Great thread mate..

Im adoring this super yacht. I gather they had a full doubled crew (Master/mate/Officer of the watch etc?)

Did you get any pictures of the bridge?

Looks a great trip. Did you use the 10-22 other than onboard? I was expecting a little more use of the lens instead of closeup/tightcrops.

not quite sure what you mean, but the bridge was a mirror, same equipment on both sides of the room, and there were about 6 or 7 people in there navigating the ship. It was strange, when we came across ice, the captain didn't seem to use any of the equipment, he would use his binoculars and do it all by sight. I was in there when we were navigating an ice field, was very interesting, stayed there for an hour plus i think. i didn't get a pic, but this is it.

yes i did, can't remember all the instances, but when i get near the end, on deception island with the disused whaling station, i used it there! I think theres a time and a place for it, if you take landscapes, its a bit pointless if theres nothing but sky or water or snow at the top or bottom of the picture, as it just fills most of the pic as its so wide. you really need to crop it to a panoramic really. It is a very wide lens though, for interiors, its amazing and in tight spots. When taking pics of penguins though...... think i may have used it for a video where i turn 360 degrees when on the bow of the boat. i'll see if i can find it.

so, where were we?

after the excitement of the ice field enclosing on us, i was on a bit of a high. We started moving to a new location for another landing, and saw this leopard seal sitting on a floating bit of ice, this was my first seal spot, was really hoping i would get to see more, especially as this was a flying visit.

i have no idea what this thing was on the ice, the black blob?

can't remember the name of this bird, but they were everywhere around here, kind of illuminous at night too.

6832815201_b91e3df3bb_b.jpg

now you can start to see the sea getting a bit more choppy, we had entered the Brunsfield straight, another bit of dodgy water, and the boat was starting to rock.

6832842703_0952bbff0a_b.jpg

this was the edge of a glacier, we saw plenty of these.

literally looked like we were crossing the line between bad and good weather here

6832857493_9260104c04_b.jpg

it was a bit of a red herring though, we went to dinner, and now is probably a good time to talk about food.

So, if you've ever been on a cruise, you will know what i'm talking about, but the food is amazing, and theres lots of it. For breakfast we had a massive spread with all the usual suspects, all you can eat. Then at lunch, it was a buffet, a different theme each day and always very nice, the desserts were fabulous too, chocolate mousse! Then the evening meal was usually a choice of about 5 things, and then if you didn't fancy that, there was always a filet steak, so not a bad backup plan! the food was like being in a michelin starred french restaurant every night. We also had the option of room service, 24/7, at no cost. to say the burgers got a hammering from our group is an understatement, apparently they went through 20x what they normally do, they were really shocked, they had to get extra stock off the sister ship when we met up! the burger was nice, i only had 1 or 2 when i didn't feel like having a full restaurant meal.

Anyway, so we went to dinner, and i was sitting in the centre of the boat pretty much, the restaurant spanned the ship at the back, and was a low level, so was just above the water line, with big windows either side. it was a great view if you sat next to the window, amazing even. But this night (well i say night but it was broad daylight), we were happily enjoying the meal when this loud noise could be heard, like we were scraping against something, and then the boat started listing, like so far over that the windows one side of the boat were completely under water, there was crockery smashing all over the place and the waiters looked really worried.......

People shat themselves, thinking were going down, we basically looked at each other and thought, this is it, but what a way to go!!!!

Then the boat righted itself, and that was it, we carried on. The staff wouldn't tell us anything other than it was normal, normal, with all that smashed crockery and glass? Anyway, we were dying to know what went on, and the following night i was on the bridge, and asked the captain what happened and how close we were. He basically said that we were going through an ice field, making progress ;) and he spotted an iceberg and just needed to weave around it, like an animal in the road or something, and we leant over about 5 degrees, 7 max. WHAT, all we experienced was 5 degrees????? So i asked him how far the boat could go before it got into trouble, he said the boat has never been past 10 degrees, even on the really rough crossing they had before, and that the boat could handle 55 degrees (pretty sure it was that figure, it was there a bouts), so we had 5 and it can handle 10x that! we really felt a bit silly then, but at the time, we'd never experienced anything like it, and with the smashing glasses, and the staff looking worried, we really thought it was worse than it was.

So this then happened quite a few times afterwards, but now we knew the score, we actually got to quite enjoy it, like we were now experienced sailors. I personally thought i was going down lol, strange experience!

yes, this trip was, but you can do the same trip on the boat for around the 8k mark i think, maybe less if you get in early, and even less if you go for a different boat, probably get it down to 5k! There were 50 of us from my company, and around 250 on the boat i think, then around 150 staff onboard from memory. It was pretty intimate, as most cruises have several thousand people on them!

It wasn't really a cruise though, i would describe it more like an expedition tbh, what with all the trips on the zodiacs, the gearing up with expedition clothing, and we had an expedition team of about 15 guides who were experts of many years of doing these tours in the antarctic. They said that the boat we were on was the most luxurious they had ever seen in those parts.

