Hi all
Newbie to site and loving all the info available so thought would share my 172 Ph1 progress after getting the car earlier this month
75k from new, registered Sep 2000 so 17 years old, with good history and seems all original apart from some yellow springs that seem to have lowered it.
Needs a good clean and detail

So got some time yesterday and with track day planned for Nov it was time to start some service work

Brake fluid change and think it was original from the colour......... quite nice you can get to the back bleed point with the wheels still on

Then for the new rear box hanger as new unfitted one had come with the car, bolts quite stubborn but all came off in the end, one already had been replaced with nut / bot setup as rear one seems to have snapped off earlier in its life.
Cleaned up and back on with some copper slip then wax coat in a vain attempt to keep them from getting any worse

Car in at the dealer tomorrow for the big one, belts, dephaser, water pump and aux set, assuming all goes well next weekend will be pads and discs and oils

Word of advice, those mounts will fail again soon so it's best to support them with some plastic rod or sockets(bodge)in between the voids in the rubber part. Nice looking car.

Thanks for the tip appreciated l, did wonder about that as the new one once on looked well loaded and pulled down.
Was considering using the old mount I took off to to make a powerflex one as they sell the block that fits in the frame

Can always gob the exhaust mount full of Tiger Seal to create a "solid" one....my brother did this on mine and it worked a treat and never had any issues from it.

Nice, another phase 1 about the place
Yellow springs are usually apex which ride horribly, usually very crashy over bumpy/pot holey roads.

Agreed, I had Apex springs on my first Ph1 and the ride was awful, currently running Eibach springs on my Ph1 now and they are a lot better, Cooksports were good on the cup too but depends what route you want to go down

So it had its belts, water pump and dephaser done on Tuesday, engine for sure a lot quieter so think the dephaser was on its way out

Had some time today so it was engine and gearbox oil change. think the gearbox oil was ready for a change as it came out brown.........
20170930_155517.jpg

Then for a creative and actually very clean fill method
20170930_163639(0).jpg

Into the box

20170930_163645.jpg

Took about 2.8L until it dribbled out of the fill, had car off axle stands and on the flat!
Engine took bang on 4L of oil with a new filter

20170930_161050.jpg

Think new discs next on the list to be ready for bedford trackday on the 13th November

Had some time this morning so attacked the weeping dephaser solenoid seal and replaced

20171007_093943.jpg

Seal was a little tight to get out but refrained from the hammer and screwdriver attack

20171007_095524.jpg

New seal and a 30mm Halfrauds socket as the perfect size drift to knock back in

Lots cleaner now, just how long for LOL

Couple of hours free again today so time for the new rear brake parts and the as new 172 cup rear shocks thanks to @robmuns

Old discs past their best and been on for a while by the looks of it

20171015_113500.jpg

On with the new, gone genuine on the rear as know they get very little loading and hope they will be a little more resistance to corrosion, dealer told me that rear pads are now discontinued but they had a single set left in stock

20171013_162244.jpg

20171013_162253.jpg

Shocks came off easy enough and no jammed bolts....phew. But did note that old no OE shocks when compressed did not spring back up but the new OE cup shocks did??

20171015_115756.jpg

Cleaned, copper slipped and put it all back together, much better

20171015_133219.jpg

20171015_133359.jpg

Brembo HC to be ordered for the front with some new pads, top mounts and gaiters so can be fitted with the as new 172 cup front shocks also from @robmuns

New poly-bushed dog-bone, cup front shocks and some braided lines fitted today, not one seized nut or bolt.... miracles do happen it seems

Old bone out
20180211_095456.jpg

New one greased and ready to go in

20180211_100209.jpg

Made the mistake of doing the brake line first then trying to swap the shocks, pulled the new line about quite a bit but not damaged, lesson learnt and shock first on other side

20180211_104101.jpg

Broom always handy to keep the pedal down when swapping the lines

20180211_101934.jpg

Bled the lines and quick test drive complete, gear shift so much better and pulling off way smoother with the new dog bone, no extra vibration at present well worth the upgrade

So it has a blister or two on the dreaded driver side rear arch at the bottom...... later this year the skirts are coming off along with the internal rear cards to assess the tin worm. Plan on having it fixed whatever I find and am sure some cutting and welding is gonna be needed. Have it as a keeper so don't mind spending a few quid on it as it drives so well

That’s what I like to hear! Not another one for the scrap yard! I’m sure some time in the not so distant future I will be looking for a ph1! I love how the front end looks!

Drives great on the track better than me :) and have good fun chasing down way more expensive stuff, done a couple at Bedford then one in the snow, yes snow at Cadwell earlier this year that was a little too sketchy on the AD08R's that isn't the car rattling or gravel the noise is slush on the track hitting the arches

Then while at the electrics thought would sort the one and high speed heater fan it has, after a call to Renault 172 Ph1 part 7701206104 (Valeo) is now obsolete

Valeo part number is 515136 and still available so one ordered should be here this week, needs a clean in the scuttle!

Noticed my MPG has plummeted / dropped to 12 MPG on a steady run last two trips out and from memory only ever get down to 19 MPG on trackdays. Seems to run okay and no lights so suspect Lambda.

Following forum advice, 22mm ring spanner over the connector, squirt of pen oil and got the exhaust hot and it was out in a matter of mins, upon removal looks like the original bosch one fitted 20 years ago. Only has 1 sensor pre cat fitted and was marked 0258006046 upon removal, seems to be a Bosch LS6064 from searching

New one ordered, will see what happens upon fitting the new one
