Oil type residue on driverside inner Wheel (172)

Hope some one can help. I cleaned the inner wheels of my ph2 172 about three months ago the drivers side one was heavly baked with thick oily residue which took some cleaning.

Now the car does not leak anything on the drive. but i came to clean the wheels again yesterday and about the same thickness of gunk was present again.

Now the brake fluid has not gone down and the ride is fine. Could not see any leaking from the shocks.

What ever is leaking must only be doing it occasionally.

Any ideas / any common faults?

Definitely the clip has broken on the cv boot , thats grease you've got all over your wheel . Or might even be the cv boot itself split but i'd say just the clip . Pretty common thing .

^^^^ It'll need a realy good clean to get all the grease off the outside of the boot or the new clip will eventually just slide off .

Thanks for your help.

Right, so it's a fairly common problem? Is it a very expensive thing to fix, am ok driving the car or has it got safety implications?

Put some thick cable ties , 8mm / 9mm , over your clips on the cv boot as a preventative measure .
