Thats defo worth it, as good as a respray! The thing that really puts me off spending so much though is how often would you get results like that?! Only once I bet! Still, top notch mate

After doing that, how much paint will be left on the car? Its thinner than eggshell as it is, so should imagine you cant do it too often?

Its the first time its been done properly in 4 years.

You wouldnt do it every week mate - trust me ;)

you shouldnt need to do those steps very often if you follow a proper washing program after doing the above, but its quite acceptable to do a full PC job twice a year, you should be carefull with the #83 rated polishes though. brazo has the facts and figures of how much paint a pc removes, and how much will be left afterwards.

Good pics there Day!

Concerning the topic of paint removal every effort was made to remove as little as possible, as you can see from the before pics the paint was right royally f**ked anyway so it really was a case of a one off restore. I have read some US threads on paint removal using the toughest combo of a cutting pad and a harsh polish, it took 3 passes before their paint thickness guage could even measure an acceptable drop.

We started off with a soft polishing pad (meguairs 8006) and #82 swirl mark remover. This tidied up most of the swirl marks but once they were removed the real problems of random scratches and spiderwebs reared their head!

2 x passes with a cutting pad and #83 couldnt fully remove the spider webs and we were approaching the limits of the pc. We did manage to fully remove the paint defects on one part using the 4 inch sfx pads and #83, however to do this all over would have taken ages and could have potentially removed too much clearcoat. Also the 4 inch backing plate was starting to melt onto the pad:eek:

We decided in the end to remove all the swirls but just fill the spider webs. It took 2 of us 8 hours each as it was anyway! Inc a pub lunch and many tea breaks!

For those interested we ended up using #83 on lake country variable contact light cutting pads, #80 speed glaze to polish and fill and we topped off with #16 paste wax, a heavy durable paste wax.

Use of a polymer sealant wasnt an option as it was raining and Day didnt have any #16 which adds some depth to the paint.

BTW I sold Day a meguirs ultra plush wash mitt so that he wont need to do this again in a hurry!

Day please read the how to care for your clios paintwork thread;)

wouldnt mind doing that 2 my black car

but it sounds bloody complicated and how much does all that sh*t cost!

cant u just take the car into the bodyshop and pay them to polish the whole car with a cutting compound to get rid of swirl marks and small scatches?!

yes you can, they will use a rotary though which is more effective than a pc at this sort of stuff but can induce marks if not used correctly, the pc is the safe home enthusiast choice
