Non sport sporting 172 alloys

Got a set of 172 alloys off a member on here, Delivered weds although missing them and having to travel to City Link depot was a pita.

Took me 1 evening and 2 days on and off to refurb them in Rover steel grey, Its no where near perfect but you cant tell unless your close up.

Love the look... Only problem is the very slight rubbing and sort of air resistance sound, Which i think could be the tracking needing looking at at possibly front spacers.

Is the tyre on the rear wheel on the right way around? It looks the a directional 'V' pattern.

yea that looks like the right should be on the left side. very nice colour mate

Oh..

I thought the v pattern pushed out, But thinking about it now yes they are ! ha

The front left tyre is MOUNTED on the wrong way round.. Will this be ok? Im wondering is its also contributing to the slight noise.

Will get those changed round tonight...

The rears arent rubbing on anything but i think the rubber moulding spikes are brushing against a mounting thats close, Think ill snip the rubber spikes off and see if it stops.

Got to wait till monday for the tracking.

Rear wheels have been switched round now, Clipped the little moulding spikes off and it seems to have got better. Still think i need spacers on the front..

But i think the brushing of the spikes was causing some of the noise seeing as it is a tight fit.

Ebay 5mm spacers ok? Or can some one link me up to a good set please (just for fronts)

Opinions on the lamin X fogs? I love them personally, Front end will look nice once ive got the colour coded parts on i think.

laminx looks good man, dont get ebay spacers! unless you want your wheels to fall off in the middle of town, get decent ones mate :)

Id rather spend a few more quid and get a kit with bolts if thats needed, With the eibach susp the ride is harder imo... And if the bolts aren't in far enough i could see my wheels going walk abouts !

Opinions ? Or places i can get the spacers please?

I could get away without them i would just have to put up with the very slight noise... There's no real rubbing at all.

Not sure if anyone cares but i want opinions so ill keep yabbering on...

Had the tracking checked today after loweing, Nice bloke said it was all good and didnt charge...

Have 5mm spacers coming for the front.. But im wondering how much to space the back?

Im thinking 10-15mm hubcentric?

Anyone know of any non sports spaced out?

looks really good in that colour, prob the first time I have seen 172 stanard alloys that I like!

Cheers lads, Only want a sport bumper and possibly a stealth/recessed exhaust and id be happy.

Need to sort out this bloody noise, Spacers should be delivered soon.

The noise you hear is probably light scrubbing.

Don't buy cheap spacers, even 5mm puts loads more stress on the bolts.

If you want the best you should get nothing less than 20mm H&R Hubcentrics @ just short of £100....a pair.

There are cheaper options but be careful with some brands as the bolts supplied are nothing short of dangerous.

Here's my old dynamique on H&R 20mm all round. ;)

That does look nice, Ive narrowed the noise down to the rears rubbing on the shock covers... I have 5mm spacers coming soon..

Should i not use them?

Surely 5mm will be fine?

I dont really want to spend 200 For spacing all round, Suppose i could look for second hand.. Just want to get this noise gone.. I can live with it for now and its causing no damage.. Just slight noise.

Fit the 5mm for now but I would not advise spirited driving with them on at all!

There are cheaper (albeit heavier) alternatives but you can't beat the H&R's.

You will see what I mean when you are screwing the bolts back in with the spacers on, theres barely any thread to use to secure the wheels.

You shouldn't need spacers, I didn't on my 1.2 with 172 wheels. They may well rub a bit at the start but all they rub against is plastic and it quickly wears away and stops.

Yeah i understand what your saying, I was having a look today. They are not very long as it is.. Well the spacers have cost me £20... I will fit them and see if it solves the problem noise wise front or back temporarily..

I dont need the spacers as there is enough clearance, Its just there is noise from the very slight rubbing which is noticable... So i guess ill try these

Then i might look into some rear H&Rs / FK spacers

I am thinking this as well mate.. There is enough clearance with no spacers as said, Its just there is slight rubbing on the shock covers... This probably would ware away at the plastic and stop the noise.

On the rear right there is a lot of clearance up towards the top, Where as the rear left its very close to the tyre at the top and it started to rub through the waxol / underseal.. I sanded some of this away and ill have a look to see if thats solved some of that problem..

Also on the rear bar each side there are two bits that stick out not doing anything, So i ground these down a bit..

I think ill much about with the rears and see if i can stop the noise then move on from there..

Interested to see if anyone else non sport was running sport wheels fine without spacers?
