Oh My God What a Day. Dephaser Pulley anyone!!!!

  RENAULT SPORT CLIO 172
What, how, when and How Much...

Just took my 172 03 to the garage today and been told the depahser needs replacing. I have just had the timing belt changed 4000 miles back and now this. Could someone please advise how much this should cost to repair as £780 seems a bit steep. i have been told that the timing belt will need to be replaced again and timing set again is that true??????? i am having the worst day ever and the Clio has cost me over £900 this month already with MOT and Tax!!

I had to have mine done (luckily at cambelt change time) at Birchdown. Think it cost circa £550 inc dephaser pulley, belts, pulleys etc.

Shop around the independents/specialists and see what they come back with mate.

Surely the garage who originally replaced the cambelt is liable for that?

Try pinning the blame on people thats the problem. I have to go through the garages complaints procedure which takes weeks for them to tell me they still arent responsible and then take them to a small claims court. its drawn out but i think i will do it. No choise really is there is a chance of clawing the cash back. Will let you know. Dont recommend Nationwide Auto in Mansfield as this is the main cause>

Did you ask them to replace the pulley when you got the belts done?

I have a spare pulley if you need one.

claim through their liability insurance and they will probably arrange an inspection if you are certain they are to blame for the damage

Why would he have a right to claim for anything? He got his cambelt done 4 thousand miles back.

Thats like 4 - 6 months of motoring for the average person. A lot can happen in that time and theres no proof that there was anything wrong or wearing with the depahser at the time of cambelt change.

He's been told his depahser needs changing (wear and tare) not the pulley has screwed up.

we have a reasonable expectation of how long something is supposed to last. Most garages will offer a 12 months or 12K mileage which will prove that what has been installed is Fit for purpose. The depahaser on this occassion was replaced along with the timing as part of an engine replacement. The engine is under a 6 months parts and labour warranty due to expire on the 3rd of June. The post wasnt logged as a way to protest about who is in the wrong but to try and find out the process of replacing a Dephaser Pulley such as Cost, time and does the Timing Belt officially need to removed and replaced?

Nope, having the cambelt done and the dephaser dying are two completely unrelated things. They just don't last forever unfortunately and its timed it badly.

Looking at the post, the dephaser was replaced fella.

Just says timing belt replaced? Not the dephaser and the belt will need doing again as it has to come off to change the pulley. Could get away with the tensioner and idlers if they were changed 4k ago and just do the two belts to save money.

Hairy muff missed that one, got a be a warrenty job then surely renault give a 12 month warrenty on parts for a start.

Ah thats a totally different ball game then. You never mentioned the depahaser had been replaced prior :)

Was assuming going by your opening post you only had a belt change and was pee'd off at the fact they never spotted it was worn or wearing 4k's back

Give them hell
