New owner of a V6.

My dad was part of the development team for these whilst working for TWR. A group of them had fun driving some down for the press launch in France - hot cabins and not so quick but great road presence! Pretty sure at least one press driver went off the road.. there was also a yellow development car he has pics of that was written off during testing.

Anyway, a great car and fantastic project to have been involved with. My dad has some books about the early cars and development which I'm sure you could find copies of on eBay.

Enjoy!

Dropped the car off at Scotts this morning, strange as never having seen one on the road there were 5 x phase 2 down there. Fascinating place to look around and a very genuine guy.

Had a good chat about the car, was useful as I know the square root of bugger all about them and he came up with a few interesting points about them.

It also gave me a chance to look at a few that had aftermarket seats in them. Totally undecided as to what to do ref seats i.e whether to change them or not and, if I did, then what type, I'd like to say it helped but, it didn't  . Also chatted to him re aftermarket steering wheels and sort of decided between us to stick with the original, maybe get a refurbed one from ktec done in alcantara.

Check out snappy on here if you're after a re-trimmed steering wheel.

After market seats are nice, but a mare to get right because of the colour of the interior. I saw some blue leather Recaros a long time ago (not the bright blue Recaro Trendlines ones from a Megane F1) which I should have bought! To be honest though, I don't mind the standard seats, they're pretty comfortable.

Have to agree with you on the comfort of them. Not only that but unsure if a change of seats would spoil the look of the interior, it's not intended to be (or to be used as) a track car so a little dubious of trying to make it look as though it's pretending to be one.
Will check snappy out, would just need a spare wheel to send him. He may have one though, you never know!

I drop into the Abbey occasionally too, I live up the Valley in Ambergate, other side of Belper but i'll keep an eye (and possibly ear....) out for a minty phase 1 V6 :)

lovely looking example and particularly love the engine cover!

....and breathe

Had the dreaded phone call from Scott and the good news is he says it's a good car! Talk about relief
He said the bottom pulley would need replacing as he'd expected, the front callipers had been very nicely painted in his opinion but the only problem was that whoever had fitted them had stuck them back upside down, the rear pads were fitted incorrectly and one of the abs sensors was loose. The air con wasn't working and he thought it may be the condenser, turns out it just needed a re-gas.
It's a nerve wracking time when you take your new toy to a specialist who knows them inside out as you sit there wondering what horrors they're going to find, it was the same with the CSL went it went to a place in Huntingdon.
So, by the time I collect it on the 8th Sept it'll have a clean bill of health, new cam belt, new water pump, new clutch, fully serviced, brake fluid changed and working air con.

Plus a new exhaust

That's the plan, never been a great believer in service history as it can be forged quite easily, especially on an older car.
Bottom the car, start afresh and take it from there, it'll go to Scott for everything.

Great news, always nice to have a good check over for piece of mind. And then you can be comfortable in your ownership knowing it's now perfect

That's good to get a short list of issues. Sort of shows the car has had some tlc in its life. Also good to have a reputable specialist not to far away. All you need to do now is enjoy it.

  A special one.
I have a nice private number plate for this, I bought it for my old PH1 172 which I no longer have.

Number is P1 RUK. [emoji41]

Collected the car back from Scott today.
What a difference!
Cambelt,
New bottom pulley and idlers,
Water pump,
Clutch,
Front brake callipers correctly fitted,
Rear brake pads correctly fitted,
Quicksilver exhaust fitted,
Air con sorted,
New strip thingy fitted to the bottom of the front spoiler,
New D panel fitted to front underside / wheel arches etc. Old one had been worn away in one arch, possibly due to running 18" wheels, and the leading edge had all but disappeared through rubbing on the road due to not being fastened in. It amazes me how someone managed to put up with the racket whilst it was wearing away.
Shed load of screws and bolts that were either loose or missing.
Have been to many specialists with various cars but, never to one that shows as much attention to detail.
He also reckoned someone in the past has spent a good few quid on the car (all brake kit is brand new) but it appears they then tried to save a few quid fitting it themselves....and failing

Scott sent through a few pics of bits being done,
Whoever had the idea of replacing the rear seats in a Clio with this lump either deserves a medal, or a trip to the madhouse...undecided as to which.
Engine with covers off,

Looks way better with the new exhaust. Better tips and stainless so no rusty lump showing through the grilles!

Rep Trophy spoiler arrived today courtesy of eBay, will be fettled to fit on Friday then it'll be off to the painters.
No joy with PH2 wheels, put an offer on a set on eBay, in need of a refurb hence the offer instead of the asking. If that fails I'll stick 15mm spacers to the existing fronts.
May end up with 10mm on the rears but struggling to find any so it may involve going down the custom route.