Today is December 5th, we are now very used to the routine, but today is slightly different, we have arrived at Enterprise island, but on this trip, we are not doing a landing, this one is a zodiac cruise, which excited me, and scared me at the same time, knowing id have to take all my pics while perching on the side of the zodiac, i also wouldn't be able to move around to get a better shot, so i was relying on the driver to get me in the right place at the right time. Not to mention having to try and take straight pics on a moving boat with that nemesis of mine, the water and land horizon!

Anyway, we were the first boat out, and we headed straight over to the shipwrecked whaling boat in Wilhelmina Bay. It was moored here in 1921 i think and got caught on the rocks, and they had to set fire to it to destroy it, can't remember why, but its pretty eerie.

penguins are my favourite animal i think, they are cute, playful and so friendly. We have seen the nice clean ones so far, but i have some real grubby ones coming up, and i also have something you didn't see on frozen planet, penguin sex!

Straighten the horizon, bring out the clouds a bit more, doesn't seem to be any definition in them, and mildly washed out.

So, we made our way away from Enterprise island to move to Cuverville (i made a mistake on an earlier island with was half moon, so this time it is cuverville), and on the way we were told by the captain there were some minki whales swimming around the ship, so off i go outside to try and get me some whale pictures!

Now, i've taken pictures of a lot of animals, and none have been as difficult to shoot as whales! They appear for a split second, and then go down under water again, to then reappear 50 or 100m away by again popping up for a split second. So as you have the camera at maximum zoom to capture them, you have very little time to point and try and shoot with them in frame for the time they are out of the water. Anyway, i managed to get a few ok ones, nothing i was over impressed with though unfortunately.

so yes, definitely a challenging day, we ahd another day like it too, possibly tomorrow, was port lockroy, but we had to go back another day when it was sunny, and that made a big difference.

Straighten the horizon, bring out the clouds a bit more, doesn't seem to be any definition in them, and mildly washed out.

that any better? i can't really do anything with the clouds as i don't have PS on this laptop, only iPhoto which has limited capabilities.

Looks like a great holiday mate, an experience of a lifetime!

Photographically I can see the killer lens and camera you were using but the pictures seem to lack sharpness to me?

Are you talking about in general, or certain sections?

it was very challenging taking pics as I've mentioned, for starters I was quite often on a boat, a moving object, not easy, seedy, the weather, then it was snowing it proved very difficult to focus properly, and also you had to be quick to not cut the equipment too wet. Then there was the time I has to take pics, our landings would be for around 45 mins, and there was so much to shoot and you had to walk in deep snow to get to all the different parts of the landing etc.

So it was more challenging than going to the zoo, but I've had a look back through all the photos I've posted and I personally don't think that many of them lack definition, a lot of the last section was in heavy snow, so they were really difficult to get exactly in focus.

Maybe im looking through rose tinted glasses though? I've not used the sharpen feature in iPhoto at all.

The majority are fine, a few soft ones but given we can only imagine the conditions you had to contend with they are fantastic overall. The best bit is you seem to have a brilliant, detailed account of the whole trip in photos, but also a good number of absolute gems as well.

I'm personally happy if I come away from a trip with 6-10 frame-worthy shots that I will look back at for many, many years...but I'm useless at shooting a good overview of my trips as well. This set has both, in my opinion.

Really interesting so far! Just out of interest, did you have any issues with the batteries/ camera in the cold?

Ugghh those penguins in the latest lot need a bath! That weather looks really shitty. I think you've taken amazing photos given the weather/conditions etc.

More please.

I took two batteries just in case, but never had any issues, my equipment never failed me really, although I did fail on one occasion.

There were some humpback whales we came across, so grabbed my camera and got some great shots, even got one of the tail coming out of the water, was great. I was on deck in slippers shorts and t-shirt and there were a lot of people watching, and then my md decided it would be hilarious to pull my shorts down as I was shooting. Haha. Very funny. Then he went in, and he told someone else to do it, and they did, that was no amusing! Especially as he was filming it! Then he got another person to do it, and I lost it that time, not funny at all!

anyway, so I go in to check my photos, nothing, no f**king CF card! OMFG, I was so angry! I failed so hard. Damn camera still shows the preview though so I didn't realise.

Love this Diary of your trip, I like to do something like this one day. Sounds like you had the best of both world, being on a cruise, in luxury, eating and drinking in style, then exploring on the ice, and getting face to face with penguins.

had a little play with the iceberg photo in PS, not really done much to it, its a great shot to begin with.

Another version, ive pushed the sky a bit further, this is about the limit to the clouds, as artefacts are starting to appear.

Real shame about missing out on pictures because of no CF card :(

Quite odd though, on my 400D it wont even let me take a picture and flashes up with "NO CF" when looking through the viewfinder! Kinda surprised that yours doesn't or that you didn't notice.
