Oil Pressure and Oil Temperature - Help!

  RB 182 cup
Re: Oil Pressure and Oil Temperature

from my past cars ive found it better to fit the senders into a blank in the main oil gallery to get a more accurate reading, not too sure on if there is any tho but im sure you could tee off the original oil pressure switch

Re: Oil Pressure and Oil Temperature

Obv I came from the Williams having these dials as standard and in a wierd way being rid of them has been a good thing. Esp the oil pressure. Pressure would read differently all the time and I'd always worry something was wrong. In that sense not having them now is good...

Speak to Foxy as he's got them working on his 172 engine in the valver hasn't he?

Re: Oil Pressure and Oil Temperature

I had them fitted using two t piece from where the standard oil pressure switch is fitted.
Only thing was the oil pressure sensor was a bit on the big side and it was a bit tight for space after i'd refitted the standard pressure switch and oil temp sensor.

Have a scan on Merlin Motorsports website and Demon Tweeks for fittings.

I tried my local hydraulics places such as Pirtek and Stauff etc but they had no metric fittings in stock so it was quicker to use the above places.

What about this -

http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/Perfo...ries/LMA_Oil_Pressure_Remote_T_Piece/812/1935

I imagine i can attach the braided hose straight into the block, and then the origional sensor and a guage into the T-piece? Also assuming the thread for the current sensor is M14 x 1.5??

Or if itll fit, this-

http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/Perfo...Accessories/LMA_Oil_Pressure_T_Piece/812/1861

Id rather not use a sandwich plate if i can get away with it...

Any problems in using a sump adapter for temperature sensor as well?

Re: Oil Pressure and Oil Temperature

The first link you posted with the hose has no sealing face on it resulting in oil chasing down and leaking out the threads under pressure as there metric.

As for the second one (the rectangular block) its a better one to use.
The reason for it is you can place a copper sealing washer (known as a Dowty Washer- which can be found on eay or a local hydraulics source) against the face of it to seal on the engine block the same as the standard oil pressure light/switch sensor.

Its the one i had and i had my 1/8" Npt Male Oil pressure and temp sender screwed into the side and my standard oil pressure light/switch sensor screwed into the end of it.

I'll try and fit better pics if i have on my laptop as i never updated my oil fittings thread with my findings.
Failing that i'll get some pics up tomorrow of what i used.

I removed my t piece from the block and am using the standard oil pressure light/switch sensor again as the threads on my engine block were not liking the trial and removal of M14 fittings all the ime and were getting rough.
I was worried i damage them completely = BIG BUCKS........ :(

I forgot to say a sump plug with a hole to suit you oil temp sender aint a bad idea as long as the sensor wires back to the car asre well protected from the elements in a conduit or protection of some sort.
The only problem i found with this idea is nobody could answer to me the threads on the sumps plug and my local Renault stealer was useless.
I didn't fancy dumping fresh oil at the time to find it out.

Re: Oil Pressure and Oil Temperature

Heres a pic of what i settled for before removal but it doesn't show the fitting with the standard oil pressure light/switch sensor hooked in.

The adaptor in the end of the T fitting is to reduce the M14 x 1.5 Female thread to 1/8" NPT to allow me to fit my temperature gauge sensor in the end as it was too long to go in the side.

Re: Oil Pressure and Oil Temperature

Makes sense, so its M14 into the block, m14 female at the other end for the O/E sensor, and then 1/8th in the top for my gauge.

Sounds good :)

Yip, you may need to get shopping for an adaptor if the oil sender/sensor you have if it happens to have metric threads as i think some of them can be :(

The port in the side is only suitable for a oil pressure gauge as the sender/sensor for temperature is twice the lenght of most oil pressure sender/sensor thread shanks/shaft...

Its quite self explanatory in these example pics the difference in lengths.

Re: Oil Pressure and Oil Temperature

Ben make sure that you don't get mixed up between BSP threads and NPT threads as there different. It's just D1CKY refers to his being an 1/8th NPT.

Re: Oil Pressure and Oil Temperature

Yeh, in pretty anal when it comes to measurements, i double check before buying as i hate things arriving wrong.

Just got to order the sum plug adapter, pretty sure its m14 x 1.5.

The difference with NPT and BSP is pretty visible when you see them, as NPT threads are tapered although you can get tapered BSP thread to make things a bit more confusing.

NPT

http://www.google.co.uk/images?q=NPT+thread&hl=en&gbv=2&tbs=isch:1&sa=N&start=20&ndsp=20

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_pipe_thread

BSP

Just make sure the senderes/sensore you get with or for your gauges suit the T pieces and oil fittings you get as some can be metric as said before but can be supplied with Female/male crossover adaptors to change from metric threads to NPT.

Where did you find out the size of the sump plug threads ?

Where you getting your t piece from ?

Demon Tweeks ?
Merlin Motorsport ?

Re: Oil Pressure and Oil Temperature

I havent found the size of the sump plug :( Sure i read somewhere it was m14x1.5.

t-piece will be from tweeks, along with the sump plug, gauges from eBay, then some new oil and away i go :)
