Ph1 172 Track Toy

Car  Clio 182 track car
Decided I wanted to do a few track days this in something cheap that I could have fun in without about expensive running costs and repairs etc, so started the hunt for a cheap 182. After a few weeks of looking I couldn't find anything local for the right price, then a ph1 172 came up on gumtree literally 2 miles from my house, not what I wanted but was local and dirt cheap so snapped it up. It has a few issues and been stood for a few months so this will be a bit of a resto and track prep build, anyway here she is, totally standard other than a cheap air filter....

After a good day cleaning it came up ok, but still needs a good machine polish...

After a good clean the first job was to sort the air filter out. This is how it came ...

The hose was split and yes that's a max power filter!

I like the k-text style induction kit so decided to replicate with a diy custom setup, this is what I came up with. Black silicon induction hose with ramair foam filter...

Really pleased with the result, fits just right and sounds great too.

Next job was the rear lights, it came with some god awfull Lexus things....

So decided to go with a set of ph2 units....

Looks really good. I was going to look at it but found another one instead. You've improved it so much with (just?)a wash and those rear lights!

Cheers, long way to go yet but only had it 2 weeks! Ha.

Managed to source a set of 16" oz wheels as not a fan of the black f1 wheels. Plan is to refurb them silver and use for the track.

In the meantime I gave the 16's a good clean up...

Went to fit them but the car hasn't come with the locking wheel nut! ... Any ideas anyone!?

Also fitted a din blanking panel that will house a few switches in the future plus replaced the faulty standard clock display with an LED volt meter to keep an eye on the battery charge...

Looks great. Anything wrong with it mechanically if it was so cheap? The bodywork looks ok.

Yeah body work is pretty tidy after a good clean, it had been sat for months when I bought it. Bonnet needs a lick of paint but other than that for her ages it's quite tidy.

Mechanically well just from driving it I know it needs brakes all round, has a knock when setting off ( suspect gearbox or engine mounting ) needs track rod ends and probably lower arm bushes doing and the speedo doesn't work, oh and the fuel pipe where it meets the injector rail has a slight leak. It's going in for all that lot going shortly so fingers crossed not much more!

Agreed!
My drive is slightly off camber so looks worse than it is. I wanted to go coilover route but might just end up on springs for now to keep the costs under control.

Another slightly bigger parcel arrived today...

Another parcel arrived, new rear mintex pads & discs with bearings....

Also the car came with no ashtray, so decided to make a template for a gauge pod and trail fit a 52mm air fuel ratio gauge I had lying around in the garage from a previous project...

Not the finished version but quite happy with how it looks.

Also managed to get the new omp wheel fitted.

Before, the old wheel had seen better days...

Getting there slowly but surely!

£180 each for a bolt and go, not bad! Looks decent as well tbh. Let us know how high/low it sits when you've fitted them.

The car came with a horrible cheap aftermarket gear knob fitted. Plus the gaitor clips had snapped so managed to source a full OE replacement item....

Set of Clio cup shockers with lowering springs purchased which should help the looks and handling for now, ultimate plan will be coilovers....

Awesome. Love the ph1 gearstick. And those cup shocks will be a good fit. Let me know when you get rid for coil overs. ;)

Finally got round to fitting the switches to the din panel. I've gone for a push button start, fuel pump switch and an aux switch plus x2 LEDs one if witch I hope to use as a shift light....

Standard panel...

Well ended up buying a clio cup today so this ph1 is now for sale if anyone is interested?

I'd be looking for offers around £800 for the car as she stands today I.e standard car.

Most of the bits will be finding there way on to the other car apart from the cup suspension and rear brakes maybe the steering wheel so might be willing to do a deal including those.
