Newbie - ordering 182 Cup

Sweet, cheers for that. I had a feeling the 182 had a leather wheel, and I was worried the Cup had a plastic one...that might have swung me to buy the slower car ;)

im just checking to make sure, i saw a 182 cup at the dealer the other day and that had leather wheel but you know what renault are like

from renault uk

Why will I regret it though?

I have no desire for leather seats or rear headrests, or a split rear seat. I always drive with my lights on, and I dont care for auto-wipers or spangly lights and windscreen. Id rather have a slightly edgier and faster car to be honest.

Air-con is the only feature Im worried about, and the Cup has it, albeit manual. Im sure either car is fantastic for the money, but I want the Cup, not a bloated imitation (joke;))

Anyway whats the concern about the "cheap one" all the time? To me thats the spirit of the 182 Cup. I dont personally see the logic in people complaining that the Cup has too many gadgets and therefor weight, but choose the more expensive, heavier gadget laden option.

Thats just me though. Both cars are fantastic it seems so everyones a winner really.

Hi Roy

I have just bought a Cup and love it to bits. Im the same as you i bought the car to razz around in and wanted to get it a cheap as possible and got my car from my dealer for 10999 with lots of haggling.

This talk about which one is better is starting to wear thin, each to their own i wont regret buying a cup in three months (182blue) because i bought THE CAR that I want.

I am only in the country for three months a year so having an EVO 7 loosing silly money in my garge didnt make sence so that is why i bought the Cup, yes it is cheaper and lower specced but i really couldnt care less.

Anyway Roy whatever you choose im sure it will be right for you and im sure you will enjoy it.

Cheers mate, I know Ill convince myself the Cup was the better option for me anyway :)

As soon as my finances are sorted out around Tuesday time, Ill be placing my order for an Inferno 182Cup....the only hard part is going to be waiting.

Might try and find a better price than £12380 though!

Hi Roy,

If you can stretch to the full 182, it has just come joint second in EVOs car of the year awards. It is a fantastic little car, as is im sure the 182 cup.

Unfortunatly the 182 cup was simply a marketing exercise, along the lines of lets put cheaper bits in and oh look we saved 19kg!. 19k is a kit bag or similer, would you really notice a loss of speed?

The 182 cup uses the cup name but in reality compare the spec of the 182 cup to many a top of the range car and the 182 cup will have more goodies. It is no stripped out homologation special and Renault have unfortunatly watered down the cup name by using it in this way. It is not a limited edtion as far as Im aware but customers will be fooled into buying it as they want the cachet of the term cup without actually forgoing any driver aids, luxories.

Just a point of order.

The 172 Cup was hardly a stripped out homologation special.

It still had far too much crap in it. I have no idea where this whole idea of a "Cup" brand name came from.

The 182 carries over the suspension revisions from the 172 Cup but with further improvements and increased power output. A 182 with Cup packs deserves to be called a Cup every bit as much as the 172 Cup.

  Yaris Hybrid

Yeah but then they talking about its xenon lights!!!! So I dunno if they knew what they were driving!

  Spec C 12.5@110 (345/355)

Defo a Cup, no washer jets, price is stated to be £13,800, weight is correct for a Cup, that and the fact it is in the test as a Clio 182 Cup.

  Yaris Hybrid

"and the shadows cast by the Porsche and Renaults dazzling Xenons as we crest each and every rise"

See I always said that I couldnt see sod all of a different between standard and Xenon lights and EVO have just proven a point because I am looking at the photo now and they are definitely not Xenons!!!

Cup came from the racing series and i agree renault could have gone further with the stripping out but it was in fact a homo special!

  Yaris Hybrid

But the suspension on a 182 is closer to that of the Cup racing car than the 172 Cups?

Agree the 172 Cup is a homo special!

Yeah I think they improved the suspension over the 172 cup, I would even go as far to say the 182 cup is a better hot hatch than the 172 cup, but its to close to the std 182 to be called a cup version and it has too many toys and driver aids to be a pure blood!

