my mk1 cup racer blog (updates page 29)

Re: My mk1 track car blog

Wahey, so at the new rate it should be done about the same time as petrol runs out ;)

cheeky!

but quite true :dapprove:

i'm trying, honest.

i felt a bit guilty for not updating for a while, so i did a bit of work last night on the carbon fibre gauge panel, all ready to go in the car and be wired in, then i can put my oil filter back on and fire it up for the first time in about 4 months!!

*btw i will be removing the coil pack plug and cranking the car over to make sure i have oil pressure (after fitting oil cooler) before firing it up properly* (handy little tip for anyone working on the oill system ;))

started off by cutting the original gauge holder
Photo0108.jpg

then cut a piece of cf to the correct size
Photo0109.jpg

Photo0110.jpg

then with my new hole cutting drill extension thingy attached.....
Photo0112.jpg

i thought to myself 'jesus christ that looks a bit savage for cutting cf, more chance of it cutting through my bloody leg!', so i tested it on a piece of scrap
Photo0114.jpg

and then did it on the real thing
Photo0115.jpg

Photo0116.jpg

and with the gauges in place

bingo bango!

more updates soon (yeh right! maybe another few months lol)

Re: My mk1 track car blog

Wow just read this thread from start to page 27 :)

Some serious dedication go into this project top stuff

Liking the doorcards a lot thinking some will be heading onto my *cough* 205

Also if you can let me know how to get the GF to want to help with "car stuff" like you have done that would be the best xmas present :S haha

Re: My mk1 track car blog

absolutely awesome, my mates looking at doing a conversion- i'm going to show him this as a benchmark!

Re: My mk1 track car blog

lol cheers guys, it amazes me sometimes how much work i have done when i look back to the start of this thread

jamie - dunno mate, she just likes cars and likes to help out now and again, her dream car is an escort cosworth (not the usual ferrari etc etc you might expect). i have even managed to teach her about certain mechanical things, like the difference between a turbo and a supercharger, how to tell the difference between engine oil and gearbox oil (ie one makes you retch lol), what a sequential gearbox does and what heel toeing is and how it helps. not bad eh? ;)

Darmon - cheers for the kind words but if its a benchmark for quality of work you want, never mind my project, show your mate beaniemoo's thread. makes me look like a chimp with a spanner!:eek:

Re: My mk1 track car blog

benchmarks are set by the cars on the track lol.

level of work goin into em is all well n good......but its how they perform that really matters imo...keep up the good work tho. ul have to take me for a spin wen its finished. ;)

very true, i have tried to keep it as functional as possible, with the odd bit of glam here and there

and i've seen vids of you on track......... i'll have to work mighty hard to impress you! but i will try :approve:

Re: My mk1 track car blog

Good stuff! Took me long enough to explain to mine not to switch the car straight off without letting the car idle for a while  (Was a turbo'd Fiat Seicento)

So I take it your hoping to get it on the track for '09 at somepoint ;)

Re: My mk1 track car blog

what's wrong with the original gauges that give you oil level as well? :(

And by doing so you will fill the cylinders with un burnt fuel.

Id disconnect the crank sensor, that way you'd have no spark or injector pulse.

thats the plan, will have to see how many track days i manage to get done

nothings wrong with them, just couldnt be bothered working out how to wire them up

fuel pump is on a toggle switch inside the car, so that will be ok won't it? car hasn't been started in a few months so there shouldn't be any pressure in the lines still, should there?

Re: My mk1 track car blog

yea stopping the fuel pump will be fine. Even if there is still a little bit of fuel in the rail it wont cause a problem

Re: My mk1 track car blog

i tell you what, Quaife engineering don't hang about! ordered a new gear knob at 3pm yesterday and it was delivered at 9am this morning, had to try it

i wasn't overly keen with the feel of the round one that came with the short shift, so went for one from quaife that they supply with their gearbox setups

much better! :approve:

Re: My mk1 track car blog

Nice touch looks like the TRD ones you can get.

Re: My mk1 track car blog

fit the gauges last friday, just need to wire them up (yet more wiring!!)

and then went to sort out my oil cooler setup for the last time only to find i don't have a deep 23mm (i think thats what size it is) socket to tighten up the bolt

so resorted to tidying up the garage instead, boooooring!

Re: My mk1 track car blog

right had a few toys turn up over the past weeks, and a few hand tools that should make my life easier!

ast adjustable solid top mounts turned up today, time will tell if they fit lol (i like trying new things)
lifeline 2000 mechanical fire extinguisher
some 25 and 26mm sockets (these were surprisingly hard to source as i needed both deep and shallow, managed to find a supplier in ireland who had them all in stock, means i can now fit my oil cooler sandwich plate properly)
collected all four valver steel wheels, just need to get the tyres removed so they can be sandblasted, then off for powdercoating (still not sure what colour)

and i have got next week booked off work to get some maintenance done on the pug and to get cracking with the clio, praying its not snowing like it is today :(

i will take pics of next weeks progress

Re: My mk1 track car blog

right managed to get some time on it recently

firstly i bolted up my mocal sandwich plate and second sandwich plate for the oil gauges, wasnt a straight forward job as its pretty tight for space in that area already

Photo0126.jpg

Photo0139.jpg

then wired up the gauges, turned ignition to see if they work, think it might have a bad earth as i dont think its 20 deg or has 10 psi of oil pressure lmao

Photo0136.jpg

Photo0138.jpg

then as some of you may know i took a gamble and got in on the ast top mount group buy, had no idea if they would fit a mk1, curtis didnt see any reason why not although he couldnt tell me 100% as it hadnt been done yet

Photo0124.jpg

safe to say they do fit, 1st mk1 to have them fitted?? 8)

Photo0135.jpg

used my trusty ebay special impact wrench to get the top mounts off

Photo0130.jpg

Photo0127.jpg

removed the coil over and replaced the standard top mount with the ast unit

Photo0128.jpg

Photo0129.jpg

Photo0131.jpg

and they camber they give on maximum setting, yeh baby!!!

Photo0132.jpg

Photo0133.jpg

so there you have it, might not update it weekly, but i think this one is definately worthwhile :D

  F4R'd ITB'd '92 cup racer
Re: My mk1 track car blog

cheers guys, yeh i have been looking for some reasonably priced solid top mounts for a while, these are ideal!

oh and there may be a bit of a change of lifestyle for the clio, but all will be revealed fairly soon :D ;)

Re: My mk1 track car blog

right peeps

despite my best efforts (i can only throw so much money at this shell before calling it a day) i am admitting defeat against the rust :dapprove:

although we have cut out inner and outer sections of the sill and welded in new metal, i'm still not happy with it, and not confident that a) it will pass an MOT without ALOT more work and b) be safe if an accident should happen

soooo its time to remove everything and start again :rasp:

new shell should be here fairly soon, those of you who know what it is, please keep it under your hat for the time being, just until it lands oop north ;)

time for a new project thread? maybe, although i feel bad for this one, but it has taught me alot, there's a fair few mistakes i wont be making on the next one thats for sure

Re: My mk1 track car blog

you would! :rasp:

*if it gets written off on the way up you can buy me a new one!*

Re: My mk1 track car blog

i know, after all the hours i have put in i am gutted to wave goodbye to the shell, but its for the best

new shell MIGHT be arriving on monday, but that all depends on funds clearing and a few other factors
