there HAS to be a leak somewhere surely? any1 know if this is common? and where the problem usually is? leaking pipes or a leaking washer bottle?

probably the washer bottle.

take it out, dry it off and fill it up to inspect for leaks.

yeah easy to get out, just getting the wipper arms off thats a pain

Its a fair bet its the rubber grommet in the base of the bottle where the body of pump pushes in. My Sons 172 had the same problem and I replaced the grommet and that fixed it.
Having said that, its not much of a washer bottle, only holds about a Ltr.
