New Build - Thoughts

  Tesla MP3 2021
That pic you just put on the previous page is a pretty sick build lol but he is using a massive res, so it doesn't really go to the top of the loop.

It might be an idea to get posting over at chilled pc as they might be able to give you more ideas as what to do with your loop.

Case is awesome and almost as tall as my daughter

See what I mean now that it does seem a bit bigger than the stacker in person. Even though dimension wise they say that they are similar.

Bloody heavy when they are built up too.

  Turbo'd MX-5 MK4
its taller than the stacker but i think marginally narrower, but much better setup for watercooling ofcourse.

I've ordered a rather special pump & reservoir from America today :) Tygon Tubing as well.

With some of this stuff coming from America it has cost me an awful lot, but the finished product should be good because of it. I've never spent so much on a computer before without actually having bought any real components so far.

good project there, be interested to see how it all develops, braver than me spending all that cash, i'm still rokcing my q6600 & 4870x2- which is going well tbh.

the current system has Q6600 & 8800GTX, perfectly fine, will be OTT for the missus. But we all need our toys :)

Yep - those are still pretty potent cards. Currently on two 4890's in Crossfire myself. Pretty much max anything recent out and it breezes along fine. F1 2010 is something else in the eye-candy stakes - especially in the rain.

Looks a great build this Gareth - make sure you take plenty of pics of the building process!

ordered some more Bitspower fittings today, f**k me these are tearing my cc a new a-hole.

  Turbo'd MX-5 MK4
Some more Bitspower fittings (various) 90s, 45s, extenders, more stops and the Bitspower temperature sensor.

It's difficult to know where to go next without deciding on a colour scheme, I'm keen on getting fans for the radiator to start putting things together. I'm currently looking at getting the Asus Rampage III motherboard & water block for it.

I got some more fittings today, namely 2 more 45s, 1 90 and the Bitspower fillport. Since the last update I've also bought the LG BDRW drive as it came up at a good price that I don't think will be beaten between now and me finishing the system.

I'm hoping to make some progress this weekend by fitting the fillport, but don't fancy having to drill my rather expensive case!

I almost forgot, I've also changed over the molex on the pump for a black one. A small detail I know, but hopefully its the little details like this that'll make the difference.

The new 6850/6870s are starting to appear, the 6970 or 6990 (I'm not quite sure) that I want should be available during December so I'm looking at a finish of December/January hopefully. Although I'm not sure about these new CORE i7 CPUs which are coming out next year.

Intel's Sandy Bridge is looking *very* promising... although it's a bit of a wait and the premium to be one of the early adopters will be fairly hefty I reckon...

  Turbo'd MX-5 MK4
that's what I'm afraid of, it is looking like I'm going to have to delay this further. Money isn't necessarily a problem, the budget for this seems to have been thrown out of the window already tbh. I'm going to crack on with the watercooling setup/testing and see where I am at then.

I was looking at the 6000 series cards. At the moment I just don't think moving to a 6000 series is worth it for me. Already running crossfire 5870's. And you can pick them up for around £250 now. So seems like a bargain way to get high performance computing. Not a single game at the moment I can't play at 1920x1200 with everything maxed out. So probably just skip past this gen and go on to the next one. Might be some games that can push it by then. Also running my 8800GTX for hybrid PhysX.

I do like the fact ATI now had a 3D offering though. Which works on the 5000 series. Was looking at upgrading monitors might have to see about treating myself to a 3D one now.

The numbering scheme of the 6000 is just silly as well. Most people will think the 6870 is the 5870's upgrade. When the 5870 is still the faster card. Until they bring out the 6900 series. Guessing they are going back to the X2 naming as well.

Still unless a single 6900 outperforms both my 5870's won't be upgrading. Likely going to be months before supplies are sorted even when they turn up in December. The 5800 series were utter pigs to get hold of for months after release.

Personally, if I was investing this amount of serious cash, I would wait (easier said than done). Early tests have shown Sandy Bridge to be quite an impressive step-up in performance and capability. I'm not convinced the integrated graphics side of things will be as good but this will not be an issue as you have budgeted and planned for a 'proper' GPU setup anyway. How patient are you?!? LOL! :)

  Turbo'd MX-5 MK4
for this build I'm that patient. I can wait, I want this machine to be right, with the latest tech. It's a little unfortunate that my current GPU is a bit lacking, but to be honest if the 6990s are available there is nothing stopping me from buying one if I have to wait for Sandy Bridge and putting it in my current system for a month or two.

I made some good progress today, I've fitted the Bitspower Fillport. Unfortunately I couldn't use the 90 connector like I'd planned and had to use a 45 due to the 90 fouling the case when trying to fit it, not a biggy just means I can't fit the Blu-Ray drive in the first slot, I might buy a T-Block or the fan controller can go in the first slot instead a bit undecided at the moment, just pleased drilling the fillport hole is over!

Nice one mate... looking forward to seeing the build come together. Be sure to keep us updated with pics, etc. as you have done so far. Cheers!

Can't believe it!! My bloody 8800GTX in my current system has died! Can't decide what to do, any suggestions on a cheap card £100/£150 to keep it going?

  Monaro VXR
Just get a cheap fermi card, use it as a PhysX card when you eventually come to get the 6000 series card for your main build.

  Turbo'd MX-5 MK4
I've opted for a XFX ATI 5770 1GB, should arrive today and hopefully solve the problem! Spent all night last night stripping down, cleaning and rebuilding the whole PC.
