ph1 172 cup

picked this old girl up yesterday and once i can get it in the garage (currently full with 3/4 of a 172 cup) she'll not be looking like that again

mot failure- emissions

1st port of call will be getting rid of those hidious panthors and sticking my anthracite 172s on

then address the emissions issue,il run live data on it see of i can spot anything put the ordinary if not lambda and possibly swat the cat from the cup if the ph1 twin if fooobard

looks and feels much better on the 16"s

dispite being standard minus a shite induction kit it moves pretty well for a old girl

i am now pondering over the idea of transplanting the entire front end (minus cosmetics) subframe etc from my 172 cup and rear suspension too so essentially a ph1 cup

Nice looking Ph1 now its on 172 alloys, looks like it needs some spacers though.

Change over to the 172cup front end, might as well if its in good condition and you have it all.

its pretty decent condition tbh i was planning on donating it to my ph2 but when the idea of a one off ph1 cup came to mind it certainly tickled my pickle

i have a set of turinis i could swap over aswell im just missing the cup spoiler but thats not a huge issue

hopefuly thats a decent match for the lil marks on both them 172s and turinis

im debating changing front arms front n rear spring/dampers and turinis but not subframe

realistically what am i going to achieve by swapping frames? i believe the arms sit slightly further forward but that seems inconclusive

lets take this back to basics for a minute the cup wasnt ever a hot version it was a budget version so why redesign a subframe ? or just alter the outer bolt on the bottom arm tilting the arm slightly further forward

i think iv over complicated this

cup subframe has the holes for the wishbones drilled further out, So making the track 10mm wider (5mm each side iirc) And the cup wishbones have more castor. Hope that helps

20mm is going to be a noticable difference,but alot more work involved

for the short term il hang onto the subframe transplant the arms and shocks and possinky turinis then take it from there

not alot of progress made so far to be honest just sourcing bits n pieces while i get the garage emptied,speaking of which iv got a few ph2 items to go on
door sill strip rear lights and the alacantra rear door cards/boot trim etc (im not 100% on installing this yet tho i may be stripping it i havnt decided)

also considering supercharhing instead-never drove a supercharged car before and iv always found the concept very appealing over turbocharging

17 tasks on my to do list before i think any further on boosting -mainly ph2 bits or cup bits swapped over/replaced

im fibbing actually got a full set of new engine mounts (some powerflex) with my cup as spares so theres another job

havnt realy done anything to.the ph1 yet but have managed to get most of what i need from the cup off and other bits read to.go on

ph2 interior minus the dash and seats ( i like the ph1 seats and they are in dcent condition)
ph2 cat and catback
ph2 gear selector (i hate the halford special metal ball)
ph2 door sill strips
ph2 rear lights
ph2 parcel shelf and boot liber etc

aliminium bonnet
aircon delete


thatll keep me busy for a while

another ph2 mod-il be having a bash at carbon wrapping the dor strips once the wrap.arrivesnot sure what to.do.with the bullets they are currently chrome but look a bit tattygoing to.try and get the engine and box out the.cup over the next couple of days while iv give myself a bit paternity leave-easier said than done when shes due in days but needs must once iv got the garage free il actually be able.tp.get started on the ph1

the ashtray wrapped and also the ph2 gear insert ready for when i whip the ph1 metal nob out,il wrap a few more bits not sure what yet dont want it to look ott

iv wrapped a fair few bits out of the cups interior just fr practice really doubt il put most of them to use in my ph2


hoping il get this cup completely stripped and free up some space to work in the garage

getting to this stage was easy,the subframe bolts took 3 hours to get out

all in all the cup in practically apart,

just bought a cup pack spoiler so iv now got all the ingredients to make a ph1 cup

just need to sell or move the cup engine scrap the shell and start dismantling the ph1,i cant start amything major outside the garage with a wife about to give birth once things have settled down il get cracked,on the plus side gave plenty thinking time on what i want to do with it

engine mods iv settled on no forced induction and going for

catcams-seems logical the belts will be getting done at the same time
decat (ph2)

i think that should keep me busy for a while if not im sure the family will lol

i was going to swap the cups rear axle but from what i can gather the cups stub axles are thinner ao the axles width will be shorter which is the exact opposite of what im trying to achieve

thanks,we 5 days overdue now so other than interior jobs progress will be halted soon

also going to add the 182 manifold and decat-better mid range

One of the best things I did to mine was change the final drive from 3.89 to 4.07. If you can get hold of a good 172 cup gearbox its really worth doing whilst everything else is out.

As is a Quaife diff but that's at least £1200 including a rebuild.

hopefully yeah,i was expecting her waters breaking xmas day with all the hassle visiting differemt family members etc

just ordered a 182 mani n decat

iv discovered my spare cup lump has rs stamped inlets so might be worth using them instead of having the ph1s matched depending how good of a match my ph1 top is to the rs lower

injectors are 40k younger too

part wise now i need a pms ac delete kit, a catback to match up to the decat

pretty much set for the project now other than a time to get stuck in but patience is a virtue apparantly

my daughters still being stuborn if id know she was going to be a week late id of set about a task lol

i quite liked how tall the gearing felt on the ph1

to be honest id considered the swap but opted to keep ph1 box in for the above-now you got me pondering lol

rethink on the zaust

the link pipe from ktec is 120 shipped,id need the cat link to for mot so double it

i also need a decent catback (my custom is a no go on this its only silencer is in the centre section which the link would remove)

im now thinking go custom from the mani back and have my spare ph2 cat adapted at the same time to slot in for mot time

opinons please folks

found a modded 172 centre section/182 decat

so that should slot on the ebay back box or even the standard back box i have as a temp measure until i get the rest sorted

if nothing else i can now create a working system to get it to powerflow etc at some point

a custom set up will more than likely be the end result so any recomendations in the north east

right now baby settled i can think about getting to work soon,they do sleep alot lol

finalised the mods andneverything is onroute bar the cams which are beyond my diy skills

inlets matched to throttle body and gasket on tother end
catcams fitted and mapped to by suit rstunning dtm etc when belts are done

im hoping to hit 185ish bhp before cams but its midrange poke is alot more what im looking for

Finally got the cup completely stripped and the shell out the garage

1st i need to do a bit cleaning since he gearbox oil pi55ed itself

work shall commence on saturday get it on axle stands and set about removing a few bits

quite excited now im actually able to get on witb it

Lets hope the subframe comes off easier than the cup donor-il leave it overnight with a bit spray oil before i attempt it