I appreciate the ongoing advice, but how can you be fooled into buying the cheaper car, that is marginally (if at all) sharper, because you dont require leather seats and a bunch of other stuff you might not want to pay for?

Sorry but I still dont get the logic. Some of you guys seem to think the Cup isnt as pure as the 172 Cup because it has too may luxuries, and of course youd be right, but how does going for the even heavier, more luxurious car, make sense in that context? I genuinely dont understand.

Anyway the last thing I want to do is appear as some arguing newbie. I do totally agree that in real terms, the Cupped 182 is a better car than the Cup, but I dont agree that its a better value car (for me anyway) Everyones priorities are different of course.

I just cant wait to get my order placed now! :devilish:

Dont mean to get personal but I believe you are getting your car on finance?
Would this probably be over 5 years and do you think you would keep your car for those 5 years?

Just interested as my next car will probs be on finance you see.
Only driving a 1.2 at the moment thou.

Gee

Bank loan yeah. Over 4 years, Ill be aiming to keep it at least that long though.

The loan is agreed, but I wont order the car until I get the official offer in writing, which should be early this week. Finance wise, Ive been caught off-guard by a works promotion. The company car has to go but Ill be earning more...dont have the funds to buy the car outright just now, and didnt want to commit to a shorter loan just in case the job doesnt work out and I end up earning less again.

As far as Im concenred the car is worth a small financial burden, and if it doesnt work out I can always sell it. Afterall my house is worth double what I paid for it, so why not have some fun :devilish:

Thats exactly the way i see it mate! If it doesnt work out you just sell the car - so what, only live once, why not have some fun!

The steering wheels are different. The 182 Cup has the one from the Dynamique, still leather though. The182 version has a thicker rim with the rubber thumb grips.

Thats sensible and yeah each to their own! I just cant help thinking its little more than a badge exercise but nonetheless it would be that much sharper than the 182 (albeit 20kg shaper)!!

True, I went from a 306 Rallye to a 172 Cup and the Clio was positively luxurious in comparison...

However, there was still a lot of stuff removed when compared to the 172 Sport and a massive weight saving of 89kg, which does make a difference.

Besides the weight saving there was also the upgraded handling over the 172 Sport (not an issue with the 182 due to the options), the alloys, the spoiler & splitter (again now options), the colour and the "alleged" exclusivity, not to mention a good couple of grand cheaper.

There was a point to this car as it was quite different to the 172 Sport, wheras there is not much difference between the 182 Soort and 182 Cup!

Even now the 172 cup is still practically 100KG lighter than the 182. thats a hell of a lotta weight.

I dont think the 182 Cup should be a Cup, I think it was a marketing exercise, Just a lower spec 182.

Roy, I still would however go for the 182 Cup, I am like yourself not fussed about extras, hence owning a 172 Cup which is by the way a fantastic car.

For me on the road it makes no odds but that extra 1 Millisecond counts .

I will probably be going for the Inferno orange or red version next year.

Hi

Still think the 182 with the cup packs is the way forward, the ineterior is superb, the extras such as cruise control invaluable on the old motorway. The handling with the suspension pack is wicked and will be no better on the cup as the suspension is the same. For the less sub 1 second performance upgrade I would not sacrifice the long list of options the 182 would give you.

Think about it, the CUP will also loose value quick and be more difficult to sell on without the extras. Like the 172 Cup my local dealer still has about 10 172 cups it is still trying to shift.

But if finance is the driving force then the 182 Cup will be a worthy buy and you will loads of fun, a brave colour choice by the way.......

Later Dude

This is meant to be Renaults top hot hatch...and it has a steering wheel from the Dynamique! Why? To save weight? :p

if you can afford the 182 with cup packs then the 182 cup is not even worth thinking about!

You can buy a 182 with cup packs for £12200 so in effect you are getting the same price for a better car.

You can also get a 182 cup for around £11100 if you know where to look and really do want the inferior lower spec, lower down the range model.
