oil spillage in boot

didnt fasten the top on oil bottle properly and was greeted with the pungent smell of performance ST 10w/40... not much leaked out but enough to saturate a small area of the carpet in the boot. took carpet out today and the oil has perished the glue between the carpet and the felt bit on the back (the green stuff) it also started breaking down the spongy section of stuff that appears to be glued to the base part of the boot (anyone know what thats for) anyway took the carpet out and gave the boot a good wash down with some strong washing up liquid and its totally clean now. cleaning the carpet bit was much more difficult its basically had it, the smell will never come out without giving it a serious clean and i think the backing felt will just disintegrate. anyone ever replaced the rear carpet (in the boot) and if so how much it set you back (its a 182 by the way)

Not changed one, but had a similar incident with frementing apples from my tree....

leaked through the bag.... JEEEZ what a stinker.... it was like something died.

Anyway, got fariy and brush and hose out, and got cleaning.

Underside not the best of materials for sound deadening.... so I took it off and replaced it with dynomat.

think is ive tried everything with the oil... boiling water and fairy, scrubbing, mister muscle degreaser and spent hours scrubbing then i get the hose and wash it down and you can see the oil still there and it still reaks think ill get on the phone to renault in the morning and see how much a small piece of carpet costs ... anyone wanna take a guess how much its likely to be ?

Well... they wanted £25 for a blanking plate (where I removed the dash mouted CD changer in the megane).... But £5 for a storage hole.... Engine plastic cover is about £100....!!!!?!??!

Bizzare pricing from renault.

My guess: Anthing from 30 to 100.

If it is too much, then try nitromors stuff.... or something designed for engine oil (there must be something out there)...

u wont get engine oil out of fabric, thats a fact
yeh, this i am starting to believe, oh well lets see what ridiculous price renault can quote

my first car was a really old ford escort estate. The guy used it to move engines around... the boot well was full of oil... but that car never had a spot of rust at the back

well, at least the carpet wont go rusty ;)

in case anyone is interested the carpet in the boot of a 182 (the single piece that sits over where the spare wheel well would be) costs a might £155 + VAT !!!!

gonna do what omar suggested.. take the backing off, get the carpet bit washed and replace it with something more substantial and Cheaper !!!

JEEEEEZ...

£155 + VAT.... WTF have they been smoking?? ? Hashish?

PS: How much is a load liner type thing? .....

...... and

he didnt get into much detail in fact he said the pricing was confusing so he couldnt guarantee what the exact price would be ... he said

"youll have to more specific"

and i said

"how more specific can i be than to say i want a price for the single piece of carpet that goes over where the spare wheel well would have been" ..

he didnt get it though i dont think, he spoke to someone else and had determined that 155 would get me the bit i wanted ... thing is you could make one for a fiver and surely they just have a template at renault that cuts em out in one swift motion .... alternatively they could be paying nubile 18 year old brazilian swimwear models to cut them out by hand with a butter knife... thats the only way i can see them justifying this total rip off ... so its plan b anyway, im gonna rip that crap sound deadening off the back and give the carpet bit a proper wash then replace the backing with something more suitable

cheers for the advice

Try this

Get a tin of brake cleaner, remove carpet and spray area with the whole tin of cleaner, that will get rid of most of it.

Then pressure wash the carpet, leave to dry...job done may leave a mark but wont smell.

Worked for me before
