My 1.2 16v clio expression will not start

  2002 renault clio
I have replaced the starter motor as all the previous one did was push out and not spin, the old starter motor had this horrible grinding noises so I assumed it had gone. I've got the new one in and its the same story, clicks out however does not spin, I've checked all the fuses and I can't see any that looks damaged and the battery is reading 12.5V. I've heard someone mention a main fuse however im not sure as to where I would find it with Google only showing me new fuse boxes. The battery light and STOP light do not illuminate anymore like they used to so im not sure if that has anything to do with it. Any help will be greatly appreciated

I'm guessing yours is a Clio 3. There is a main fuse to act as an anti-surge device when the starter is in use, details here

The obvious answer is to eliminate bit by bit, starting with the earthing all the way round. If the starter motor clicks it must be getting power - or is it the solenoid that is clicking? Again check earths. Best of luck.

Having said that, there was a well known problem with Skoda Fabias; if the brake light switch failed it would have odd problems elsewhere, the common one would be that the engine management light would illuminate, but no codes. Probably not your problem, but worth checking as you mention the brake lights.

Just the solenoid, the gear pings out when the key is in position 3 to start up and pings back in again when the key is returned to position 2 or the ignition on position
