Mountain Bike Carrying

  RenaultSport Clio 182
I have an inferno Clio 182 and need a good way to carry my mountain bike. I've looked into it a fair bit and discovered that there are no rails for a roof rack, tow bar mounted bike rack can't be fitted because of the exhausts (and Renault say car isn't homologated for towing - so tow bar is not made for the car) and boot rack will mark/damage the spoiler.

Anybody managed to sort out a good solution?

Thanks in advance and great forum btw!!!

I've always used a boot rack with rubber coated hooks and neoprene (well some spongy stuff that feels like it) on the straps where they tough the body work.

Not sure where it came from - my parents had it for ages then donateed it to me!

Just make sure you wrap the pedals in cloth to stop them scratching! Wheels stick out a bit so you have to be careful, especially on country lanes!

stick the seats down and put them in. i get 2 very big downhill bikes. all our gear and a sub in the back of my valver. i just use a bloody big dust sheet to stop mud going anywhere.

That's what I do at the moment, but having to assemble thru axles every time sucks! I ride a lot!

I had a £40 effort from halfords which fitted my 1.2 The spoiler is ovb a little different but I think it would still fit ok. The holder things had rubber on so wouldn't scratch.

I have a halfords tailgate bike rack. I just put some rubber strips over the top of the spoiler to stop it marking. Works well IMO.

I hate taking the wheels off to put the bike in the car. The disc brakes never seem to line back up perfectly. Plus with a rack you get no mud in your car!

Don't forget, your lights and number plate must not be obstructed in any way by the bike or its carrier. Not a lot of people seem to know that. :nono:

And please don't deposit the whole lot in lane 2 of the M11 like someone else did this weekend.

I just line the back with some sheeting, take the weels off and put it in... Makes me realise just how good hot hatches are. I kept up with an elise yesterday with the bike in the back...

Yep....works all the time

I use my 172 for going to MTB races and am a bit paranoid about the interior getting f**ked so always put the seats down (removing rear headrests helps) and cover the whole back area with a large blanket.

An average size xC MTB fits easily with the wheels off and all the associated crap goes in okay as well.

Bike bags are worth thinking about if your putting the bike in the car on a regular basis.

I may just remove all the rear seats completely for the summer...they come out really easily with no bolts etc to undo.....save a bit of weight as well:D
