New Motor just bought my first 172, But need some advise

  Clio 172 sport
Hi All,

I am new to the Clio 172 Sport.

Ive Just picked mine up (On the back of a trailer) Its a 53 plate with 115k on the clock with the Dephaser-pulley on its way out.

Ive been trolling throught the net but need some kind of guide how to fit a new one. Do i need a cam and crank locking tool?

I have changed cambelts and water pumpers on other cars by locking the cams with drill bits, Or Mole grips on the camshaft.

Or unless someone is in my area (St Helens) which can give me a hand and can pay them to show me.

Its going to be a ongoing project as it needs other little bits doing like the drivers seat won't fold, the heater blower does not work ect.

As many will tell you, specialist job on these cars, need proper tools. Better off just biting the bullet and getting cambelt and dephaser done by someone who genuinely knows what they are doing. About 500 quid ish inc parts and labour. There are many many threads on this and they will all suggest this approach.

No , its quite possible to do yourself, will save some cash, but you will need the proper tools I think, just done mine with advice from someone on here. Wasn't much fun but now I know what im doing think next time will be easier. Would want huge financial gain to do someone else,s though.

Welcome along

The genuine locking tools that are needed cost around £150.

I certainly wouldn't be improvising with bits to do it, as there are too many tales of woe on here of mistimed engines after belt changes

does anyone have these tools?, If it take the belt off, the cams will move is it a case that with the tool it will time it all correctly for when i put the belt back on?

The tools lock the cams and the crankshaft in the correct position as there are no timing marks. To be honest these could be fabricated. the other essential tool is to lock the pulleys in position, I really think the genuine tool is essential here.

They are the tools to lock crank/cams in position, cannot say if they are ok as I haven't tried them, most recomend genuine Renault tools.
