new to the scene , really fancy a 172 cup , what s the best clio to buy

  Ph1
182's are the slowest of the Sports. Their a great girlfriend car tho

OP, stick with the Cup imo. You wont go far wrong. Cheaper to maintain, on paper the fastest outside the V's, lightest, look cool too.

Ph1 172 after that and if your feeling flush then a Trophy.

I only bought my 182 over a 172 because of the colour and cruise control/ slightly newer. You won't go far wrong no matter what you get.

Not in my experience it's not. I borrowed an R27 for a weekend and Andy was in my car which was briefly back to standard and the 172 pulled constantly in all gears. Handling was another story though, miles better chassis and handling is simply on another level to a standard 1*2.

Then again, it all depends on the example of each car. The R27 was on about 10-15k, mine about 80-90k... almost run in :p
Yours is a ph-quick though its cheating lol.
When I ran my 197 against my friends 172 it was completely even, who-ever hit the pedal first pulled a car length at the most ahead. Saying that though Christopher had me by a car length or so from a rolling start :(

I think the op needs to drive them all and decide which he prefers.

I don't see the point of the cup, as I feel ABS is very useful on a road car. Even Noble has said he'd put it on his new car if they could afford it.

Ooooh! Controversial! :rasp:

Before owning one, I would have said that every car should have ABS.

But - right now - I don't miss it.

In the crappy weather of the last few weeks, I've not missed ABS once. I drove my cousins (new-to-him) 172 last week and while braking from a sensible speed - up to a junction - on a slippery, pot-holed road I found the ABS really distracting!

I'm sure that on track it'd be a different matter, but in the snow and slush - a lack of ABS was a boon IMO!

The Cup is a noticeably better drive than all other Mk2 Clios other than the Trophy though. It feels lively and more nimble than the Trophy with fast direction changes.

I agree about the ABS thing though. It's there to save your ass when some t**t does something you didn't expect causing you to stomp the pedal.

This is why i bought another! Look the best also,

172 Phase 2 (non Cup) is the most watered down out of all the Mk2 range

Have to agree, and some would say i was going to agree with you whatever!

lol, but, for me, trophy may have fancy suspension and ABS etc, but it doesnt do enough for the extra money, and the cup is the best colour by far.

I am pretty sure it is one of the last of the hardcore hot hatches!

  172 cup
Its the hardcore image that attracts me to the cup. been in 1 before and it just seemed to pull forever. my mates dad owns a ford anglia that used to have a 2.1 pinto engine in it , he raced a cup at crail and got pumped . took the engine out and put in a nissan 200sx . 1.8 turbo and supercharger . it now runs 12secs qtrs . he said it was the cup that made him decide to change the engine . he couldnt believe theey were that quick

I disagree about the Trophy, massively. It's B-road composure is epic, there really isn't much that'll lose it.

I've not driven a cup, but I don't see the point as it's the last RS I'd purchase. I'd even have a 197 over one tbh.

And how is the cup the purest in terms of weight? Isn't there very little between a 172cup and a 172ph1?

You need to.......... This is why you dont understand.

i own a 172 and have driven 3 cups, and the cups do feel alot more hard core. they feel faster more focused and imo you can feel the difference in weight.

abs is not a problem if you know your limits

Ph2, would have to be the trophy or vee.

The best clio is probably a mk2 vee or a 197 imo

Trophy or V6.

Ph2.

Trophy or 182.

Got to be the Trophy.

They are all the best. Buy them all.

This.

It f**king varies.
