Ph1 172 Track Car. Next Year I Go Racing - Hopefully!

A few new parts that will be going on this week;-

Clio 182 manifold

Electric steering column for EPAS conversion

Steering rack from a Dci I confirmed that it is exactly the same turns lock to lock as the 172 rack.

Pure motor sport rear beam strengthening kit. Got this half price from Nick at PMS as apparently they are seconds but look fine to me.
No problem if they do need the fine adjustment tool anyway.

While the engine was out for other things it would be silly not to change the cambelt as well.

I have a set of genuine Renault timing tools that I bought a little while ago from Stone automotive. As I'm sure most of you know they are essential for accurately timing these engines.

New genuine cambelt belt kit from Renault Wolverhampton

As suspected the timing was out, I forgot to take any pics of the cam slots to show this though.
I think there must be a lot of improperly timed F4R engines out there.

Rocker cover removed for painting and to fix a small oil leak

Also new cam seals and cams caps. No pic of cam caps for some reason though

Not a particularly exiting update but a good job done.

Lots more updates to come soon.

Thanks sonny, it was an important job that needed doing.

I have been cracking on with cleaning and painting various engine parts.

Also doing the EPAS conversion and rear beam strengthening.

More pics to follow soon.

Good going, looking great. Nice tool press.

Had the dash out to remove all the sound deadening from behind it. Also to run the wiring for my oil temp and pressure gauges, the epas conversion, and to make installing the new steering column a bit easier.

Cheers for that Mini182, I have a Ktec stealth system with a modified BTBcat atm so a link pipe would most definitely be needed.

Subframe had a coat of satin black while it was out. Also new dci steering rack fitted.

A few other engine bits painted silver enamel.

What setups are people using to record their laps at trackdays etc?

I have been to lots of trackdays and always fancied the idea of recording it, but never have.

Would be nice to have some sort of telemetry as well.

Bit of an update.

Engine and gearbox have now been painted and put back together.

Aircon and PAS delete with Cup alternator setup

Also fitted a sandwich plate ready for my oil temp and pressure gauges

Decided to give the inside a bit of a refresh while the cage was out.

White interiors get messy quite quickly, a few coats of paint can make all the difference.

Even got the wife to help out a bit!

I have used a trailer in the past to tow the car around, but I was recently made aware of the law regarding towing. As I passed in 1999 I was just a little to late to have the B+E entitlement on my licence.

So today I passed my trailer test first time! So I can now legally tow the car around to track days etc.

Car is all back together now ready for a few trackdays.

Really happy with the upgrades we have done to it especially the EPAS conversion which works a treat, and the PMS rear beam combined with the powerflex black series rear bushes tightens up the rear end a treat.

A few pics of it finished and ready to go.

Now that is a tempting offer, thanks Tony.

I would really like to do a race at Donington...... Very busy at the moment though so not sure I could be ready in time.

I would need to do my ARDS test, fit a Fire extinguisher system, and get a race suit, gloves, boots etc.

Get that thing in the Tricolore Trophy, I can waive your registration fee for the 1st race ;).

Had a good day at Curborough yesterday, was using it as a bit of a shakedown really.

Car performed really well, the only issue was half way through the day the new electric steering started playing up.

We checked the voltage with the car running and noticed it was dipping down to 11v when using the steering, even lower if we were turned it from lock to lock quickly.

Turns out the alternator is goosed, it is working just not outputting anywhere near what it should. Time for a new one I think!

Ok guys hopefully enough people in the know are following my thread and can give me some advice.

If and that's a big IF I can get it together to race this year I need to do a few things, I think these are;-

1. Do my ARDS and get a race licence. Can anyone recommend somewhere in the midlands for this?

2. Get some race clothing, boots, gloves, and a suit (Alreday have a helmet). Can people tell me what spec this needs to be and if there is any cheap suppliers. Not really bothered about looking the part as long as they are safe.

3. Install a fire extinguisher system. Would this be suitable? - Fire Extinguisher

I would really like to do Donington on the 8th June, just not sure it is do able with my time/financial constraints.

Tony I have PM'd you regarding registration.

Awesome stuff mate.
1. I did my ards at Silverstone simply because they offered extra training and some interesting stuff to do on top of the test itself. Skid pan, caterhams etc all for a similar price to other places wanted for the standard test. The test itself 'should' be fairly standard with a classroom part and obviously the driving part of it. Forst step is to get your 'go motorsport/racing' pack from demon tweeks and the like has all the info on ards, licence application, msa blue book etc.

2. Have a look on the TARC forum, we have a sponsor 'Happy Racer' that do all the clothing/helmets if you want to have a look at them.

3. As long as its MSA it'll be fine 2.25L is the minimum capacity but make sure to fit it correctly as thats part of the msa compliance, one nozzle in the engine bay and one in the passenger compartment as a minimum.
