New Motor / Magnex Exhaust

Hi Guys,

Picked up a new 172 today & am well pleased!! Does anyone know if fitting a magnex really does improve performance or not? Ill probably still get one regardless, but am just interested if it has any effect on BHP or 0-60, although I suspect itll be a miniscule amount of difference.

Yeah right 172...I wish!!! Thats the exact exhaust I plan to get & it really looks the part. Have you had any probs with the heat causing damage to the bumper? I know you can get a bolt effect heat shield from Demon-Tweeks.

The sales guy who also had a 172 recommended not to thrash the motor until I reached 2000 miles. I dont know if I can wait that long, the cars a beast!!! I recall that about 3 years ago my old man bought a MK1 172 when I had a 200bhp Volvo T4. The 172 felt a lot quicker & obviously held the road better.

Does that Magnex adjust for height? So if you wnated to you could modify the bumber so the exhaust slotted in nicely!!

No worries with heat from the exhaust - mines quite close - been on the car for about 15 months now.

Just had my Magnex fitted today - same design as above. They also do the 6x4 oval tailpipe but I decided it was too much on a small car. The twin exit suits my Cup down to the ground :) I already have a Green replacement panel filter and my car has covered 1600 miles from new.

My opinion :

Very good quality system, but could could be a touch better finished around the exhaust exits. The car feels more muscular - no massive gains, but feels a bit more grunty, especially in the low and mid range. Throttle response is a touch sharper too. The exhaust note is great - nice and deep with no cheap rasp to it. Its not too intrusive, but you know its there. I love the way it makes your chest vibrate between 3500 and 4000rpm when you boot it :D

Negatives:

It takes away the sudden kick in noise and acceleration when the motor comes on cam at 5000rpm. However, this is due to the gains lower in the rev range so you dont get that step. I was hoping for more of a howl from the exhaust note when getting towards the rev limiter, but it just stays deep and booming. Not a major problem though.

Verdict?

Great system - recommended. Now approved by Magnex for 2003 spec cars ;)

Magnex is actually a brand name owned by a company called Exhaust Technologies. They own another well-known one - Micron. So tell your stockbroker Exhaust Technologies and youll be ok ;)
