitted a non sticky standard Renault stereo and a new control stalk as the old one had a broken clip. The interior is a great place to be. I much prefer standard Cup seats over the sport ones.

I did all the work to this car with the intention of keeping it as my road car. However I have unexpectedly ended up purchasing a 182FF inferno with full ED turbo conversion and a few other mods. I will start a seperate thread for this. I have already completed a fair amount of work on this, while deciding if I was going to purchase it from a friend of mine.

The Cup is now up for sale in the for sale section for £2,995.

Couple of pictures of the Cup and one of the inferno 😁

Oh man. If I didn't need an estate for the new dog, I'd be all over that. A decent cup with a lot of work and recent cambelt for under £3k

And sold to the first person able to view around my hectic and unpredictable work shifts! Real easy and pleasant transaction. Turned up when arranged, test drove, chatted about cars, paid and drove away.

I had been driving the car to work and back all week. Still cannot believe how well it drove. I went through the mountain of receipts in the week too and so many parts had been replaced, which kind of explained how well it drove with the mileage. Only slight annoying issue was the center part of the exhaust system started blowing during the week so I got a brand new one and fitted it last night prior to the car being collected. There is something really nice about a standard Clio Cup, I might regret selling this one.

I have pointed the new owner in the direction of Cliosport and @MrBlonde build thread to show how well the car has been cared for over the years and credit to him for the way it drove. I reckon it's got another 150k in it. I shall now start a thread for the new(possibly stupid) purchase!!
