Hi guys,

Getting me cambelt changed soon and taking it to my specialist but im going to source the parts myself as i think i can get them a bit cheaper.
Been told that ill need a main cambelt kit(belt and pulleys), aux belt kit, possibly tensioner and also new water pumps and spark plugs advised as it would save hassle long term. Is this all that is needed and also wheres the cheapest to get the parts from?

On ebay there is a stockist selling renault parts with cambelt kit, aux kit and tensioner for £200ish, so all id need is a water pump and plugs?
got qouted £220 for labour which aint too bad?
Iam i right in saying this is all i need?

Cheers fellas

you're going about this wrong. I for one (and I know other are the same) wont fit parts that I dont supply as it creates all kinds of warranty issues.

If you've been told you need an aux belt kit for a cup......well just lol

water pumps are a VERY rare failure

I charge £250 all in for a 172 cup (non aircon) ALL IN

As above, except i'm £280 for a Cup less dephaser.

If you're taking it ot a true "Specialist" then they will most likely be the same and not becuase we're making s**t loads on the part becuase in truth we make very little on them. I've fitted parts that have been sourced by the customer before and whilst most jobs go swimmingly, as Danny has said it creates all kinds of issues with warranty if/when things go wrong (eg. tensioner isn't right or the wrong timing belt kit has been purchased meaning the idlers are wrong... who pays for my additional time putting it right and fetching parts in a hurry?) so its easier to just say no.

Also, I doubt you can get the parts seriously cheaper than we can as we buy that many of the things - sometimes cheapest isn't bestest ;)

So are you guys saying I shouldn't be paying more than 300 give or take for labour and parts and let the garage get the parts needed? It's the only place local that is a specialist though I'd rather take it the places like Btm, Ktec etc it's too far away

No more than £350 is my honest opinion for a true specialist to supply and correctly replace the timing belt kit on a Clio 172/182 Cup *UNLESS* it needs a dephaser pulley in which case the part alone is going to be an extra £153-170. Also, be sure they are aware of the numerous parts other than the timing belt kit which need replacing as part of Renaults part replacement scheme.

If you have any doubts at all about the ability of this "specialist" garage in your area then seriously, make the trip to somewhere on here that is proven time and time again that thye can do the job right first time. I'm not one for scare mongering and personally I don't give a hoot where you take your car but if people ask for my advice they get my 10 pence worth... in this case a 200mile round trip will be a lot cheaper than replacing/rebuilding a bent valve train.

I had a 182 in last week that had been to a so called specialist in my local area which have a good reputation but they got the Clio totally wrong. They normally work on highly tuned Evo's, Skylines, Audi's, etc and argued that because the engine had good compression it was therefore impossible for the timing to be wrong. Well, that told me! Funny though that when the customer took the car back from me he came back not even 20 minutes after saying how he'd never take the car anywhere again and he couldn't believe that a few degrees out on the cam timing could make such a huge difference.

Ye I went to mendals I know they do good work just something you feel like they forget the exact type of car I rang them asking about aux belt and he defiantly said it want doing so I'm like ok......... Think I'll try rs or falcon engineering might go to rs and I could have a word with him about future plans for the cup
