Oil on top of Engine, is this bad??

  A4 Avant & A3
When doing the old 6k Oil change over the weekend i noticed oil on top of the engine.

not knowing a great deal about these things, i'm just wondering if this is kind of normal? or if i have a slight oil leak.
(been hearing about a common 172/182 oil leak.. is this it?
Any ideas?

Mate mine went into Renault on Friday with this problem, and has been re-booked in to get it fixed.

Renault told me, there is a little hole on the joint of the rocker cover. Renault use a sort of putty sealant instead of a head gasket. It's a big job, requires taking off cam belt and head of engine. About 8 hours work (mine is going in for 2 days)

Get it booked into Renault, hopefully it is under warrenty!?

8hours!!! hahahaha, gotta love renault!!! the head stays on, 5hour job MAX

95% of them leak there, very common

hell.. so it is a problem!! bugger
It's under warranty until November (luckily!)

I didn't think it was too much of a problem.. I was wrong.

Better get the thing booked in.

Thanks for the quick replies

By the way, would this make the 'oil ------' & SERV light come on when the oil isn't all that low? (i've been having that recently)

can do a quick fix too by sealing the bolt heads, which I think they did on mine as it didnt take that long for mine to be done.

That was about 12 - 18k miles ago and never been a problem since.

That's Renault for ya. After having my car for 7 1/2 hours on Friday, the report said "no oil found" I said WTF and laughed! I pointed the oil leak to them in a second after lifting the bonnet!

If they can't find a little pool of oil in 7 1/2 hours, how will they get on fixing this? If it wasn't for the warrenty I wouldn't go to bloody Renault.

are we fixing the air con? or is it going in the bin?

I thought Yoz said that he was going to pull it out and fit a 172 Cup altenator and bracket so that the aircon pretentioners and belt does not have to be replaced. Im going to sell the aircon pipe on ebay [whats left of it! lol]

yeah but he was under the impression that the 172 alternator was the same as a 172 cup one, its not from what i remember, so we need to check

OK... well if thats the case and that you will be using the Aircon pretensioners etc, Im not too interested in having the aircon pipe put back in. Aircon is for pussies.

Has he made up his mind on what he is doing yet.... regarding the pretensioner/aircon etc??? [cheapest option of course ;)]
