Ph-Quick Rally Car Build

  RB 182 Cup
Well Brean is in February, and that will be the first rally. I hope to be out doing an autotest or autosolo before then though. Oh, and generally the motorclub organises a test day in January. :D Can't wait!

You said you have bought bush kit for front suspension, the only one that needs replacing is the bottom ball jiont with the clio cup race car uniball, all the original bushes are strong enough.
Good luck with your project looks well.

Thanks for the info. Do the Clio cup uniballs fit the standard wishbones and hubs? Looking up the part on renault-sport.com now! ;)

  RB 182 Cup
Yeah, I've PM'd him.

I also looked up the part number for the balljoints that the Gp N Clio rally cars use (7700430763) to see if its just a standard balljoint or if its a stronger one. Just waiting for my mate who works for Renault parts to get back to me.

Was it on tarmac or forest events that killed your standard bbj's?

  RB 182 Cup
Well I've just spoken to R.Sport, and ordered a pair of Group N bottom ball joints. They must be uprated from standard, as the guy there tells me that they weren't replacing them very often on the works built cars. As a bonus they are only £13 each!

I think I'll give these a try, and if I have issues with them failing think about converting over to the Cup race car Uniballs. Found out prices on them too... £77 for the billet joint, £38 for the bearing and a couple of quid for the circlip. The stud looks like its no longer available, but may not fit the road cars hub carrier anyway. All plus VAT too.

  Clio 220 lpg
Yes that sounds the best way to start. must admit I have never tryed them gr n ones. Rough single venues are the worst smooth venues like race curciuts are fine

just read all nine pages :dead: cool to see clio rallying not many about. car looks ace colour and graphics really go well, but if you are keeping your dash i would get it flocked or even just top flocked would really set it off and handy too keep up good work.

  Renault Scenic 182
Great car looks very complete  my current road toy/track abuse car is a silver phase 1 172 on an X so very similar to what you started with, could only dream of going on full on raly spec and to the lengths you have

couple of questions if you dont mind please :D, 1) the renault parts number quoted above for the GRP N bottom ball joints according to my renault parts guy comes up as off a Renault Alpine and as innactive part number so dont know when/if it would come in, i explained its a Renault sport parts number but he seems to think it would work off same system? either way £13.94 each+vat? where did you get yours from? and is it right there an old alpine part?

2) how much did you end up paying for the billies in the end? im after some uprated suspension now as only got apex springs and standard dampers all round and the handling is nothing in comparrison to my old 206 180 :dapprove:

Thankyou for any reply and good luck with the project, i await the in test photos :)

Thanks for the comments guys!

My parts contact said the same thing. When I phoned R.Sport, they said that Renault Sport in France had stock, and I would get them on Tuesday / Wednesday. R.Sport gave me that price, and it also gives a similar price in euros on the Renault Sport parts catalogue. I'm sure you could order them through a normal Renault parts dept, but they might take longer to come through.

2) how much did you end up paying for the billies in the end?

I arranged a group buy (of 2! :clown:)to get them at a discounted price, from Elite Direct. The price from Kam Racing is pretty close to the price we paid. http://www.kamracing.co.uk/manufact...pss-coilover-kit-renault-clio-mk2-rs-273.html

Cheers.

Past the MOT now so thought I'd drag it out into the sunlight, wash it and take a few pics. I noticed when transfering my posts here onto the blog that there aren't many exterior pics.

Oh, and today, my Grp N ball joints turned up earlier than expected. :D

Pics of the ball joints mate?

Loks good all clean and in the day light, reckon it needs some different wheels tho. They look a little boring but i know its not about looks.

Did you get my pm about batteries?

  172 Race Car
Cheap tho, wish you had posted about them a day earlier, i just bought some at twice the price :dapprove:

As i said that part number comes up on the Renault parts system as being off a Renault alpine, quite makes sense if you think about it as they were quite a high spec car so maybe are a cheap easy upgrade? :S

what is R.sport? i was thinking off it as an abreviation of Renault Sport but thinking otherwise now?

On topic it does look damn nice  i sooo want do a set of the sill stands, i bet there sooo handy :approve:

it's possible that it shows as an Alpine part because the Renault Sport competition department is in the Alpine factory in Dieppe, it might just be the way that the system differentiates between production and competition parts. Or it could be off an Alpine...

R.Sport was Radbourne Racing, and as far as I know is the UK distributor for Renault Sport.

Lots of work, but just a small update...

Decided a few weeks ago that I'd fit a paddle clutch before I start competing. Fells like a real backward step to be pulling the engine out after initially repairing the engine in situ, but hindsite is a wonderful thing!

Anyway, started bright and early yesterday and by lunch time the engine was on the floor.

DSCF1329.jpg

DSCF1330.jpg

I then spent the rest of the day cleaning up the engine bay, and the engine ready to go back in. Unfortunately the paddle clutch didn't turn up, so it's all in bits again. :(

There was a bit of bronze swarf in the N'S drive shaft boot, so to be on the safe side (and because I've come this far) we are going to open the box up, and check and replace any worn syncros or selectors. I've also put my name down as a possible for the current slippy diff group buy.

I've nearly had the car a year now, and I'd thought th car would be finished by now, so I'm making a concerted effort to get myself in the workshop and get it finished before the year is out.

No probs, pop down whenever. Have you had your op yet? Saw it mentioned in your project thread.