At last, seats sorted

Went to GSM and have to say, was impressed with the amount of seats to view, the service and the advice that was freely given.

Had a look at the classics selection but, not exactly a lard ass here (34 waist), couldn't get my hips into 99% of them!

Eventually narrowed the choice down to 2 one of which was the Cobra Imola Pro. As posted earlier this is available in a grey cloth material. Decided against it for 3 reasons, firstly I thought that although a great seat it looked a bit too modern, secondly, would have looked a bit too drab in full grey and thirdly, it would have made the car look a little too trackday-ish.

So ended up going for the Cobra RSR Classic bucket seat.

This is available in a much larger range of colours and materials than the Imola Pro. It will also serve its purpose without making the car look like a track day wannabe. There are 3 shades of blue vinyl and 2 shades of grey vinyl available so in effect, I could have the shell and centre in 2 different colours. The samples should be with me early next week. I then choose and GSM order the seat.

In the meantime, the only pic I have is of the black one in the showroom.

Re the spoiler, collected it from the painters and fitted it one evening, looked the nuts. However, out in daylight the next day the colour match wasn't quite right, spoke to the painter and he said he'd sort it out no problem. So, it's now back with him and I collect next Saturday.

Well actually an owner for 4 weeks now!
First looked at buying one in 2011 but ended up working overseas so didn't need a car. On my return I went a different route and bought a R53 Mini GP, modified it to within an inch of its life and loved the thing however, finances took a turn for the better and bought an E46 M3 CSL mainly as an investment. 20 months later it paid off quite well and ended up buying an E92 M3 CP, outstanding car and couldn't fault it at all...apart from the fact it bored me to death!
So it got moved on and I decided to find a car with character and, as a result, Phase 1 No 445 ended up belonging to me. Current mileage is 41,000. Have a 2nd car so it isn't going to be a daily as such, however, it will get used regularly. Having had the BMW as an investment was frustrating as, although I profited from it, with being a petrolhead it bugged me massively that I was torn between using it and potentially harming the value of my investment. With the Clio that won't be an issue as values are going to take a back seat to me enjoying the car so whether they go up or down is irrelevant.
Anyhow, since buying it has had an upgraded security system as I tried to get the Tracker transferred from my previous car and they wanted silly money, so much for customer service.
It's also been into the detailers for a 6 day pampering session, he's done two of my previous cars and his work is outstanding. It had a 2 stage m/c polish, coating of gTechnic CSL and a coating of Zymol Concours wax. Wheels, glass and interior are also done with the relevant gTechnic products.
Managed to get hold of a clear engine cover which is now fitted and looks pretty good if you like that sort of thing
End of the month it's off down to Scott at SGMotorsport for a new cam belt, water pump and any other bits he recommends whilst the engine is out.
Mid to late September an Orbisoud back box will be delivered and fitted, hopefully will improve the sound as I think it's a little muted as is.

Then it'll be time for the bank account to recover but, at long last, I have a car that makes me grin each time I open the door to the garage. I know they're not overly quick and that when it's damp they like the idea of going backwards into hedges if pushed a bit too hard but hey, it's worth it!

Enjoy the v6 I'm on my second now

Colour samples arrived from Cobra today, bit rapid as was only at GSM yesterday.
Being ordered in Navy Blue however, the basket weave effect is only available in black so that will be different. GSM are checking if I can still have the eyelets. Can't see why not but will see what they come back with.
Also sorted a steering wheel, ordered the Sparco RenaultSport one from ktec, only available in black so will need retrimming in dark grey alacantara.
Messaged snappy, just awaiting a reply.

  PH1 V6
Seats should be 2 / 3 weeks, eyelets were £50 per seat so they're going on them.
When the steering wheel arrives it's going off to Jack @ Royal, no comms from Snappy.
Collected spoiler back from the painters and it's a much better colour match.
Spacers arrived for the fronts, just awaiting the ones for the rear.
It's getting there

Cheers bud,
Not at all worried re age, I only joke about it
One thing it does give you though is life experience and one of the most important things that teaches you is, what you can do today don't put off until tomorrow!
Once all this work's done, there isn't much else, if anything, needed to make it into the car I want it to be

Unless it's diy. That can always be put off until tomorrow!!!
I've got half a kitchen to finish and ache everywhere from emptying a loft ready for a conversion.
All today's plans are on hold until I can operate all my limbs freely
:-D

I'm ok on that score.
I gave that up years ago
My tool kit now consists of a reversible screwdriver.....and that's how it's staying.

Well I'm 40 so in my diy prime right now... So my wife thinks. Most of it is I'm too tight to pay someone to do a job I can do myself with a bit of research.

Well I'm 62 and my wife thinks I'm still in my prime for DIY!

I'm still messing with car and in process of preparing my 182 for sprinting and hillclimbing next season
