My 182 Track Car Project

  Clio 182
Just read through the complete thread and your car is awesome. How do you find running 195/50/16? Contemplating wether to run 15's or 16's on my track car but worried about rubbing with the 16's?

Thank you very much :)
To be honest I only use the 16s for the road I feel the car drives better on them for road use but 1000000% 15”s for the track I get no rubbing with my 15s however the 16s rub the arches and it’s really off putting hearing that. Plus the tyres are cheaper and easier to get hold of for the 15s

Springs have turned up today for the edc also new oe brakes pads for it plus spreader plates for the 182 to adjust the lap harnesses as they need better placement.

without going through your whole thread, what wheels do you recommend for track?
I run team dynamics pro race 1.2s 15” they are pretty light and not that expensive to buy and I think suit the car nicely plus at 15” the tyres are much cheaper

That’s the 200 edc sold it went on Friday afternoon so that now means the 182 is now the daily driver for a while until I find a new daily not sure what to get next.
I have booked with a few mates to go to the Nurburgring again this year (July) we are doing tourist sessions this year first time in many years we have done that.
More updates on both cars to come

Awesome car and thread - when are you there in July? I'm over on 14th-15th July with Spa on the 17th.
Although my 182 has just been bought and will be pretty standard... for now. Your thread has my head going!!

Thank you very much I am pretty happy how it’s come out but there’s always room for more mods :)
We are there from the 18th-24th July. So we will just miss each other.
Haha how far are you thinking of going with your car ?
Well if you need any help or advise I will try my best to help

Damn! That’s a shame, would’ve been good to see it in person. I’ve done 10 years of passenger rides on the Ring, yet never driven it. So figured I’d buy the 182 for that and Spa.
If I get the bug again, I was actually thinking of doing a 197 build - let’s see!

You never know we might pass each other on the motorway lol
I bet you can not wait it’s such a great track to drive you will love it. The only down side is you will get addicted to driving it every year haha
You can not go wrong with any of them 197 would be a good one :)

Bit of an update and many things have happened since my last update.
The 200 edc has gone I loved the car it did cause me a head ache from time to time but me and the good lady were buying a house so I decided to sell it.

We got the keys in August and before anything went in the house I made sure the 182 fitted in the garage haha which it did so I now have my own little area the car can live. A garage picture before and after

Before

After

Managed to get my work bench in as well just working out how to store my spare wheels, the floor looks much cleaner now I have moped it. There’s enough space for the car and space to work on it so I can work in the dry also the cup racer just fits as well.

I am currently saving for a new daily at the minute I am thinking another 182 to go along side the track car and try and make it a super clean ultimate daily 182.

Germany was extremely hot and no air con was interesting lol had to use the towel to try and cool the inside of the car. We ended up walking 44 miles on this trip. We were not on a track day this year we just did a few tourist laps

I have got my monies worth out of my front tyres on the green wheels it hasn’t helped my abs wasn’t worked since finishing the car however that’s fixed now turned out just to be a wire had come loose haha.

My friend has a Radical and amazingly the front tyres are the same size as the Clio so he very kindly offered me his used front slicks he doesn’t use anymore for free so I thought why not give them a go. Interesting going to slicks, the first time I tried them on my car it was the wrong conditions it was very cold and really struggled to get heat into them, the next Bedford track day was warmer and they performed loads better must admit I preferred the feel of the AO48s but to be fair the cars not fully set up for slicks so I would imagine I am not getting the full potential out of them but they were free so I can not complain but good to try.

Both cars are away for the winter now getting ready for next year the plan is

Green car-
Cam belt
Tidy inside up finish a few bits and bobs
Maybe a new short shifter see on funds
Maybe new front wheel (15”)
Headlight refresh and film on them
Learn how to wrap maybe the bumper or rear quarter

Orange car-
Gearbox out and to be sent off for inspection
New passenger seat
New passenger seat belts
Clean and inspect
And new front wing as dad put the semi slicks through it haha

Future plans for the cars-
Green car-
Maybe an LSD diff
AST would be a dream
Play with aero more for looks than anything

Orange one-
Dad joked at 400 bhp I will try and work on him lol be cool for it to have throttle bodies instead of 400 bhp though
More wheels dad loves buying wheels
Maybe a cup racer exhaust because I like the flames they make and for it to be complete with all cup racer parts (that’s the only thing missing)

And this is how the green car is now

I will update more as and when we do the jobs on the lists.