Unfortunately I won't be doing Brean now... There are all sorts of politics with the organisationof the event, and ALOT of people will be boycotting the rally, myself included. It's a real shame, as I love the event, but morals have to come ahead of fun. :(

However, I will be doing an event 2 weeks before at Smeathearpe organised by South Hams Motorclub, and then Caerwent in March. Can't wait! :D

Another day spent on the car today, and I've vowed to take more photos to liven the thread up!

Firstly a bit of an update... The box was stripped by one of the guys in the workshop (20+ years of Renault experience, and I'm pretty sure he can strip and rebuild a JB or JC box down in his sleep! ;)

Anyway, we found some wear in the box, but nothing like it should at 76k miles. There were paint marks on some of the gears in the cluster, so we think that it's a service exchange box and definately no wear to worry about. How many events it lasts remains to be seen, as these boxes aren't the strongest! :S In an effort to keep the diff where Renault intended, I got another of the techs to weld up the gap in the circlip. Fingers crossed! I intend to do 4 or 5 rallies next year, and hopefully the box will cope. Meanwhile I plan on getting a 172 Cup box and rebuilding it with all new parts and a slippy diff, ready for 2011.

So, my Helix paddle clutch turned up after a 3 week wait. :( I bolted on the flywheel during the week, so that this morning my first job was to bolt the gearbox back onto the engine. With the engine on the crane (about 3 inches off the ground) I was wriggling the box onto the block when disaster struck. the webbing strap slipped on its knot and the engine made the short journey to the floor. Unfortunately this has put a crack in the sump, so I now need to replace it. On the bright side, it provides me with a good excuse to replace the big end bolts with ARP's.

I decided to plough on, and get the lump back in the hole!

Lump:

I'd already slotted my 182 Manifold into place, and replaced the standard engine mounts with the K-tec Grp N ones bought int the group buy.

DSCF1373.jpg

I managed to drop it in without further drama.

DSCF1375.jpg

It was then just a case of sorting out all the spaghetti like hoses and looms, and run them round the bay in the right place and connecting everything back up. Also fitted was a new ali rad.

DSCF1377.jpg

DSCF1378.jpg

DSCF1379.jpg

And all done:

DSCF1380.jpg

Next time I'll be fitting a new sump, APR bolts filling the box, engine and cooling system with the required fluids. In the mean time I have to organise getting an MSA scrutineer round to log book the car. This is where the cars safety items are checked over and the car is deemed fit to rally.

Top stuff.

My Gearbox man can put any final drive ratio you want in the box. Were running a Cup ratio in ours but may change later

  RB 182 Cup
Yeah, I looked down the back of the sofa, and only found 20p and an old wine gum. The sequential box may have to wait! ;)

Just spent the last hour of my life reading this whole thread(im a slow reader haha), and i have to say hour well spent its brilliant felleh, done a real good job, need to get racing! i would love to do a project like this myself but a lack of funds and knowlege is pissing all over my chips haha.
Keep it up mate,
Joe

  RB 182 Cup
Thanks for the positive comments. :)

Just collected a new sump from Danlp6. Cheers mate! My sump gasket turned up from Renault today too, and I also ordered the ARP rod bolts from K-Tec, so they should be with me Friday.

Should be running again in no time. :D

  RB 182 Cup
Time for another update...

Mr Burp wanted my old shockers to keep his old project 172 rolling, so I had to bring my Bilstein fitting forward. It has let me sell the apex springs though, so I've managed to release some funds. Good job too as I have been spending! ;)

Anyway, just the rears fitted at the moment:

DSCF1420.jpg

Don't worry though, they'll be coming off again when I paint the arches and rear beam

My ARP bolts turned up from K-tec last Saturday. Top service again.

DSCF1400.jpg

Been busy at work, so not had time to do anything with them until today. Removing the sump with the engine inplace was fine. Sideways Danny was right! However, top tip if you have searched for sump removal and found this thread / post: Don't jack from the bell housing, but from the A/C compressor mounting point. Much easier! Took just over an hour to do this lot...

Whipped the sump off:

DSCF1419.jpg

And the crack :(

DSCF1418.jpg

Fitted the ARP bolts as per the supplied info, and bolted the new clean sump on with fresh gasket. Filled with oil, and tried to start it.

Unfortunately it spins over fine, but doesn't even try to fire. Whilst the engine was out I took the opertunity to replace the TDC sensor with the new blue version, and I think the wires on the modified loom are the wrong way round. I found the guide on here, but 2 of the colours didn't match. I've soldered yellow to yellow, and the 2 other colours together but this must be wrong. :(

Last time I worked on the car, I noticed that the Powerflow exhaust mid section (that was on the car when I bought it) had a very restrictive bend up over the rear beam:

DSCF1422.jpg

Difficult to tell in this shoddy photo, but it's only just over an inch diameter, so must be robbing me of some power. Anyway it looked cobbled together, and was blowing, so rather than fit my newly aquired 182 decat to a reducer, I bought a new centre section. The back box was fine, so is staying for now.

DSCF1423.jpg

We deal with Mongoose alot with work (for the Focus ST's) so I called them up, and they did me a storming deal on the centre section on it's own and got it too me in double quick time. :D If any one is interested, the quality is top notch and I can get the full 172 exhaust with a sizeable discount. PM me for details.

I've also booked the cars logbook now. The scrutineer may be out tomorrow to do it, or if not Wednesday next week. Looks like I am going in early tomorrow to sort out the TDC wires!
