Oil around engine bay (pic)

Checking fluuid levels on the car this morning, I noticed a worrying amount of oil around the engine bay. I would love to say where, but I don't know what the parts are called.

Most of the oil had collected in the channels under the metal 'cover'.

Normal, or should I be using my warranty?

its a bit difficult to sus what that is from that close up but i think thats looking at the lower inlet manifold, so the only point above that that carries oil pressure is the cam carrier or the oil seperator on top of it

my guess is cam carrier

  LY 182
and if it is that yeah go for warrenty as its a 7 odd hour job to reseal the cam carrier

i cleaned it all up a few months ago, but its come back.

people say that the engines do leak through the bolts, but this is quite a lot of oil. Is that whats its called then, the lower inlet manifold? I'll need to explain to Renault where the oil is probably, so will need to know what its called lol

  LY 182
looks like it yeah
the obvious way to find oil leaks is look at the highest point above the puddle of oil which in theory is going to be one of the cam carrier bolts
youd be better off sussing where its coming from yourself, because no doubt if it is cam carrier they will try to fob you off with something else thats less work

I cant picture where abouts in the engine bay that is, but Ive never seen one leak that much like that.

think it's the lower plenhem chamber..it's not good loesing all that surly, unless he's done a oil change and somes leaked down..

had this on mine just after i bought it. mine was the cam carrier. got it sorted at a local specialist for £100ish whilst having some other work done.

take it they just took the bolt out splodged some silicone on it and put it back in?
unless the "other work" was a cambelt change that makes more sence

Its warrenty time basically, you'll get a free cambelt out of it too if they do it right. Big job for something so simple.

You've got oil leaking from the cam carrier/cover and you want it fixing, simple. Pretty sure theres a technical note on it.

indeed, thats the plan mate :)

Dont think thats very fair to be honest your just gunna have to pay someone to look, I'v never used lymington for warranty myself (I assume thats where your going) but my dad has taken his laguna there once or twice they were very reasonable and sorted it. Also took it back after the warranty expired for something too cant remember exactly what sorry but they sorted that too. Just go in and see what they say first. You could always go to a different one if there c***s theres a few people on another local website I speak too who work there too. (westover Poole)

its defo the cam carrier. mine is doin it too straight onto exhaust manifold. pain in the arse. they been producing this engine for years surely there must be a better sealant for it. tut

I've had the same problem, took it Jay Bee Banbury and fixed it under warranty, also got them to change all belts at the same time,so all have been done at 26k.

Result.Get it booked in now.

yep, cams have to come out etc and belts are always changed when its taken off.
does you a favour that its leaking there really
if i had one on warrenty i'd slacken off a couple of the bolts just before the warrenty run out ;)

yeah they will have to the belts just mke sure u say specifically that they do change them, ask for proof.

In my experiance if there is any way for them to get out of it being there problem they will so stand your ground.

good luck !

How long is your warrenty?

Chances are they will try a quick fix first of all taking the bolt(s) out and trying to seal them.

Yes matey,I did offer to pay for the belts etc but they its warranty work, got them to give me a copy of the work done and they signed it,just for proof:)

thanks for all the advice.

Will phone up tomorrow and tell them the cam cover seal's leaking, and check that both belts will be changed in the process...

i've only got 1 month left on warranty, so will be interesting to see what they say

i'll see how good this "Renault Advanced used car warranty" really is....

to be honest its not really a problem, ive never had to top the oil up between changes (every 6k) so its really not loosing enough to worry about, but I may as well see what they say.

Hi Mate,

My cam cover was leaking ( this is what yours might be ). Take it to Renault and get them to fix it. My Trophy was fixed and paid for by Renault! has it was still under warrenty.

noticed this on my 182, took it to mark fish, he blasted all the oil away, drove it for a few days went back and he saw it was coming out of the bolts.

Car was booked in, hours labour later and all the bolts were sealed and it hadnt come back ... should really check it again!

Need to take the top inlet off and seal the bolts, mark did all of them even tho only 3 or so were leaking!

He drew me a picture to show me how it was leaking ...

fubar, mine is the same, the oil is coming from one of the valve train cover bolts, the very first near the oil filler boss. I need to have the bolts sealed but the oil leak is minor as it does not consume oil between changes plus I am out of warranty, at least the leak is not enough to show a low level.

Well, phoned renault today and had a few words with the service manager. Due to my car only having an extended dealer warranty left, they will only fix the problem, which in this case is stopping the leak in any way they see fit.

Basically he said they'll just reseal the bolts... so i told him I would do it myself :)

Yeh had a feeling they wouldn't really be interested with the extended warrenty, I swear its not worth the paper its written on.

Seal the bolts and get it in the auto trader, summer is coming PC World's car park needs a VX in its life!