Also I am on instagram if you wanted to follow me always happy to have more Clio related stuff on my instagram. cl10.ben

Green car needs a diffffff. Surprised you haven’t done that yet
Haha I agree mate I am trying to save the pennies to get one hopefully this year I can. I spend all my money on green parts lol

I need to go out in one that has one fitted to see the difference.

Snett 300 is our first race. Bedford is local to Charlie who looks after the car but always have trouble with noise there.

New harnesses for the car this year I have upgraded to 6 point and 2” into 3” belts to work better with the HANS device.

This is the car currently I have got the inlet manifold off so it can be smoothed and matched to the lower manifold (separate post for that because me and a guy from work have done it so plenty of pictures)
Headlights are out to be polished and freshened up. Some more updates to come :)

So me and the guy from work (Neal) have had a play with the inlets smoothing them and matching them (Neal ports heads for classic minis and is one of the best in the business his name is Neal GT on Facebook go check him out if you are into your classic mini stuff or if you want a mini cylinder head doing).
Anyway this is how the inlets started
21CE5BB9-8373-4DC6-95CB-DA7589385D2C.jpeg

It has a pretty rough casting finishing but not terrible for a factory inlet and it has the RS lower inlet I might add.
We started with 80 grit (that they use on flatting blocks) on a drill, we made from threaded bar a holder for the 80 grit to wrap round and we just cut a slot in the middle of the bar and the 80 grit folded up sits in there lovely.
Made a start with the 80 and gave a finish like this
44415015-B362-4277-AE49-185DB867A1D8.jpeg

We left the matching side of the job till the end as we didn’t want to open the port too much when smoothing (left has been done right factory)
Continue to work with the 80 grit we found 80 grit DA disks work really well to shift the larger amounts of metal.
00799848-DC79-493A-87F4-39CCB222C660.jpeg

Worked the rest of the ports and came out with this.
7D1D6A10-214E-40AF-A2D7-4F4FCC60F48E.jpeg

We then went back to the 80 grit block stuff (I will get pictures of the paper and grit when I get to work Monday so you know what I am talking about) this works really well before you use the 240 grit as it isn’t as aggressive
So it then looked like this

Top part next

Same process with the top part of the manifold
EBB68840-E9C1-49F9-959C-32BED0D40E04.jpeg

Smoothing and shaping all the time and started to use the gasket as a reference
Got rid of this step with a dremel and a stone but nothing too aggressive and then smoothed with the 80 grit once gone
24A04E1C-CCFC-4F14-8741-90CD6D6B2919.jpeg

After with the 80 grit
5BA7FAC7-5345-41C8-9178-DB1EF6806925.jpeg

Then matched everything to the gaskets and once done used a needle file to round the edges off and then finished with the 240 everywhere and job done took us about 6 hours to do on and off here’s some pictures of the finished job

Took the cup racer to work to take the gearbox out and have it inspected and freshen up.
1408616

Car ended up needing new diff plates, new clutch and pressure plate and new seals all round apart from that the gearbox was like brand new inside. Work was carried out by Jade Developments in Barwell.
Here’s some pictures of the box stripped and a few other pictures.

When the box was sripped there was some strange yellow grease all over everything which didn’t help the diff plates but all sorted and cleaned now.

  Clio 220 PH2
Like I say the car had a new clutch and pressure plate it looks lovely shame you won’t be able to see it haha
1408624
1408625

And one picture of the freshly rebuilt box
1408626

The car is all back together just needs a brake fluid flush and also new front brake pads

  Clio 220 PH2
The new harnesses are in on the drivers side they look wicked and very light (for the cup racer) we tried to fit the new passenger seat but pie in the face moment it doesn’t fit it’s too wide for the car so a standard size one will be ordered soon but we shall stick with the OMP one for now.
1408627

These harnesses are loads better and easier to adjust thanks to the yellow pull toggles.

Just going back to the brake pads they have arrived and we have got ds1.11 and some new fluid and we ordered them via @George@RTR_Parts i would just like to say what an amazing service they provide, George was very very helpful and got the parts shipped out to me next day if you are looking for brake stuff look nowhere else we certainly will be ordering all our stuff through him from now on. Top work mate thank you very much.

We are hopefully taking either the 182 or cup racer to donington on the 22nd March if anyone will be there ?

More updates soon :)
