My Trip to Antarctica

  Clio
Wow, what a trip. That is definetly something that will stay with you for life.

Fantastic read. Did you get to see any of the massive ice crashes into the sea from a glacier? That would have been the ultimate.

And chop chop get some more posted.

Real shame about missing out on pictures because of no CF card :(

Quite odd though, on my 400D it wont even let me take a picture and flashes up with "NO CF" when looking through the viewfinder! Kinda surprised that yours doesn't or that you didn't notice.

Lol, It probably did warn me in the viewfinder, but I was so excited (and angry at the same time being de-bagged! 3times!) I was just concentrating on the whale as it popper up for split seconds. It still takes shots though and they appear on the screen on the back, and out of my peripheral vision I could see them pop up :(

Turn shutter release without card off in the custom function menu mate and it won't happen again!

Yes, saw a couple of those, and an avalanche.

Plus, I think I mentioned a couple of sections ago, when I got stuck in the ice field, as I walked past an ice shelf it collapsed right behind me and had I been a few secs later it would have crushed me.

Not as cold as you would think, in December it is coming into their summer, so it was probably hovering above 0, but ith the wind chill it was colder. I think it's a LOT different in their winter though!

Another version, ive pushed the sky a bit further, this is about the limit to the clouds, as artefacts are starting to appear.

absolutely not, a lot of them are the full resolution, although some are only at large as i had an issue with the uploading. if theres any in particular which aren't original size let me know and i will upload them again.

thanks for reading, I'm not done yet though, some of my favourites are yet to come!

It was more on this page mate and yes it could just be misfocus.

just thought, i think i was still using the 1.4x converter at this point, but it was also by this point i was noticing myself that the shots weren't as sharp from my 70-200, so i stopped using it pretty soon i think.

i thought it might be a dodgy one but the place i hired it from said they had tested it and it was fine, so i won't be using one again, as imo they take something away from the photos, not worth the loss of quality for the extra length, might as well get the quality and crop.

lol, the amount of images in the page (i have 60 posts displayed per page) on page one is really a push for the iPad to handle.

ok, so we start off this session with some midnight photos of icebergs as we travel through the night to our next location, one of the most beautiful on the trip!

so, we have an early morning start, and boy was it worth it, we are now in Paradise Bay, and it certainly lives up to its name, it is so beautiful. The bay is so calm too, the only ripples are the ones we are making in the zodiac. So no landing at this one, its a zodiac cruise, which is great.

And pretty much as soon as we got in there, we come across a minki whale! So we follow it in the zodiac, this was so much fun, following a whale in a dingy. Didn't get any pics unfortunately, I was just enjoying the ride and view on this one! Got my camera out afterwards though as we spotted a crab eater seal on an iceberg! There was some light snow too for this one, but not the driving sleet like the day before. Still needed my plastic raincoat on the lens though.

this is the video of us following the whale, i think we had just spotted it pop up so were making our way over to where it was, we don't get to see it in this vid but it shows how beautifully the calm the water is.

then we spot the crab eater seal as well.

The Blue stuff could be a variety of things, given the Iron 3 on the right though its likely Iron 2 (Iron Sulphate). Could be copper sulphate though, its pretty f**king blue for iron, normally it'd be greener.

My God the photos on the previous page are STUNNING! I think you've been to possibly the most beautiful place on earth..

It's a shame quite a few aren't showing up though, any chance you could repost them?

Also, more please ;)

This trip looks epic. There's no other words to describe it, it looks absolutely beautiful there and the photos you've taken are lovely :)

You've definitely got me wanting to go there now, never even really thought of it before reading this tbh but looks like the trip to the USA the missus wants to do is on hold for now lol :p

Update this thread goddamit!!

Work commitments sorry, been flat out, and currently working in Switzerland for a few days, I will be back on it probably Friday night or Saturday I'd have thought, to do the last few days. Will sort out those ones not appearing too, no idea what that is either as they did appear, so are the right links and are still on Flickr as none have disappeared. Just need to workout which ones they are.

and then this is the first trip to Port Lockroy and meeting up with the sister ship for the first time for their first time. The boats are identical apart from the name, the one i went one was launched last year, the other one (Le Boreal) the year before.

i believe this is the boats 'black' box

This is Port Lockroy, which used to be a UK scientific base, now its a post office, the southern most post office in the world. We were one of the last groups to get over to it as the weather moved in and the captain wanted to move away so we had to abandon island half way through, the pics weren't very good anyway as the weather was so bad. But we got to go back later in the trip and the weather was great. I did get to buy some gifts in the shop though and post some post cards back home (including one to myself). The get picked up by passing ships and dropped off in the falkland isles and then from there go back on rat flights i believe to the uk where they then enter the royal mail system. took about 2 weeks to get back to me. The people who run it are volunteers and spend the summer (the antarctic summer, so our winter) down their, and live how the worked would have when it was a live site, which is basically a hut with no running water or electricity, they have to build a fire every night etc. brutal living really.
