Car and van washed and fuelled up ready to go. Im working away all week so had to get everything finished today. Awning brackets are fitted just have to bolt the awning casing on on Friday morning before I set off for Rockingham. Anyone dropping by next Saturday to watch give me a shout as I'll have some spare tickets.
See you all at Rockingham.

Excuse the lack of pictures, iphone is on the blink.
Just back from the first race weekend of the season.
Looked like it would be a good weekend, a healthy grid and friday weather was great. However the weather turned on friday night/saturday morning, went cold, extremely windy and we had heavy rain before quali meaning it was lethal on track. Made a late call on tyres for quali so had to rush to get to the assembly area, it had started by the time i got there. To make things worse i didnt have my scrutineering slip with me, they used to stick on the cage but now they dont and id forgot to attach it somewhere, they wouldnt let me out! By the time i'd gone for it there was only a few minutes left so only managed 2 flying laps of wheelspin and hilarious understeer/oversteer and left foot braking! It was so slow it was painful, 20+ seconds slower than a decent dry lap! To my suprise it wasnt just me and everyone was struggling, id managed to bag Tricolore Pole Position, however there was a Hyundai Coupe next to me as the conditions had really shaken things up.
Race 1
Thankfully the weather improved and it dried out totally, it was still massively windy though and not warm in the paddock so i gambled on R888's for race. This it turned out was a mistake as there was plenty of track temp to make the Dunlops work. It did mean i could go harder at the start but after 5 laps or so the tyres were just about past it. I'd led from the start as the Hyundai's arent a problem in the dry but simon got past in the Saxo and i couldnt stay with him. Thats how it finished, Simon 1st, me 2nd and Andy mitchel further back in 3rd in the 205. My fastest lap was a 1.35.5 which was 0.6 off simons best and 0.3 slower than my times from last year!

Race 2
Changed the R888's for the Dirrezzas for raace 2 and a few clicks here and there on the dampers made for a totally different car and it felt really good from the off if a little oversteery. Had the pace to stay with simon for the first couple of laps until there was a safety car, perfect, ready to have a proper go at the saxo on the restart, however i fell asleep i think and massively let him off the hook on the restart and was kicking myself, car still had the pace come the end too with overall fastest lap on lap 9 with a 1.34.7 0.5 seconds faster than last year. Pretty uneventful race but keep an eye out at 7.35 for me hitting the bump on the first banked corner, flat out at an indicated 120mph and it wanted to oversteer, 1/4 turn of oppo and some new trousers required!
Same result as race 1, Simon, me and andy mitchell 1st, 2nd, 3rd.

I saw that moment at 7.35 Russ. Looks like you were higher up the bank than usual and took more of the dip. Well done mate, good result

Good racing Russ. I did enjoy just spectating on Sunday but really wished I was out there with you guys. Should be sorted for Brands though.

Shame about the slow restart after the safety car in race 2, looked like you weren't expecting it to come in so soon. You had the pace as well.

We do need to do some corporate style pictures of the drivers and cars at Brands. If there is a couple of hours in the day, we should all find a place to park up and get Mark to do some really good shots. We would all have to stand like the stig though!

Looks like the engine and box are coming out again then!

Got a fairly substantial oil leak, not sure if it's engine or gearbox yet but gut says its gearbox. Just had a quick look and can't really be sure where it's coming from but looks like between the bell housing so either crankshaft oil seal or gearbox input shaft seal (again!)

So that's where we're at, hopefully get the engine out this weekend and see what's going on. Wasn't planning on doing brands hatch anyway in May so I've got plenty of time to sort it before Mallory in June assuming it's nothing serious.

New input shaft seal fitted + 3/4th gear selector fork. Crack tested the casing too just to eliminate it as a source of leaks. Will be moving away from my tried and tested Silkolene Syn Trans Race gearbox oil as we just seem to be experiencing excessive wear. Gonna stick a new clutch in while its out this time with new flywheel and clutch boots as a matter of course. + a new crankshaft oil seal as well while its in bits.

Will have to wait until after the weekend to do all that and refit as I'm trying to finish a fellow racers new Saxo. Hopefully have it finished this weekend. Full rewire, loom built for DTA s40 all excess wires stripped out, new fuse box etc. I really like the flat arch shell, kinda stealthy!

In other news the sprinter is booked in to be remapped in 2 weeks, it's flat as s pancake being a 311 so is only 109bhp and 200lb/ft good news is all the 2.2cdi sprinter engines are identical like most commercials nowadays so it's effectively a 315 150bhp engine just restricted via the software. The upshot is 180bhp and 285lb/ft once mapped, should be fun as its only geared for 100mph fiat out!

Our next race is Thruxton in 3 weeks after the cancellation of Malory park. Entry has been sent off for that, cadwell, silverstone and Oulton park.

Changing the manifold over is a doodle though and getting 200bhp n/a from them doesnt seem to be any harder than getting it from a Clio.

I love them but they are getting a bit old now....
Only seemed like yesterday that every other car on the road was a VTR now theres hardly any!
