Noisey power steering 16V

Hi - just bought an N-reg 16V and theres a grinding sound that seems to be coming from the power steering, it only happens when Im cornering. Now, being a novice with 16V Clios (and most cars to be honest!) I wanted to check this wasnt a normal noise for this type of car. Didnt want to look like a typical knows-nothing-about-cars-girly when I took it to a garage to be fixed! Advice would be most welcome - thanks!

does it sound like air from the power steering pump (like a hiss noise)? If it does i dont think its anything to worry about, someone told me to change the steering fluid so i did and it still does it and always has.

Hope this helps

Well, to be honest it sounds more like a grinding than a hissing. Although I could be wrong... Some good ideas for me to investigate though so thanks guys! Ill have a proper listen on the way home from work and see if I can relate it to anything you have all mentioned.

These cars are way cool! I was looking for a 106gti coz theyre also way cool, but I got this one for like half the price and its just as fun!! And less mileage than the 106s!

Still even if its nackered it wont cost too much to fix and thats a good price for a 68k car. You could push for 3k if its a mint one. Has it a FSH?

Where you from?

yep, sounds like a bargain to me, shame about the colour though, should have got a naples red one ;), just kidding, hope she puts as big a smile on your face as mine does for me!

If its a grinding noise, maybe the wheel bearing......maybe lol....Does it make the sound, when not moving...

Try taking the cap, top up fluid before if its low, then turn the steering wheel from lock to lock about 5-10 times, and put the cap back on and see if that makes any difference?

Sounds like you have got a peach of a valver to :D

no offence laura, just joshing with you!

the valver sounds like a minter, how did you find her?

get some pics up as soon as you get chance.

Where abouts are you, you should go to some meets, u will learn alot there.

Welcome, and enjoy the rollercoaster ride that is valver ownership!!!

Leather was an option from new. Nice choice of car Laura. Make sure the cambelt gets done soon if its not been done already. It will be very coatly if it breaks.

Like the sound of it not costing much to fix Tom20v! And yep, has got a FSH! Im about 15 miles south of Oxford - how about you?

Now now, NV, I know youre only jealous coz you want a blue one!! Only kidding - like the colour of yours. Is that a factory colour?? (Heres another chance for me to prove my ignorance of clios...)

yep it is a factory colour, and the smart amongst us (naples valver owners!!!) have decided that they are the rarest form of clio!

I am jealous your right, but not of the colour, of the fact that you seem to have got yourself a very sweet valver there, as andyvalver said, check through your reciepts and history to see if the cam belt has been done, if not get it done, u will regret it if u dont and it snaps!

Im from Lancashire, all the way up ere!!!

OK NV, Ill get a piccie up over the weekend - although be warned, it has chrome DTM mirrors on it at the mo but theyre coming off and the standard ones put back on...when I have time to sort it, that is!

Well like i said i had a few probs with my p/s when i had my 16v and it didnt cost much to fix. like you say i had a kinda grinding noise but didnt feel as if it was rubbing anywhere?! Get a fluid change and you should be ok.

Oh and im based in the south west on the coast. Clevedon to be precise. Check my profile to see my old beasty!

Sorry Winston, with me not being a fully fledged member just yet, I cant post replies within 3 mins of each other! Thanks for the info - it made me remember that if the wheel is turned left to right whilst parked up it still makes the noise...

Thanks for the warning of the cam belt - it has already been done though so no worries on that side.

Lancs NV? My twin bros went to a posh school up there - Stoneyhurst! Nice county, lots of fields and greenery from what I can remember...
